Default Give up on my 69 and Buy a 996 Turbo?

Considering giving up on my 69 and going for the immediate gratification of Porsche 996 Turbo. I have a lot of parts bought for my 69 but I am long way from completion (paint & body, reassembly, etc). With two small kids I don’t have a lot of free time on my hands. So I am considering selling everything and buying a 996 Turbo.

It is my understanding that the 996 Turbo don’t have the same problems as the standard 996, particularly the motor issues. From what I have seen you can get them to near 600HP with better wastegates, intercoolers, full exhaust and tune. Then more with upgraded turbos.

Am I crazy? I know I may kick myself in the future as the 69 was the first car I bought with my own money when I was 16. But I also know I have a lot more money to spend to complete it, time I don’t have, and eventually the 996 Turbos are going to start appreciating like all the others.

You're not crazy. Turbo 911s are turn key and amazing machines. I was looking at 997/991s but decided against it. I'm locked into mine bc the amount of time I have into it. Also more importantly my kids said I can't sell it lol.

Do you need to sell the 69 to get the Porsche ? Maybe pack the Camaro away somewhere until you get the urge for the Camaro again.

I’d want the Porsche at this point in my life as well. I like simple and lower maintenance in machines. It’s going to be more
Trouble and money than you are anticipating to build the 69. Way more....

What about something a little less money so you can keep the camaro? Newer camaro, mustang or vette.

Vendors will murder me — but the Porsche is fun as hell...... but NOTHING at all like the smiles I have driving my ‘40. Having said that — the Porsche (911 Turbo S drop top) is about 1/2 the cost. LOL

You're not crazy... it's a tough call and very much a life decision. I daily drove a 996 Turbo for 2 years and 30k miles.... was a great 2 years! I was single and no kids then so that was a big part of it.

You are correct - very minimal mods to get to 600 hp and keep it relatively docile.... I went to 700.... Alpha 28 turbos and meth injection.

It's a tough call. They're such great cars and the 996 TT is a great value.

This is good advice....

And so is Todd’s — re: Buying something a little less than the 911....

I'm in the same spot and even posted a similar thread here: https://lateral-g.net/forums/showthread.php?t=56459

I thought everyone had solid advice then and responses.

I'm still in the same spot all this time later. I'm just going to slowly work on the TA. I've bought a 00 540i that's modded with everything I want to serve as the fun car while I slowly work on the TA. Maybe you could do something similar? I have another thread concerning great driving cars for under $20k. There were good suggestions given in that thread too.

Good luck whatever you do.

What's that line Payton always uses? If you're gonna be a bear... be a grizzly.
