I just ordered one of these from Paul at C&R and it shows a lot of promise!

http://www.semashow.com/press/2013/08/15/cr-racings-new-lsa-heat-exchanger-for-69-camaros

Paul spent a good amount of time explaining to me how they did the R&D on it and will be the quality we expect from C&R. It will bolt into the stock radiator support with no mods to the latch assembly and fits in conjunction with a Vintage Air Condenser (condenser on outside with exchanger in between).

Should have it in soon with lots of pics. This should be a welcome fix for those of us running a supercharger in a first gen Camaro!

Is this bigger than the factory heat exchanger?

snappytravis
10-26-2014, 11:20 PM
I am not sure what you mean by the factory one, it .mounts in front of ac condenser. It is pretty good sized I think bigger that what you would see in a ctsv caddilac. I ended up using a pump from lingenfelter for mine and purchasing several hoses with 90 degree bends worked pretty good.

Yes I meant Caddy or ZL1. I guess I didn't articulate my question very well :bang:

I thought that was what you meant, I think they may be a tad bit bigger, Just curious how much is a zl1 or Cadillac exchanger?

I think this style is not as tall but thicker. I like the fans,, have to build some brackets to mount. The cr racing on bolts together pretty good.

Yes the C&R looks like a nice easy set up to use. I had just seen that advertisement you posted earlier tonight for the CTS V

I've got one of these for my 69 Camaro LSA conversion. Won't be installed for a few weeks though.

Anyone up and running with one of these yet?

I've had mine running for 4 months now and it does a great job. My tuner says it controls inlet temps much better than the stock Magnuson heat exchanger. He was impressed to say the least!

What have you all used for a reservoir on these?

snappytravis
12-08-2014, 10:15 PM
That's the tricky part, I looked and looked, I think a person could use a reservoir out of a magnuson kit for 5th gen Camaro. It is small and mounts to the firewall, I however figured that the more capacity I had for coolant the better it may cool.

So I looked up canton racing and ordered a blem tank( small weld splatter on the aluminum) It is a batter box style tank for a mustang. I built a frame much like a battery box out of 1 inch angle. I mounted it to the radiator support and to the inner fender on the passengers side.

I then went and bought several different length 90 degree bend hoses, say 4 inches, then 14 or 16 or 18. They run down between the tank and radiator and under the radiator support to the front of vehicle where the intercooler pump is mounted. then out of pump into the heat exchanger.

I ordered a pump from lingenfelter it had the harness and everything with it.
Good luck, Hope I helped you out,

https://www.cantonracingproducts.com/product/80-237/80-237---BATTERY-BOX-SUPERCHARGER-TANK-05-10-MUSTANGS/

look up gates 28474 hose. You can get a different ones with various lengths, then cut to fit your setup.

How did you all mount the bottom bracket? I noticed they spacers and bolts included with the kit and I assume they want you to drill through the core support but there were no instructions.

I believe I did and ran the bolts through the back side. Spacers just keep from crushing radiator support. Hope this helps

Travis which pump did you get from Lingenfelter? I just got the Stewart EMP pump to use in my car, and last week I called C&R to talk about the Heat exchanger.

This one, I mounted it on the bottom of the rad support on passengers side. I used one of the bolts that runs through the bottom of the heat exchanger and mounted the pump horizontal with the band clamp that comes with it. Then ran my wiring down the pas inner fender. Then 5 miles of hoses! If you need pictures pm me you cell and I can text you a few next time I go to the shop. I know they make higher volume pumps I just didn't think I really needed one with the volume of coolant I have in my reservoir and the size of the heat exchanger.

Hey I noticed the hood latch clears the heat exhanger but hits the top lip on the a/c condenser. How did you all resolve this? Does cutting the lip off the condenser give you enough clearance? Should I worry about messing up the condenser if I cut that lip off?

I think it says in the directions,, that you go like seven holes in on each side notch it out. I did that and then the latch still hit when you went to pop the safety on the latch. So you can do two things. Either trim the latch down where it will hit the condenser. Buy a vw style latch and catch for the hood and build a plate or order one from ironworks I believe sells one. The only other choice would be hood pins. I am not big on them but it may be a simple solution. I think some grinding on the back of hood latch will take care of it.

Straight from the link above, but I think the got the height and width dimensions crossed.
Width (in): 26.000 in.
Height (in): 36.000 in.

Do they make a fan assembly that fits this heat exchanger ??

waynieZ

Where it's mounted it draws through the radiator so that fan pulls the air for it.

I got this piece in this week from Summit. It only came with the Heat Exchanger and top bracket. Is there a bottom bracket and mounting hardware? Am I missing pieces? (It's typical if I am) There is nowhere to mount the bottom pegs....

TIA - Derek

Mine is for a 68 but i think they should be the same. there should be a bottom bracket and some mounting hardware as well. here ia link to a pic showing the bottom bracket.

http://www.lsxmag.com/features/sema-coverage/sema-2013-cr-racing-makes-lsa-swaps-easy-for-69-camaros/

the mounting hardware that came with mine included three bolts/nuts/and spacers. i could not figure out how to incorporate the spacers, so installed without just fine. I called C&R and discussed the spacers and did not come to a final conclusion, although they were very friendly and receptive.

I used the spacers to go inside the lower radiator support so it wouldn't crush when you tighten the bolts.

C&R now makes a heat exchanger for the Gen V LT4 application in a first gen with inlet and discharge on the driver's side (as opposed to the LSA application on passenger side). Same price too!

56-00010 was discontinued and replaced by 56-00015.

I have a 56-00010. It's not engine specific. Mine is is made to fit in a 1st gen Camaro. It could be used in other vehicles but you may have fitment issues and it will require you to fab your own mounting brackets.

randy

is it worth it going to a 56-00015? The zl1 heat exchanger is much cheaper. I know the C&R piece is "bolt in" but at $750 is it worth it and how much more efficient over a stock unit?
