Here is my current Corvette build.

I purchased this car this past January and started disassembling it on May 29th. The previous owner did a nice job building the car and it handled well for a stock frame with upgraded suspension, but when he was building the car the variety of aftermarket frames and ls motors were not available...there is only so much you can do with a stock frame.

When purchased...super nice car to start the project with.

Also in early June

50 hours deep

I was watching overhaulin' the other night and saw how they were using tape to create a form for fiberglass, so i tried it on the firewall where the heater box hole will no longer be necessary thanks to the newer vintage air unit. It worked well, but i ended up needing to still put a layer of glass on the backside for support.

New dolley came in yesterday. I assembled it this evening and mounted it under the car. No big updates for now. I've been busy hustling to get another car ready for paint, so i havent had time to work on the 63 this week.

7/17/13 Took a day to work on the dash since the pads arrived.
57 hours

I started to work on some of the interior items in anticipation of the SRIII chassis and 63 hood arriving soon.

I wet sanded the dash, primed it in areas where i had rubbed through eliminating drips, and then repainted it with SEM hot rod black.

8/21/13 I started working on the car full time and put my other projects aside.

I removed a large majority of the old paint from the firewall and fender skirts, but still a lot to go before epoxy primer. At this point, i was also in the process of fitting the new components on the firewall and in the engine bay to insure everything fit correctly.

I really did not want to get this far into bodywork, but the door gaps on this car were massive at the front and rear and I just couldn't leave them that way.

Finished narrowing the gap on the driver's side door and fitting the door to the roof, quarter, and fender. The door stuck out past the roof panel just in front of the indentations previously , but that problem is now resolved.

119 hours At this point I started to have a whole new appreciation for people that do body work day in and day out. Miserable!!!

IF you purchase a new hood, order it in two pieces and bond it together yourself with 3m panel bond. This hood fit like crap and it is supposed to be the best on the market

This was the worst fitting spot on the hood.

The passenger door stuck up a good bit above the body and no amount of adjustment in the hinges would help. I had to sand the top of the door down to get proper fitment. The gap was wide at the front, so i had to narrow it as well.

306 hours total Body work is brutally time consuming!

It only took around 2 hours to remove the rear compartment and jackwell and temporarily install the new wheels wells and floor to check fitment. Mike's/SRIII rear floor really simplifies things and was well worth the 350.00. I payed 2300.00 to have the old floor cut out and a new one fabricated for my 66 last year. Total time in this floor will be around 6 hours once all is said and done. Cost is 350.00 for the floor and 40.00 for a tube of 3m panel bond.

After seeing a 63 split window without an antenna at SEMA i decided that i would copy that person's car and do the same. Removing the antenna gives the rear of the car a much sleeker look. I used a Hideaway antenna on a custom Mustang i built last year, so i will do the same for this one.

Two more coats of slick sand and a whole hell of a lot more sanding. I sure hope this thing is as smooth as glass! Oh, and surprise...I ordered SPI black today for the basecoat. I saw a 63 in cyber gray a few weeks ago and it did not look so hot. I thought about switching to silver, but most every 63 restomod i have seen in the last year has been silver, so black it is...straight black, no metallic.

I dropped the car off two weeks ago at paint. They fit the hood a bit better and adjusted the wiper grilles, but that is about all that has happened so far. Hopefully they can have it in color by January. Apparently my novice skills at blocking werent the best, so they are going to reshoot the car with slick sand and block one more time.

The night before i dropped her off at the painter.

I added 3 rocker tabs back per side to support the rocker panels. I had the tabs leftover from the 66 i built last year, which i added sidepipes to.

Both headlamp bucket skins had come unglued, so i bonded them back together with 3m panel bond.

And, i decided to switch to the american auto wire afrermarket harness instead of modifying the new 63 harnesses i purchased, so i glassed and filled in the cut out for the fuse box in the firewall.

Thanks! I had a local shop spray it as i was not confident enough to make this my first full car to spray base and clear on. They had to clean up a good bit of novice body work as well. I still have a lot to learn!

I decided to match up the calipers to the paint. I did not want to pay the extra 400-500 to have them powdercoated black,(might as well go for a wilwood upgrade if i was going to spend the extra money), so i ordered them in standard reconditioned color. A simple $8.00 can of dupont caliper paint and about 10 mintues per caliper, and I have black calipers.

If i did, i would be purchasing them! They are almost impossible to find now. Even major project split windows are going for close to 35-40 grand now, if you can even find one of those. Crazy! The market absolutely exploded over the past year.

Thanks!

The last one i saw for sale that was nice went for 29,000. It had a great body and tons of nice parts. I did not move quickly enough on it and it was gone in a flash. By the time the new owner sells of the original parts, he will probably only have 15 in it. That was in November. Since then, i have seen nothing but junk at very high prices...cars with completely rotten or crushed bird cages...carved up and modified bodies that would be near impossible to put back to normal, etc. They are still out there, but you might have to wait a year to find one that is decent and not extremely overpriced. If you are going to pay 40,000 for a turd that needs cage work, half its panels replace, and is missing tons of parts, you might as well buy one with a non original motor for 55,000 or 60

We lowered the body back on the chassis today. Had a good bit of interference on the fender skirts at the rear of the control arms and the lower portion at the bend in the frame rails. A little minor trimming with a saber saw and everything cleared.
Oh, and BTW, if you ever plan on using the original wheels as rollers on a newer chassis, be warned, they will hit the quarter panels. We had to double stack body spacers at the rear for clearance.

I installed the Vintage AC this afternoon. What a PITA. I dont know how anybody manages to install their new system with the dash still in place. I had to remove all of the electrical components from the box just to gain enough clearance to slide it into place. It will go into place easily without the hoses connected, but once they are installed, it's a battle. If you attempt to install the hoses afterward, well, good luck!

My tools of choice. The hydraulic flaring tool was expensive, but it certainly has come in handy over the past 10 years!

The steel wheels are just rollers from an original chassis and don't fit well on the new chassis. 245's will fit up front without a problem. I don't think i would want to modify the wheel wells after paint...that would be very poor planning on my part! Without modifying or adding aftermarket rear quarters, 295's are the max for the rear.

Nice build!

Im 5' 7", so thanks for the compliment. ;) The factory seats actually go back pretty far and can accommodate most people...my uncle is 6'2" and he enjoyed his C2 for about 25,000 miles before selling it. However, one must be careful when installing newer model seats in a C2. I used C5 seats in the 66 Restomod I built last year and they were way too tight, even for a midget like me.

The trick is to sneak up on the seal -- don't go all rambo on the first tightening.... I tighten a bit - and back off - then give it another tighten and you'll find you go a bit further - then back off and then give it another little bit more.... about 3 or 4 times and she'll be just right.

What a lot of folks do is kill the brass cone inside the female fitting - the SS is so much harder... so you need to sneak up on having it mate. JUST the way I've found it works for me.

Love the build! Makes me want to buy back my '67 Coupe from my buddy and put a nice SRIII chassis or The Roadster Shop chassis under it!

I also add a dab of anti-seize because of the steel threads on the aluminum... It helps to keep them from galling - as well as makes it easier on the threads down the road.

http://i852.photobucket.com/albums/ab83/65silververt/63%20Split%20Window%20Corvette%20Restomod/corvettewiring2_zps680c9d17.jpg

Another extra benefit of the GM control pack is that the electrical box has extra power ports. Mounting it near the electric brake booster came in handy...now i can just run the wire from the booster straight up to the spare terminal on the electrical box.

http://i852.photobucket.com/albums/ab83/65silververt/63%20Split%20Window%20Corvette%20Restomod/corvettewiring3_zps7bc7c285.jpg

I searched the internet for quite some time looking for a pedal mount for the GM pedal that would work on a C2 Corvette. The mount that comes with the kit doesn't line up well with the firewall and if you use it, you must weld long spacers to the back of it and it still wont line up well due to the e-brake assembly.
I found this Pedal Mount bracket from a company called Samburg Performance. It is made for a mazda or rx7 conversion, but worked well for the Corvette once modified.
Here is the link
http://www.rx7v8.com/product/fd-drive-by-wire-throttle-pedal-mount/

I simply cut the mount in half where i felt was the best location, overlapped and lowered the mount, then welded it back together. I could have cut out the unused portion, but overlapping the two pieces will make for a much stronger bracket. I find it easier to just buy a bracket and modify it rather than spending hours making my own. It took me about 20 minutes to cut and reweld the bracket.

I'm most likely going to use an electric e brake, but i mounted an older unit i had sitting around so y'all can see just how close the e brake will be to the pedal. It's tough to run the stock e brake handle with a drive by wire pedal.

Thanks! It's moving a bit slower than I would like, but that's just the way it goes.
This is my second pro touring/restomod Corvette build, but I have restored ten C2 Vettes.

12" Centerforce dual friction clutch(comes with ARP bolts and alignment tool) Im a big fan of this clutch. I used this clutch last year as well to replace the damaged clutch(do to improper installation by the chassis company) on the last restomod.

Reconditioned Original 621 Bellhousing. BTW, DON'T use allen head bolts to install the bellhousing, use hex or 12 point. If you need to change your clutch or remove the bellhousing for any reason in the future once the body is on, you wont be able to get a socket on the two upper allen bolts.

http://i852.photobucket.com/albums/ab83/65silververt/63%20Split%20Window%20Corvette%20Restomod/63clutch4_zps8e538df2.jpg

Here you can see the repro and original side by side. I think the bellhousing i received might even be a knock off of the reproduction. The metal is extremely porous and the casting number in the side is very faint. It was so far out of whack that it will be going back to the company I purchased it from.

http://i852.photobucket.com/albums/ab83/65silververt/63%20Split%20Window%20Corvette%20Restomod/63bellhousing2_zps1e2d9ea8.jpg

Again, here you can see just how porous the reproduction is.

Dash is finished and installed. Gauges are only temporarily installed. I still have a little bit of wiring to tidy up. I changed the bezels to black because I did not care for the silver. I also decided not to use the radio surround bezel as I like the way the new radio looks without it.

I still need to detail the floor pans, but other than that, the underside is finished. This is one car i will be very proud to put mirrors under!!!

Absolutely beautiful! You did an awesome job. Let me know how the LS3 drives. Curious as I have read where some people say the ASA cam is too aggressive for normal cruising and others state it is fine.

Thanks, Jay!

As long as you pair the 525hp LS3 with the right transmission and rear gear ratio, plus install a honeycomb air straightener, it is fine.

Beautiful! My favorite year of Corvette, done the way I'd like it myself. I'd love to go for a ride in that thing.

Only one minor little detail.....You've got to get rid of the yellow ring dipstick. Maybe a dipstick with the same aesthetic treatment as the valve covers would be nice. You could simply have it dipped. That darn dipstick is the first thing I noticed in the under hood shot and my eyes kept being drawn to it. Kind of like a wart or big mole on someones face....you can't help but stare at it. LOL

Thanks for the comments. It's not quite finished, but thanks for noticing the smallest detail on the car and critiquing it...the dipstick. :buttkick: Only kidding...yes, it does stick out like a sore thumb, but really only in photos. However, i will address it.

Here is a short run video from yesterday. I love custom stainless exhaust and Borla mufflers! I never thought I would spend so much on an exhaust system, but it was worth it!

video in next post

What gear ratio did you go with? Are you using the GM ECM/harness that goes with the engine?

Once again, it is awesome the exhaust sounds great. I cant believe C5 exhaust fit that nice. Boze rims really look good as I would have not thought those would have looked that nice on C2's.

Yes, i am using the GM harness. I am using the 3.73 gear ratio with the .84 overdrive tremec. I recommend going with hurst driveline if they have a unit for your car and you need a tremec conversion.

-Only the rear muffler sections fit well, which still needed to be modified. Im embarrassed to say how much the exhaust cost overall.

-I agree, the Boze rims fit well with the car, but i was nervous about it initially as well. it's a c2...i assume you just fat fingered that one.

Yep, fat fingered it. I grew up around C2 vettes as my uncle had 2, one was a 66 (L72) 427/450 hp convertible (one of the first ones that was labeled 450 hp, before GM re-rated it to 425 HP) that he bought new and oddly the second one was a 63 black split window. He also had a 57 and 70 LT1.

I agree with you on going with Hurst driveline. On my 69 Camaro, I have had the TK600 for number of years now and also run 3.73's. Thanks for answering my questions.

Again, car is amazing and engine sounds great! Are you going to have it tuned or stay with the GM tune?

I'll probably just stick with the GM tune.

Id like that 57! I plan on building a c1 restomod at some point.

To me, it is the perfect sound. I used factory side pipes without a cross over on the last Corvette restomod I built and while it looked cool, it was just a bit too much sound and without the cross over, the pulse just didn't seem right.
It's funny how as you get older your taste changes in exhaust. I used to love loud sidepipes, but now (at least for me) an exhaust that is too loud can ruin a car. I always get so irritated with the people at auctions that rev the crap out of their engines...do they not know they are pissing everyone off around them and making their car look bad??? :buttkick: If you are willing to start and rev your car when it is cold, then i have to wonder how well it has been treated. End of random rant.

Engine sounds great. The 63 split window never gets old, especially when it has been transformed like this one.

We now need a vid of you running it through the gears. :excited:
