Gettin Dipped

Anyone ever had there car dipped? I was contemplating getting it dipped to get a fresh start on it and knowing exactly what I have to work with. Someone advised me that I shouldn't get it dipped due to the fact that I would never get it totally sealed afterwards.

Anyone have any experience with this?

Any comment would be appreciated.

I believe they neutralize all the agents before you get the car back, but I have no first hand knowledge with it.

I had my car dipped. Its not the first one either.

There is a lot of prep work to do before you take it in. You have to get most of the seam sealer off with easy off oven cleaner or a propane torch. From there you have to be sure all the bolts and such are removed.

When you get it back it will be nice and clean and free of just about everything. You will have to re seal all the seams and put the sound proofing back.

If you dont want to get that involved you can have it media blasted. That will take care of all the paint stuff and rust but leaves most of the sealant.

Depending on where you live it may be possible to get it soda blasted or soda dipped. here in California its getting harder to get anything too caustic done.

Well the place here dips it and then afterwards they seal it for me. But they don't seal it by dipping it.........they spray it. But that's what I'm interested in. Is getting every ounce of rust off of it.......to include what I can't see.

This place didn't mention anything about getting the sealer out of the car. They said just strip it down, get all the wiring out of it, glass out and stuff like that...........and bring them the cab.

So this weekend I was going to yank the suspension out and get everything ready.........

But definitly wanted to get someone's experience on the situation.

LIL QIK, I can give you some insight. My car was dipped and e-coated about 3 years ago. All you have to do is strip the car down to a bare shell. You shouldn't have to scrape seam sealer off or do anything else. I had mine done in Michigan and the process was that they baked the car at 600 degrees to burn off all the sealer, paint, filler, etc. Then the car was submerged for a day in the stripper. Afterwards it was taken to a facility to be e-coated. You just can't get anymore thorough then this. I can't say enough about it. It was WELL worth the money. And my car was a Detroit car. Today it looks like a replacement shell from General Motors SPO. See my website below for some pictures.

That's the thing that bothers me. This place that I'm talking about isn't going to e-coat it..........they're only going to phosphate coat it. And if I remember right........someone had once told me not to dip it if it's not getting e-coated.

Man..........I really like the way the car looked when you got it back from dipping.........that's exactly what I'd like to see in my garage.

I also have though about dipping, but do not know if it is worth it or not. I am also in the Houston area. Who have you talked to , if you don't mind me asking? Maybe there's a better place that I do not know about.

Hey Travis..........the only place I know of in the Houston area is Houston Metal Stipping and they're are actually located out in Conroe. Do you know of anyone different..........I'd be willing to take it as far as 3 maybe 4 hours away.

I had mine sealed after they dipped it. When it came out of the sealer tank it looked ready for paint. Not a run or a sag in site. It was the best thing I did for the project.

Here in California they can't use the bitchen stripper they use in other parts of the country. That is why I did the sealer stripping myself. The cost for the shell,fenders,doors,hood,trunk and a box of odds and ends was 1750.00 including pick up and drop off.

i would not do it unless you can have car e-coated, there is no way in hell they will spray phosphate coating on all areas, especially inside rockers etc, find a e-coating place or media blast away

What's up and how's the car coming.........? Yeah I've spoken to you about this before and the e-coating seems to be the main problem. I can't find anyone that e-coats in this area. I'll keep looking..........I don't mind hauling the car a few hours away.........just can't seem to find anyone that dips and e-coats. Hell, I can't find anyone that just e-coats........lol
