Lookin good! Who did you purchase your rocker parts from?

Looks like fun I'm glad I don't have as much metal to change as you do. I would also get some bracing in there to keep it from moving.

That's funny right there! Only because... the only reason these cars take so much "time" is because people don't actually WORK ON THEM... they're real easy to take apart... But it takes some real effort to get out there and start putting them back together.

Two things that hold my buddies up from building their "dream cars" or getting them done in a reasonable amount of time (months not years)...

Budget: to buy the required parts

Effort: if they have the parts - to get them installed

CamaroAJ obviously has the budget to go get the parts he needs, and he has the drive/willingness to put in the effort to get the job moving... 'cause they don't build themselves at night while you're sleeping! :woot:

so far i have spent $17,885 on: i hope i don't get flamed for talking about money:lol:

speedtech sub frame
2001 camaro SS doner
1969 camaro
full floor, firewall, 2 rockers, trunk floor, frame rails
DSE sub frame connectors, mini tubs
misc. stuff

i am still under budget, i am going to try and keep this under 30k but i think 35k is more realistic.

i have been selling all the stuff off the two cars i don't want/need and i have some stuff from other things i've done that needs sold. between the vette i sold and the other things laying around that i sold i haven't really put any money into the car yet.

That dash is super cool!!

How close it was? What kind of brackets and how did you install it?

That dash is super cool!!

How close it was? What kind of brackets and how did you install it?

its dead on. i had to make 7 brackets. i went to lowes and got some 1/4 - 20 all thread nuts and 1/2 long 1/4 - 20 bolts and bolted them to the dash. then i got 1/4 cold rolled rod and cut them to the length i needed, on on each side of the threaded nut and one on the bottom to make a triangle.

for the two lower side mounts i used two more of the all thread nuts and a piece of 1/2" tube and welded the nuts inside the tube. the tube then was cut to length and welded to the "A" pillers where the stock dash was welded to the piller.

the lower center mount i used the stock mount and made a stand to bring it up 2" to hold the dash up in the right spot.

i'll post up better pictures tonight, working on installing the frame rails now before i cut off the back of the car that way i have a referance point to where the stock frame rails went and everything lines up right when i go to install the new rear sheet metal.

CamaroAJ

since i'm waiting on the sheet metal for the rear of the car i figured i would go ahead and replace the frame rails while i still have a referance point from the factory frame rails

The test fit looks good. How do you like the new fenders?

CamaroAJ
05-02-2010, 06:17 PM
they are super light. they do have a funny sound when you tap on them almost like they are cheep or something. i don't have the whole front end together so i can't comment on the fitment yet. the trunk lid fits good, did need some tweeking to get to fit the body better though.

been working on getting everything to fit right so nothing good to update for a bit. got everything lined up and should have it welded together by the end of the week.

don't mind the door to fender gaps, the fenders are loose to adjust the doors.

i didn't really want to do it but speed tech said the floor needs cut to make the LS and T56 fit. they also said the engine needs to move to the passenger side to clear the power steeing rack. i put the engine in and if i center it and move it back i can clear the rack, use the stock a/c compressor and the stock f-body oil pan. so thats a few grand in cash i don't have to spend now

I think its for a pocket in the firewall to move the engine farther back. I've seen some jokes about using them but for someone without a lot of metal working tools, it is already a nice shape and is usually decent gauge steel. I say, don't hate.

yes the car will have a/c. i tried my best to retain the stock compressor but the speedtech frame is just too narrow compaired to stock or even the DSE frame. alot of the problem was the steering gear being rear mounted so i had to move the engine to the passenger side because of the steering linkage. had i went with the DSE frame i would have been good to go.

been almost 20 days since the last update. had some things to do with my dad and some other projects going on like building a shifter kart.

even though it doesn't look like much has been done to the car the small stuff takes alot of time. anyways the firewall and trans tunnel are done. the frame is out of the car and speed tech's transmission mounts are cut off. tomorrow i'll grind the welds down and reinstall the frame and stick the engine/trans back in.

after power washing the house for the past few days i got to finish the engine/trans install.

didn't take any pictures but i cut the speedtech transmission mounts off the frame and then smoothed the old welds. then i installed the engine and trans to where i wanted it to be with the best fit for the rest of the stuff i have to do to the car. then i bolted the transmission cross member to the trans and the mounts to the member and rewelded them to the frame. about 4" back from where they were.

for the engine mounts i bent 1 3/4" .134 cage tube and built two uprights. i still need to finish welding and add two supports to make sure the engine doesn't move fore and aft just in case. i tried aftermarket mount adapters but they were not even close to fitting so i went to lowes and bought some steel plate and made my own.

you mean the engine center in the frame? if thats what you mean then no. the engine sits to the pasenger side because of the steering gear. thats what roger speed tech told be that they do because of the power steering lines. it was either off set the engine of raise it really high to clear. if i remember i'll try and get a picture of that tomorrow.

Awesome dedication on this thing! Seems like a project I would try and tackle if I had the funds. One question, on the engine mount in this picture:

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs421.snc4/46459_10150242121460277_537465276_14421102_8031464 _n.jpg

This could be me over engineering, but I feel like there is a need to triangulate that mount.

Tiger

I would triangulate that mount, maybe its as you say over engineering but better safe than sorry.

CamaroAJ
11-15-2010, 08:03 AM
the engine mounts are not done yet, good eyes guys and i was thinking the same thing. i was waiting on getting my steering column mounted so i knew what kind of clearance i have just in case.

i plan on running i brace from the top of the mount forward to the frame on each side. i was concerned about the engine moving forward and back under hard braking and accell.

black2002ls
11-15-2010, 10:19 AM
If I were building those mounts. I would triangulate directly back to the frame, joining your upright with the sub frame. This will add some strength to that joint, and should keep the motor mount from moving. Or, if you are worried about movement front to back, bring the mount front and back, essentially creating a pyramid.

doesn't look pretty but its a pain to wire that many LED's and not short them together.

i seem to have a problem getting a picture of LED's turned on. this is 2 of the 3 park lamps on. it is the perimeter of each lens for park lamps and the center of the outside lenses are brake lamps.

just a small update. mainly welding seams, grinding and some metal finish work so no real pictures of that right now.

started working on converting the electronic HVAC door actuators over to cables. machined two aluminum bushings to attach to the plastic gear on the HVAC module. the mode door is a simple throw arm like the 60's controls were. the temperature door is not so simple because of the amount of room i have to work in. so i made it a push/pull cable. this is as far as i got for now because i have to machine a new more parts for the control head side of things and get a few motorcycle throttle cables ordered so i can adjust the cables.

yes, it has ABS and traction control. for now i am using the 4th gen camaro EBCM/BPMV, if it doesn't work out i will graft the C5 system into it.

I'm a master certified gm tech so i know these systems pretty well. it makes working on these systems hassle free for the most part.

This looks like a great build... even though it isnt a Mustang...:D Just curious, how are you going to match the profile of the dash to the windshield base? I'm using an 04 Cobra dash in my '66 Coupe, and although it's trimmed to fit, I still have to use some kind of filler to finish it out and was wondering if you're going to use 'glass or some kind of epoxy. I think I can get away with glass but Im looking at options. nice work on the metal replacement.

thanks!

We've talked on a couple other threads as I'm doing the same LS conversion into a 64 Skylark conv. Man, your not afraid of much! Great job on a huge project! Cudo's to you for keeping up the build thread. :hail:

I would say I'm about where your at with the LS coversion although I don't have all the body work to tackle as you do. Love the tailights, very cool. What do you plan on doing for headlights and steering wheel? From what I'm getting from talking with Grant, you can't get a steering wheel for this airbag column.

Went to a local car show this past summer and there was a guy who took the shell of a Camaro like yours and grafted it to a 97 Firebird chassis. The car looked awesome, so I've seen that dash in an older Camaro before. He had to make up the chassis length difference in the front fenders. It was his first show and he took home a well deserved trophy.

grant is correct, you cannot get an adapter for an air bag column. they say that because they can't sell you something knowing you will remove your air bag. since your not using air bags in your car you can use grant adapter GRT-3196.

i'm not sure what i am going to do yet about a wheel i am thinking i will just run the stock 4th gen wheel because i have steering wheel controls.

as for head lamps i have a set of HID from a nissan that i am going to convert.

The adapter kit you mentioned will fit the 02 spline? Grant said it was special. Also, is there any way to know for sure that the black housing bell will match the 4 1/4" column diameter of the 02? I've had a Classic Grant wheel for some time but the bell is 1/2" small on the diameter.

Thanks again. No doubt you're going to have a very nice ride when it's done.

small update because i had a small side project to get done first.

got some 16g and 18g sheet metal and made a steel box to block of the driver floor vent. since there is a lot of room behind it i figured it would be a great place to mount the throttle position controller for the traction control. fully TIG welded and smoothed.

CamaroAJ

both cars i just bought a totaled 4th gen SS. took everything i needed and parted out the rest then scraped the cars.

i was thinking the same thing about the ISIS system. people pay a ton of money for them when they can just use OEM stuff. what happens if they are on a road trip and something happens? i can just go to the local GM dealer and order parts. if you go back through this thread you can see where i wired the harness in.

i know newer GM electronics like the back of my hand so i wire them how i want it to work for me. after i get them how i want them i open the schematic in windows paint and redo everything and print it out so if i sell the car someone can figure out what ever they need.

example: the pink wire to the MAF is a 12v switched power that controls a few other sensors. it now also is the switched 12v to my alternator since the corvette alternator needs to see that to turn on unlike the camaro alternator.

started my HID conversion tonight since i didn't get a lot of time to get too deep into anything else.

started with these.
http://www.jegs.com/images/photos/900/938/938-WA7403C.jpg

took some time to get them apart and not brake the glass.
http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/198486_10150426377735277_537465276_17547597_321885 9_n.jpg

got the back side cut off and the HID lens fitted in.
http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/197437_10150426377850277_537465276_17547600_599803 1_n.jpg

after everything looked good i sanded the metal mounting ring and the head lamps and used 3M panel bond. its awesome stuff if you have never used it.

got my oil accumulator today and got it mocked up.

since the space behind the passenger tulip is wasted space now i cut the sheet metal out.

http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/200036_10150427696305277_537465276_17560888_669738 3_n.jpg

its an extra 3qt. of oil just in case i loose pressure at the track in a high G turn. after i finish the top mount i'll fab up a close out panel and use dzus fasteners to hide everything.

AJ -- How are you going to operate it if you need it?

CamaroAJ
03-18-2011, 08:27 PM
it will have the electric solenoid on it, they make it kit that when turned on will discharge and recharge the system as needed. i figured since its a little smaller than the 1/4 turn valve on it now that when i plumb it in after all the fab work is done i can replace it then.

and i already have a custom switch picked out to turn it on:unibrow:

so since i got the seat mounted and the steering column mocked up i was able to build my steering shaft and cut the firewall for the column. i didn't take any "in process" pictures just the done ones.

it just so happens that 2 1/2" exhaust pipe works very well for a pass though when you have angles to deal with.
inside of car
http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/190146_10150433176380277_537465276_17631500_630821 0_n.jpg

outside of car
http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/198887_10150433176700277_537465276_17631504_213448 7_n.jpg

shortened the steering column about 7"
http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/189787_10150433176620277_537465276_17631503_741331 8_n.jpg

then built a lower column mount since the firewall is no longer a mounting point.
http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/199944_10150433176545277_537465276_17631502_739193 2_n.jpg

then i got the intermediate steering shaft done. i had a few GM shafts laying around that were being scrapped at work. the rubber boot is from one of the cobalt steering shafts. so parts from the cobalt shaft and a impala shaft were made to work. its also collapsible to reduce vibration. so far it works pretty good, once i tighten everything up to double check we'll see if it works. if not then i'll build a new one with double D shaft and joints.
http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/189115_10150433176475277_537465276_17631501_726903 1_n.jpg

p.s. 2 turns lock to lock, pretty quick ratio steering gear.

then got the stock seat belt mounts moved back a few inches because of moving the seats back a few inches that way i had the correct belt angle.

http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/206287_10150455375820277_537465276_17771622_349591 9_n.jpg

then tacked them into place after some primer/sealer

been working on this some over the last few days. since i had to cut out a chunk or the floor to mount the rear suspension i needed to replace it now that the suspension is done.

the fill panel mocked up for the last time to check fitment.

a lot of parts showed up this week. which always happens when you don't have time to work on them, got a few things done today though.

my used z06 exhaust i picked up off of corvette forum.
http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/217058_10150541440245277_537465276_17997544_569919 7_n.jpg

got one valve welded into the passenger side muffler after i check for clearance. they will work like factory corvettes. open at 25% and up throttle and 3000 RPM, has to meet both of them not just one. they are 3" flowtech warlock mufflers. they are set up the same as Z06 mufflers but a smaller package and sound better (i hope).

the rest of the exhaust control parts are on back order so i only got a little bit of of the control wiring done.
http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/221946_10150541440045277_537465276_17997540_432486 0_n.jpg

and the fuel cell done.
mocked in the cage to check fitment and measure for the fill panel i needed to make.

pump inside, i'm planning on 4-6 pick ups so i don't have to put in a trap. its the same pump i had in my other car. its been in that car since '06 with zero issues so i feel really good about using it again.

worked on the car for the first time since my last update today. got the rear floor metal work done for the over axle exhaust. and also fixed a stripped out body mount nut. i'm not sure how much lead they used in these aftermarket floor pan nuts but 20ft. lbs is all it took to pull all the threads out.

haven't worked on the car in over a month now. had some things going on but they have settled down so i can get back to work on the car. started earlier this week with some parts i picked up at jegs and goodguys. this covers everything i did this week after i got home in the evenings.

http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/268161_10150706505220277_537465276_19534965_280958 6_n.jpg

since i didn't have a lot of time during the week i knocked out a lot of small projects i wanted to get done. got the drivers body mount access filled.

then i bent up some 18g sheet metal and fixed the driver tulip that had some cancer. this was my first time using a shrinker so i'm pretty happy with how well it come out.

So now that I'm back to work on the Camaro I am updating this thread. I'll start with oldest to latest.

First I got the passenger front inner fender modified to fit the 295's without rubbing.

Then I built bushing ends to a poly bushing and modified the SpeedTech transmission crossmember.

After that I filled the corners at the rear window since I deleted the package tray.

thinking about grafting a pressure vent out of a newer car into the backside of the wiper cowl since i'm not using the astro vents anymore or maybe the kick panels. they are a one way flapper vent that all new cars have. size and shape vary from car to car so it may take some time to find the right one.

i thought about that area too. i have a rear firewall and most of the openings are blocked off so it might not work for me. you will need to build a shield for it if you put it back there though so water and grime from the tires doesn't get into it.

After a lot of measuring and test fitting floor mount pedals it just wasn't worth the time and effort to get the pedals to fit right AND be comfortable in the seat. I said screw it and decided to modify the stock 4th gen camaro pedals. as it turns out it was easier to do than i thought it would be. Still have to mount the clutch master cylinder and gas pedal.

I would assume beyond the obvious visual improvement the doors are probably much nicer (less resistance and quieter) to close. Is that accurate?

They are pretty easy to close yes. I don't have any weather striping yet and the doors are empty so they sound tinnie. I think that will go away once it's all finial assembled.

while it doesn't appear that there is a lot done (at least to me anyways) i have been doing a lot on the car that i am just not going to show until the car is done as some of it might make it into a production run.

machined some bulkheads for the passenger side brake line and the driver side brake, fuel and return lines.

Just a quick update today. Before body work got too far on the firewall I decided to remove the factory stamped X in the driver tulip and mount the wiper motor there. Since I don't currently own any dimple dies I had to settle for a wood hole and my handy router.

http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/s720x720/481097_10151950254350277_291595970_n.jpg

I dimpled the 3 spots where the wiper motor bolts would hit the firewall with a socket and two hammers.
http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc7/s720x720/318726_10151950256820277_409837443_n.jpg

Wiper motor mounted
http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc6/s720x720/251816_10151950258335277_1883636007_n.jpg

Then I decided to update the 43 year old wiper transmission with the left over parts from the donor car. With the piece I cut out to shorten one arm I needed to use to make the other one longer.
http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/s720x720/480709_10151950259850277_1745309406_n.jpg

I also used the larger socket balls for a low friction squeak free wiper transmission. A quick trip to the sand blaster and they'll be ready for paint.
http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/s720x720/561056_10151950262115277_1767909883_n.jpg

The bottom of the car is almost ready for paint. One more coat of slick sand and a quick sand and its ready for sealer, primer, seam sealer and paint.

Car is 90% seam sealed. I was waiting on doing the rear section until after two last things were finished up in the rear. This is one of the two things needed done. Sadly there is a few projects going on with the car that it has been strongly recommended to me that I not post online at this point:unibrow: . Now that they are both done the bare metal will be epoxied and seam sealed then its ready for paint.

Got lots of stuff done over the past few weeks with the little bit of time I've had to work on the car. First we got the watts link bracket and fuel cell cage masked off and painted.

Its been a bit since my last update. Didn't get much work on the car done for sometime then I started picking it up again here and there. Got quite a bit done paint wise too.

Engine cleaned and prepped for paint.

http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/577225_10152142967405277_1294939296_n.jpg

Finished up the cowl tonight and got it in epoxy so it shouldn't rust out ever again.

Looks Good. Is the paint on the trans and motor full gloss or does it have flattener in it? They look great.

Full gloss. The pictures do not do the color justice and neither does the lights in the garage. In the sun it looks more black than bronze and is real shiny.

I've been working on quite a bit of stuff on the car just mostly stuff I'm not going to post pictures of. I did get the engine and transmission installed.

The stainless collectors showed up today for the Tri-Y headers and I picked up a few boxes of random bends from Stainless Works.

Spent the rest of the afternoon building the passenger header.

I ran out of gas for the TIG so I'll have to start the driver side header when I get some more gas.
