Default UMI Performance's "Shop Rag" 1965 Cutlass

Hey Lateral-G! Here's a car we've been building the last year and just debuted - figured you'd like to see the build up!

Last summer we picked up this 1965 Oldsmobile Cutlass. The car was in great, unrestored shape but was showing it's age here and there. We wanted a car that was affordable and something we could easily hop in and put a ton of miles on. Being that this isn't a Chevelle, the price tag was lower but since it's still an A-body, all our suspension would bolt right up to it.

The car was originally purchased in Pittsburgh, and we appreciated it stayed in our home state of Pennsylvania it's entire life. We could tell the roof had been repainted but the rest retained it's original paint, along with the drivetrain and interior. Under the hood was the "Ultra High Compression" numbers-matching 330 engine.

We had a blast driving it all over last summer and doing some testing on the car. Over the winter we got the itch to take it on Hot Rod Power Tour and just had to scratch. We knew the car would need some love in order to make the long haul, but we didn't want to lose the originality and cool factor of the car either. On top fop of that, we didn't want to break the bank either.

After some brainstorming, we knew that this car would get our new Power Tour Package suspension kit. This kit is all new tubular control arms up front, tubular trailing arms in the rear, shocks, springs, and sway bars front and rear. The engine would need to be freshened up, a new transmission with overdrive and a much more comfy interior were in order.

The first step was to yank out the original 330 engine. While it was still running and driving, after 74,000 miles on the clock we figured that it was time to be freshened up so it would easily last another 100,000 miles. We sent the engine out to Redline Performance and Machine. They rebuilt the engine to factory specs but added a slightly bigger cam(.481/224@050) to help the engine breath and better utilize the new Edelbrock Performer intake and Edelbrock carburetor. A set of American Racing headers expels the fumes through a complete Flowmaster exhaust system. Under the hood we also utilized a Wizard cooling radiator and a complete CVF serpentine accessory drive.

In order to achieve better MPG and lower RPM's, we reached out to Bowler transmission who set us up with a new 4L60E. The horsepower then gets sent back to the stock rearend that was rebuilt with an Auburn posi unit and 3.55 gearing.

On the interior, we needed some updating as well. We installed a RetroSound stereo to update to modern Bluetooth tunes while still looking stock. In order to make sitting in this car for thousands of miles more comfortable, we installed a set of TMI Products Pro-Series seats.

These seats are a complete bolt-in seat that have increased bolsters and recline. Lastly, we installed a complete Restomod Air system to keep the temps cool. With Restomod Air we were able to pick out awesome machined vents and a controller to match the feel of the car perfectly.

Lastly we picked up a set of Baer 6P brakes to get this car to stop on a dime and wrapped those in 18" Detroit Steel wheels. The wheels we powder coated white to match the roof and it really set off the car with a stock yet updated look.

With the car complete, it was time to hit the road! We drove down to Concord, NC for the start of the 2019 Hot Rod Power Tour. Over the following seven days, we hit seven different cities and ended up in Norwalk, OH. All told we racked up almost 2,000 miles in the first trek with this car! The very next weekend the car went down to the GM Carlisle Nationals. We have plans to put as many miles on this car as we can to show that our suspension can handle thousands of miles on the street, just like it does on the track!
