Pros and Cons? Anybody had anything done? I'm thinking of having the underbody done to make sure rust won't be a problem years down the road. Will probably apply Line-X afterwards as an undercoating. One guy told me that it doesn't pit the metal as regular media blasting goes. But if I am undercoating it, I guess it really wouldn't matter.

Pros: You can keep all the trim and glass on the car, and the media won't hurt a thing. Less heat build up, which can lead to warpage, and as you mentioned pitting.

Cons: Soda is not as abrasive as other media, so you'll probably still be sanding body filler and scraping other tough stuff that has been applied to the car over the years.

if we are talking about the bottom, i would just sandblast it, soda works great in engine compartments, and on the outside. but on the bottom i think i would want to make sure to get all the crap off before moving on.

not to hy-jack this thread, but what does it cost to have a shell acid dipped? how good of a job does it do?

I don't know about soda on steel, but not good on aluminum. The soda residue if not thoroughly removed set up corrosion in many military aircraft several years back and they quit using it.

I have heard not so good things about dipping. Same as above, if not completely neutralized it has come back and haunted people. There is a company in Arlington, TX though that is dipping with biodegradable (sp?)products and after 15 years have had zero problems. I called on pricing and for my 69 Blazer and was $1300 for the shell, $135 for each major body panel, and you could bring all the small items and they would throw that stuff in. Process takes 2 weeks.

Not to hy-jack this thread, but what does it cost to have a shell acid dipped? how good of a job does it do?

They can strip and e-coat body shells within the measurements of 13.6 feet in length and 48 inches in height. Cost: $2500

The price has really gone up. When I had mine done it was $1800. That was about 3 years ago. Does a superior job then media blasting can. It can get places a media-blaster can't, and the e-coat covers areas that a painter can't get to with his gun.

So far I haven't had a single thing go wrong with my car, so I can't relate to anyone elses bad experiences with it. They must not have had it done in Michigan because the place in Romulus power washes the car with hot water after it's removed from the bath. There's a few cars on PT.com that had their cars Acid-Dipped. Hell....even that silver car that Lillard tools around in took an acid bath a few years back. And at the same place I had mine done. :thumbsup:
