Okay - but still the same -- if the noise goes away when you disconnect the pcv hose.... then the noise you're hearing is the engine trying to suck air in "somewhere" wherever it can get it from!

A pcv is nothing more than a "controlled vacuum leak" --- It's VACUUM --- but has to have a corresponding air intake somewhere.... or it's just going to create vacuum until it pulls thru somewhere. Thus the whistling.

I don't know where on an LS engine the breather side of that PCV is or I'd tell ya where to look.

Maybe a quickie google search or some one that's familiar with this engines will chime in.

I thank you for your reply! I have got a lot of info but nothing that is exactly like my set up. The carbon fiber valve covers only have the nipple for the PCV on one side (passengers) the other side just has the cap for oil. I'll try to search more. Thanks again.

I was going to do it the stock way, with the catch can plumbed to the plate under the intake and the outlet to the throttle body (vacuum), and the nipple on the valve cover either running to the air inlet tube or possibly a small K&N filter for filtered fresh air to make the system work correctly.

Jody -- Where's the breather on these motors??

Seems to me - just like in an old skool motor - that there needs to be somewhere for filtered fresh air to enter the crankcase (old skool would be the valve cover the opposite side of the PCV).

I get that the LS motors don't run that old skool breather in the V/C but there has to be make up air from somewhere???

I'm not sure on all LS, but the majority have the top block plate under the intake with a baffled nipple fitting, and a hose that runs from there to the vacuum port of the throttle body. On the valve cover there is another nipple that runs to the inlet tube between the throttle body and the maf, or directly to the throttle body to a non-vacuum port in front of the throttle blade. That is where the engine pulls the air into the system, and air from there is already filtered by the air filter and metered by the maf, and accounted for. You could also run the tube from the valve cover to the air filter box, or just have a K&N filter on the end of the hose, but now you're putting un-metered air into the system if you still have the maf. Not a big issue though (other than smog legality), but it does change the tune somewhat, and should be re-tuned for it. If it's running speed density (no maf) it's not an issue.

This is why I'm having some challenge. My valley cover does not have the nipple for the metered air.(99% sure ,at work right now). Is there another approach?
I just looked at a pic of my motor and the valley cover does not have the nipple. I'm back to asking is there another way to vent it?

yes, either replace the cover with a stock unit that has one (my first choice), drill and tap the cover for a nipple, or put one in the other valve cover ( my last choice with those beautiful covers! ).

You have the oil separator so the fact there's no baffling in the cover should be fine. Wonder where the LQ9 drew the pressure from? I think it had a fitting on the intake itself now that I think about it. I had not got that far with that motor, or I would have fixed it before you got it.

Will a ls6 04-06 valley cover work? Would I have to grind the block?
