The 2009 Goodguys/Air Ride Technologies Street Machine of the Year Competition heated up in a big way this afternoon here at the Goodguys 12th PPG Nationals in Columbus. A total of 31 vehicles entered this year’s competition which saw the debut of several new cars including the Roadster Shop-built ’62 Corvette of Barry Bloomquist, two cars from Roger Burman’s “Lakeside Rods & Rides” shop (’67 Camaro and ’65 Mustang), a new ’69 Camaro for Nathan Powell built by Alan Johnson, a radical ’71 Jaguar XKE from Posies, Devan Glissmeyer’s ’68 Mustang built by Kindig Design and many others. Tomorrow the cars will be displayed in the “Builder’s Choice” arena from 8am to 2pm followed by the announcement of the top 5 award finalists. The winner of the 2009 Goodguys/Air Ride Technologies Street Machine of the Year will be announced here tomorrow evening at the awards reception which begins at 5:30pm inside the Celeste Building.

The showman of today’s autocross was Roger Burman when he launched the ’67 Camaro with a vigorous burnout then spun the car completely on one of the corners doing a full throttle tire smoking donut. The crowds went wild!

The fastest lap of the day was logged by Bloomquist’s ’62 Corvette which posted a 32.222 with Phil Gerber of the Roadster Shop doing the driving. Gerber and Detroit Speed’s Kyle Tucker were locked in battle to see who could post top time. Tucker was driving a fresh ’69 Camaro for customer Jason Stanola. Didn't Bob Johnson have a 69 camaro that was built by Alan Johnson in the running? I saw him complete at least one lap of the autocross. **edit** Bob was just wheeling it around I guess....

Steve Rupp was there with Penny, says he finished around 6th place, right behind the Roadster shop entry. I think he said he turned a 31.6 DSE turned a low 30.

Hey, This is Steve using John's computer... :)

Penny ran in the Vendors class.. I have to work and didn't have the time to do the SMOTY deal (and I wouldn't have won the award)

My best time on new KDWs was 31.6 so I'm happy that I would of had the fastest time of that group.

Kyle Tucker of DSE had the fastest time in the Vendors Group...

This one reminds me of the Charger in the chase scene in Bullitt.

The trend I see with the SMOTY finalists is less sidewall than last years cars.

The Vette was absolutely awesome, nothing else in the field even on the same level I felt. Lots of very nice cars. If Ringbrothers had made it with the Fairlane, it wouild have been a tough decision to make.

and Rodger from Ironworks won Truck of the Year Finalist!

I just got back from the 10hr drive. Ill wait for Rodger or the "Eric's" to get back to give a little more detail. But theres a story as to how Rodger found out. All I can say is Rodger had one hell of a grin when they told him as we all stood there dumbfounded as to what the heck is going on.
It was great finally meeting Rodger and his lovely wife, Eric and the Ironworks car project clan.

I added a few of my own

1. Baddest sounding street machine- Nathan Powells camaro
2. Best autox donuts- Roger Burman driving Dave's camaro
3. Loudest car IMO- Bruce Harveys 32 ford under the covered pavilion
4. Best church service interuption- Firing up the car and having to move it
while the church service waited patiently because somebody forgot to
move the car earlier to bring car to winners circle-The KindigIt crew
owner Dave with the white 68 Mustang. Sorry guys I just had to let that
one out of the bag. You guys were a blast to hang out with. No more
mojitos for you. Stop lurking and become a member!
5. Best speaker-The only person you could hear speaking about his build/car
at the awards. Dave from KindigIt Designs, 68 mustang
5. Best lemonade stand? Inside joke with ironworks
6. Best auto "Kareoke" at the mic. Jimi Day of Optima
7. Biggest grin after finding out they won- Rodger from Ironworks
8. Best verbal sparring between 2 individuals (always in a good way... so
far) Kenny Davis/Rodger Lee. All that metal hasnt changed you a bit. Good
to see ya back to normal KENNY! BTW you still owe me the beer.

I'll also let Rodger tell the story as I was there when he got word. You could tell he was proud! As well he should be. I know you guys have seen this truck on the web and in print, but it doesn't do it justice. Very well thought out and executed. The whole Ironworks crew, Rodger, his wife, Eric and customers are a class act. Great Job! I took hundreds of pictures over the weekend, I'll try to start getting them up this week.

I wanna know what internals was in Powell's BBC and what exhaust. That thing sounded totally wicked. I was told it was a 540 and saw it had Dart heads on it, but that is about it.

Ditto. I need to know as well.

BTW, the word flying around the Pro's pick area was that the car actually belongs to Bob Johnson. He just didn't want his name on it for the judging for some reason. This is purely rumor so take it for what it is worth. Bob drove it in the autocross as well as through the awards parade. Anyway the things you hear when competition is involved.

I posted over at Musclerides about the engine and the rumor. I'll see if Bob replies. I could care less who it belonged to, I just want to know about the engine and exhaust. WOW. I just thought it was funny how the comments start flying when judging is going on!

Doug Cooper responded. This is what was written:

The camaro has the same exact engine that's in my 55 it's a dart 540 makes 700hp on pump gas... aluminum heads, dual plane intake and a 900cfm holley... the exhaust on the cars is different than my 55 Alan used a cup car exhaust and cut it all up to fit the camaro it's also got a tilton ceramic clutch set up [5g's] those pieces are what makes it sound so BAD A$$... and a heavy foot doesn't hurt.

I have asked for some cam specs as well. Here is the thread link:
