Default wheel "tolerances"

Folks,

I am looking for opinions (backed with experience of course) on new wheels.
I have a set of wheels that are not true. I use the term true, due to the fact that I am still gathering the facts on whether the wheel's lack of "true-ness" is lateral or vertical. I was initially told that the wheels were "out by .050" and that the shop would not be able to safely balance the wheel/tire, the wheel being the issue, not the tire.

Backstory...there is a vibration felt in the driveline, that after checking engine and transmission possibilities and rebalancing the driveshaft, etc...was tracked to the rear wheels when the shop could see the problem on the car and that led to the rebalancing efforts on the rear.

Thanks for the assistance.
