Super rare IMO to to see a mid-50's Ford built to that level.

Here is a link that shows all the Great 8 contenders. Personally I think its between the '56 ford and the '40 ford. Everything I have read online is leaning towards the '56 taking it home this year. There are one or two vehicles in the great 8 that I'm not 100% sure how they made it into the great 8. Maybe photos aren't doing them justice?

Bruce and Judy Ricks' 1956 Ford Sunliner "Suncammer" is powered by a 427-inch single overhead cam engine with four-barrel carburetors. The six-year restoration and modification, which features only nickel-plated rather than chromed pieces, took Ricks of Sapulpa, Okla. and his builder Steve Cook of Oklahoma City six year to complete.

"Details, details, details," said Ricks, whose bound background book for the judging included intricate drawings of the custom parts designed and built for Suncammer. "There are 300 special nuts and handmade custom bolts, for example," Ricks explained. What appears to be chromed trim is actually nickel-plated, he added.
"There is no chrome, no billeted aluminum on this car," said Ricks, who spent six years overseeing the Ford project.

It's almost like the builders are able to schedule around the right year to take the trophy home in recent years. The cars that win seem to have all been way beyond the nearest competition, and those builders almost seem to bow out allowing someone else to carve a new notch in their walking stick.

05 = Foose (3rd time)/Impression 36 Ford
06 = Burman/Radster 35 Ford
07 = Trepanier/First Love 36 Ford
08 = Divers/Ferrambo 60 Rambler wagon
09 = Johnson/Duecenburg 32 Ford
10 = Thomas/Gold Digger 33 Ford
11 = Cook/Suncammer 56 Ford

Back in 06-07 it was said that if Foose showed up the award was his - he was the man to beat. Then Troy won, and people were saying they didn't know how anyone was ever going to top First Love. I was chompin at the bit to see Foose and Trepanier go head to head for the Ridler - my popcorn is stale and my beer is flat now! It's almost like there was some type of opposition to this type of dominance and competition, and a sort of unwritten community fairness policy instituted.

I'm all for sharing, but competition is supposed to be won by the one with the killer instinct. Imagine if your team decided in the middle of the season they had enough rings, and purposely fouled any chances of being in a Bowl Game! Imagine if your favorite boxer or MMA fighter decided, about mid-fight, "know you what, I've hit you enough already, why don't you have a few rounds of practice on my head? Just to make it a fair fight!" :lol:

Just going by the pictures, the '56 Ford looked like the hands down winner. Different and absolutely stunning! I'm glad to see something other than a 1930s something get the award as well.

Cool, updating again. I have pics, but no details. Now I have a file name for the folder. ;) I still don't know anything about the 10 winner. Have pics of the Great 8 from last year, but can't remember which one won? Ford should get a "manufacturer's cup" for Ridler wins. :)

Yeah that's it, Gold Digger! Thanks! My little list is complete. If you want to win the Ridler, you'd better start shopping for a Ford! (j/k) :D Six out of seven years ain't bad tho. It would be interesting to see what makes won different major awards most in the industry over the last decade.

Congrats to the Suncammer!

Haha, no kidding. Koys or cast Foose's. Maybe they should reconsider the 'top 8' and take it back to 2 or 3.

A coast to coast bodied car with TTII's ? Really, is it '98? :question:

My thought is that if the Ring Brothers would have held back on debuting Dragon, they could have perhaps won the Ridler..

I will get crap from this.....That was the worst picks I have seen. Not much to pick from this year, Two years ago none of those cars would have had a chance. Steve Cook is a very good builder tho.

You won't get it from me. The way I look at it, put the current winner up against former winners like Impression and First Love. Would they have even look like they should be in the same circle?

I think the right car won for this year. However overall I agree that the Great 8 this year was very weak. I know that its a very small club of people that are willing to spend a million + dollars on a car. I would like to see a Chip Foose, Troy Trepanier, Alan Johnson, Roger Burman, Ring Brothers go for the Ridler all in the same year. What would be really awesome though, if all these guys went for it and some builder that we don't even now of came out and beat them all for it. Highly unlikely I know but it has happened, just look at what Duane Steck did with moonglow back in the mid 50's.

Edit: I would have to add Dale Boesch to the list of builders I would like to see compete. I love the cars he builds but it seems like he doesn't come out with a car except for every once in a while.

This 56 Was really heads and shoulders nicer than most builds.
I personally thought last years feild was weaker than this years, of course there always seems to be a few how the hell did that car make it in the feild, but wow the 56 vert. was steller. Way nicer than last years winner.

Would be fun to see all the big dogs compete at same time,

Last years winner should have been the dodge truck from steve auto restoration which had a 99% custom fab steel body instead of the fiber glass Car that won
