I want to get some tires orderd soon. I have a 68 camaro with stock tubs. running hotchkis 1.5" lowerd leafs. I dont mind trimming the outter lip to get the widest tires possible will a 285/40/18 work or should i play it safe and run a 275. the car will mostly just see the road and not many track days. thanks.

285 can work, but it will be very tight and the wheel backspacing will be have to be dead on. Trimming the quarter lip will help in making it fit.

On a 68 I would i would go 275 max on a 9" rim. I have a 275 on a 9.5" and it's tight. I still get the odd rub on hard lauches.

Mine has a 275 out back and it is tightest on the right inner wheelwell. The outers seem matched but space to inner wheelwells are definitely different in my case.

I have 275/40 on 9.5" 17's with 5.5" bs

Agreed. I ran 275/40/18's on my '68 convertible for years.
With 9.5" wide wheels and a 5.5" BS, I seldom had rubbing issues.

I carefully trimmed & rolled the outer lips, and still kept the chrome wheel well moldings. I ran Hotchkis springs too- i rubbed on the inside fender well near the frame rail pulling into sharp driveways & gas stations as the car's suspension articulated. Only enough to fade away the black paint.

Note ride height for clearance. 1967-8 Camaros have different clearance concerns than 1969's. The problem usually lies in clearance at the 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock positions- that's one reason why the wheelwell was stretched for '69s.
