Default 70' Chevelle largest rear tire/wheel combo ????

What have people seen or done on a 70-72 Chevelle in the rear for the widest wheel and tire combo. Trying to find out to set my car up on a set of rear 20's. I am thinking of purchasing a 66-67 rear 12bolt ( still need a axle) and thinking with this older body axle being about 5/8"s narrower might help me or am I on the wrong direction? I had a guy stat to me he was running a 11" wide wheel, you guys see it happening?

I am not looking at going as far of mini tubing.

Any thoughts or help with info would be great.
Thanks

Default Gsxmax

I am running 20" x 10" with 315-35 on the rear of a 1970 Buick grand sport. I had to roll the inner fender lip and run a watts link to keep the rear from moving around. Also modified wheel tubes for some extra clearance but frame rail are not narrowed and tubbed. It's a tight fit but doable. You should be able to run 295/305-20 with no mods. what ever you can find. Also I am running 245-40-19 front.

Thanks guys....you guys think that a extra 5/8"s shorter axle on either side like the 66-67 axles are will help?

Nope, that's just backspacing. I wouldn't stuff the hugest tire in there if you plan to actually drive the car to the limit.

305/35/18 here fits fine and rolled lips for the extra clearance.
