Default Need Help - Door Edge Trim / Guards

A 66 Chevelle I picked up a few weeks ago has that stainless trim on the edge of the doors that pinches on to the door edge (they aren't the adhesive kind). Personally, I don't like the way they look at all and am going to take them off, however, it appears to me that it will be difficult to do so without creating scratches or worse.

I have searched and asked some friends for any tips, but haven't really come up with much. I started messing with it today and it's harder to open them up ("un-pinch") them than I had hoped for, while still trying to be careful.

So does anyone have any tips or experience for doing this without tearing up the paint?

Thanks
