So, as my truck build winds down (it's a 68 GMC C1500 with a bunch of goodies) I needed something else to play with. I've always wanted a 2nd gen Camaro. Something about the 72 vintage that I love, considering that I am a 72 vintage.

Long story short, I got the itch to get rid of a Chopper I built/bought... a 2012 Bourget Fat Daddy with a 131 Cubic inch R&R motor in it. Was offered a trade, plus some cash and took it.

It's a 73 Camaro, pretty base model, but someone spent some time with it. It has the original 350 LT, 4 speed manual and floors that came with it. Fenders are a little tender and it's not the best paint, but very workable. Someone also added a Weiand 177 blower to it.

After reading around a bunch of different vendors, picking up some guidance and talking with my friend Darren at Ride Tech, we've decided on the following mods: Scott Mock C6 mandrel bent frame, Scott Mock installed 5th Gen Camaro IRS, de-tuned LS3 (reducing stroke, increasing bore) to mimic an old school DZ302 (more like DZ329), DSE mini tubs, Ride Tech shocks, ZR1 TR6060 trans and a bunch of stainless exhaust. Will get Pro Car Rally seats in black leather, vintage air and a heck of an audio system.

Already have most of the parts in the garage. Just waiting to strip the Camaro, load the parts in the enclosed trailer and take a drive for a burrito.

Oh and this is not my first rodeo. My dad started a restoration business in 1972 that I inherited when he passed on. Performance cars are fun, but wanted to send this out to someone who's built a bunch of them. We do things like 60's Ferrari's, Porsches and other stock exotics that don't handle, accelerate or brake like this one will.

The intent is a cruiser that when thrown into a corner will cause you to vomit.

To that end, I hope to lighten it up quite a bit. The entire Anvil carbon fiber catalog will be thrown at it.

To slow it down, I worked with Jay at Budnik and picked up some Baer 14" brakes... we're also doing wheels while he's at it.

I did an intro a while back with my truck. I've promised a few folks a build thread. Figured I'd start with something we're actually building vs one that's mostly finished. WaynieZ made me do it :hello:

As I said, first thing I did was read about 60 or 70 build threads, from end to end.

Darren talked me into a Ride Tech Tiger Cage (love stainless and aluminum). Also have to run their shocks, since he's helped me with so many projects. I am going to lift his daughter's power wheels for him, since he won't do it himself.

I spoke to a few frame and sub frame manufacturers and really wanted IRS. Have you looked at the cost?

Enter in my penchant for factory engineering and trying to retrofit what I can... if they spend hours and millions developing something, it has to be good.

Enter in the 2013 Camaro SS rear suspension pull out. It's out of a 6 mile car that got dropped off the car carrier. It's nice to have friends in low places, as most of you would cry at what I paid for this and 4 other complete cars. I dropped out the center diff, intending to add a 9" or Strange 60 center chunk. Seems the aftermarket support is amazing for this config, as I found adjustable rear links, stronger center sections and different axle shafts out the wazoo. I also have a ZL1 differential with the LSD and larger gear sets. Will be fun breaking it.

Since my 8 year old said: "I love small cars with big horsepower" I had to change up some things while we were cruising to her soccer games. The 70's called, they wanted their 14" unilugs... and I had a set of Boyd (the real ones, not the Chinese ones) in 17" and 18" that would fit this car and provide no traction for great burn outs... so they went on. This car also has a 70's vintage Cherry Bomb exhaust, you know, what everyone had in the 70's, hated ever since, but got a revival in the late 2000's?

I am so NOT wearing plaid pants, ever again.

I mentioned a DZ302 like build.

I had one in a 1st gen Camaro. Loved that I could rev the piss out of it. Pretended that I raced Trans-Am back in the day.

I also found a Callies Magnum XL crank for dirt cheap on eBay. Again, people would cry. It's a 3.185" stroke. Add 6.350" Callies Ultra H beam rods and a .30 over bore with some other fun stuff in the motor and you end up with a high revving light weight power plant that looks like it should live in a 73 Mullet Mobile.

I did a dual quad intake on it... not sure if that will stay, as I may do a cross ram intake with dual throttle bodies. Still playing with the "look" of the motor, but it's light weight (100lbs or more lighter than the SBC with blower) with more HP/TQ than the SBC.

This motor should go well with the TR6060 that's being built for this. Carbon Fiber synchros, bronze pads on every fork, center shift conversion that started off in a ZL1 and is now being worked over to live at high rpm, including external oil ports for a cooler, reservoir and oil pump.

This is going to be an awesome build.

Hi Scott!

My oldest daughter loves the red... and we've decided the car needs to be pull me over red. I talked her into a gold base with candy apple red over the top. Since we're doing carbon fiber, she's also letting me do RS/SS stripes in carbon fiber that will be clear coated with the rest of it.

Jay at Budnik is doing G5's for me, with brushed centers in what ever size Scott tells me will clear the biggest square meats we can fit.

grendel
10-15-2014, 06:35 PM
We decided that the cowl hood's gone... and since we're doing carbon fiber that the interior needed to be black. It was also a bit destroyed by the previous owner(s) so we also added Dakota Digital gauges to the mix. BTW, the car was originally baby poop brown, so I feel like I can do anything I want to this very un-original car. Although metallic root beer is a color that I want to do on a vehicle, maybe a Jeep, as I do those too.

Scott also wanted the motor, trans, interior and gas tank out. Said something about not welding near fumes, afraid to blow himself up ...

Oh, we also added JW Speaker LED headlights, as we had them kicking around. Somehow, the interior fell out. It's also fairly tall... but had some REALLY thick sway bars. Redid the steering at this point to make it less floaty, but WOW is the suspension shot.

Upper A-arm mounts are done. We also talked about a brace strut, as the Tiger Cage won't connect to the firewall, so we have a bung on the top of the A-arm mount. Should add quite a bit of rigidity for both the suspension and frame. The frame will triangulate the firewall and each side in a H configuration. I do this on my high speed 4wd builds that take 15' whoops at 70+ mph.

The welds continue to be amazing and metal prep looks like it will be beautiful with either powder coat or electrostatic charged paint. You can also see that the coil over mount will have multiple adjustment points, same as I do with the Class 4 trucks we've built.

I have not read many using 5th Gen factory parts on a 2nd Gen. Just kits by other manufacturers. We'll see what this takes to get it done, Scott may turn it into a kit as well.

So, I drove 1500 miles starting Friday, got there Saturday in time for a good Burrito. Left my Camaro, a boat load of parts, my 2012 GMC Sierra and my 32' all aluminum trailer with Scott and flew out today, in time to watch the Patriots take out the Broncos.

After meeting Scott and seeing his shop, I know he's the right person to:

Gut the car, it drove off the trailer.
Build a front sub-frame with C6 suspension, Flaming River rack and pinion and ride tech 3 way shocks that mounts a LS3 and TR6060. I brought motor mounts, trans mounts, rear differential mounts, sub frame mounts and a whole lot more.
Install a complete stainless exhaust.
install the ride tech tiger cage.
install front kick down bars to his sub frame.
build round tube sub frame connectors.
install/modify the rear 5th gen Camaro suspension.
install the brake booster, clutch master cylinder, steering column, intermediate shaft and u-joints
modify the fire wall and trans tunnel for the TR6060, LS3 and associated shifter
install the DSE mini tubs
mount a 4th Gen Camaro center console
His prices are also very good, so I ordered a new wiring harness, ride tech tiger cage, ride tech shocks and an AC kit for my Camaro.
Measure for an install a fuel tank.
More I am forgetting.

We fly back on December 4th to drive it all home.

I also got to order my entire list of goods, so the car should be in very good shape when it comes back. EFI, seats, clutch, bell housing, etc.

I got back home to see pics like this:

You'd have a shorter drive than I did :).

As far as I know, these options were available. The mandrel bent rails were in the corner of his shop, rusting away.

I challenged Scott, as he under prices his work and most people push for "cheap" instead of "awesome". I told him to err on awesome. I want his best and gave him the freedom to push himself.

Instead of the dual quad carbs, I decided on FAST 2.0 EZ EFI. It will control the MSD coils and timing just fine.

Summit sent me a mighty care package today. Will be fun to install it all.

grendel
11-05-2014, 05:37 AM
Summit dropped off a care package for me yesterday. My son had a blast opening the boxes and taking pictures for me. He thinks he's getting the car. Scott also ordered all the ride tech stuff needed for the car. Fuel cell is the last item needed, we're probably going to need something custom. Have a care package going to him, as soon as Flaming River sends my steering intermediate shaft and lower u-joint for the rack that's already with Scott. I picked up a new stainless and powder coated column for it. Will use a Budnik wheel.

So, the FAST EFI looks like a thing of beauty. Sadly, I was going for looks and I think they nailed it. I also went for HP, and this has enough fuel for 1200hp. I also picked up new coils, as I like running the same thing across all vehicles, when I can. Again, also supports 1200+ HP.

Had a set back with the engine build. We got the wrong rods... so had to pop another 1K plus for the right ones... :G-Dub:

Reciprocating assembly will now support 1500 HP. Heads are good for 1200.

Oh and the transmission is warrantied for 1800hp.

Sensing something wicked this way coming.

We're measuring to be sure the rear Camaro Brembo brakes will fit. If not, pretty sure ZO6 brakes will. Or Baers... since I have them in the front.

The rusty hub is the Camaro rear.

It's been a bad day for the Camaro... first the rear end falls out, then the entire engine, trans and sub frame drops out.

Fortunately, Scott made a cart to haul around the new one... and it's all going in soon.

Seems like most of the ed-construction is done. We have a new column, slave cyl with bracket, new intermediate steering shaft, new steering ujoints and hydro booster to go on the firewall. New exhaust, new trans, new engine, new front subframe, new rear suspension...

Should be fun. It is sad seeing it completely apart. I am glad I am not doing it though. Hard to take down a car that my youngest daughter loves and said "I love little cars with big horsepower". She turns 9 on Sunday.

I visited KC for work, so decided to take Scott out for dinner. We ate half a cow... seriously, the steak house we went to served me the "Tomahawk Chop" - 3 lbs of bone in deliciousness.

I also got to visit with my car. Scott's a genius, he made the best handling car, ever - The Hover Car - It uses repulsor technology.

Actually, he has it on a cart to move around. Working in the "business" you have to hate customers like me. He spent a lot of time to disassemble the car with the nose on. When I visited, I focused on the ugliness that is the firewall... and had a might as well moment. Yep, the nose is coming off, so Scott can shave the firewall completely. We're moving the wiper motor to the driver's fender and have all new slave and master cyl brackets. Of course, the new motor is an LS, so the big honking coil goes away too.

During dinner, after I visited, Scott let the cat out of the bag. The paint is hiding lots of ugliness. I never really looked at it, knew it was a plastic restoration, but 1/2" of Bondo is too much for me. Same with rusted trunk sections. Yep, another might as well moment - Scott is taking it all the way down to the shell and it's off to media blasting on Tuesday via Scott's rotisserie. When it gets back, Scott has two 1/4 panels and two trunk drop offs. He's re-working the rusty frame rails for the reworked IRS cradle, so that's a non-issue.

Oh and the stainless works headers have the 02 bung on the wrong side. These headers were for the Wayne Due chassis, which is not made anymore (that I know of), so they get a pass... Scott will TIG bungs on the other side and we'll cap these.

So, the cadaver went off to find out what's hanging out under that red paint on Tuesday... was supposed to be done that day, but Scott's still waiting...

While that's off, he's been playing with some of the firewall mods. We bought a DSE panel and a wiper motor to move under the driver's fender. He also bought more body pucks to mount the rear IRS.

For some reason, the slave cylinder kit didn't line up, so Scott added a double capture bracket to allow some shifting. He also made a mount for the hydro boost that's going in, so we can stop reliably.

And he's got it back and back on it.

Needs both quarters, trunk drop offs and a brake light panel. There was a bit of small rust and some really bad repairs.

He also installed the DSE firewall panel and the DSE wiper motor over under the driver's side fender. The firewall should get cleaner, with random holes getting filled in, etc.

coolwelder62

I will get inside the car and strip out all the old crappy wiring ( just wanted to get back on the car after a week & half layoff of media blasting & eatin turkey). Get some panels fabricated to fill the hole's where the old owner run all the wiring from. I think every single wire had it's own hole. There's like 52 holes to cover or weld shut. Raingear doesn't make a kit for the 2nd gens. So we are using a DSE wiper kit supplied by B&B Classic's. Thank's Billy.

So, I recived a few PMs about the cage.

It's a stainless tiger cage done by Ride Tech. All 304 stainless, all tig welded. Some say they can do better, I love their products and engineering that goes into them. No paint needed.

Also, the reason we blasted: I knew there was shoddy body work under there. It was a 10' car. What is showing in bare metal is actually dangerous. New quarters, new trunk drop offs and a new rear valence all needed... the rear frame rails were junk too. Scott has his work cut out for him (pun intended) and will rebuild the rear rails to mount the IRS.

I love it when a plan comes together! (bonus points for the reference cite)...

Great build. You're not wasting any time.

I don't know what you were planning for a driveshaft, but give Frank a call at The Driveshaft Shop (http://www.driveshaftshop.com)

He has adapters that will convert the 3-prong 5th Gen Camaro pinion yoke and convert it over to a 108mm CV joint.

He also just came out with some CV joint slip yokes for various transmissions. Here is one that I got for my f-body T56:

http://www.pro-touring.com/~andrewb/cougar/103.jpg

http://www.pro-touring.com/~andrewb/cougar/102.jpg

They can also build you a double CV driveshaft (in either carbon or aluminum) which will completely eliminate all concerns regarding driveline angles. I've been running a single CV shaft in my GTO for a few years now and plan on doing a double CV shaft in my 1967 Cougar build.

Frank can also set you up with drive axles for the rear end.

Floors are solid and from what I can tell, original to the car. It's amazing for a New England car. Quarters could be patched, but it's better (IMHO) to go with new complete ones. Trunk drop offs and the rear tail light valence are junk. Scott says everything else is good to go.

Those parts are going to make such a nice build. It looks good and the subsframe's not even painted.

grendel
12-24-2014, 08:15 AM
Now that the sheet metal repair is mostly done (still a little TIG welding left) I can order the carbon fiber panels I need, inner and outer front fenders, maybe door skins (opinions?) a less visions intrusive hood, etc. I do want to stay with the non RS/Split bumper nose I have, as the full bumper is staying. Need opinions there. Most of the carbon fiber will be painted, may do SS stripes in clear.

Scott can also get back into the more fun stuff... like installing my front sub frame. It truly looks amazing, like it was built for the car. The headers fit very nicely, as does the trans/bell housing. Looks like the lowest point on the car (so far) will be the lower C7 a-arm. That includes the headers, which just needed a stainless o2 bung welded inside, as the one Stainless Works put on would interfere with the sub frame. Can't wait to see the v-bands TIG'd on to the true dual exhaust with a crossover pipe. Scott also has a new Z/28 there to see how they did the exhaust over the 5th gen IRS we're using.

I had a TR6060 built with a mid mount shifter. May end up going with a tail mounted shifter, as it lines up with the factory shifter hole. I did buy a gen4 Camaro console, as I thought it would clean up the floor nicely. It's supposed to fit the mid mount better on our cars. All sorts of interest there. If not, I have a line on a Gen 5 console, that may fit the tail mounted shifter better. Still juggling that.

grendel
12-24-2014, 08:21 AM
So it looks like I have to move my mid mount shifter. The gen4 console works great with the tail shifter position.

Scott will re-work the trans tunnel a little and create mounts for the center console. Can't wait to see all those holes filled. Someone was installing shifter boots by braille! Also looks like I can use a Lokar ebrake handle in the OEM gen iv position. Also can't wait to get rid of all the crappy wiring.

It also looks like I may help clear up a reputation issue on the board... I found a 1 gen Camaro sub frame of Scott's that needs love shown to it, installed into a 68 Camaro convertible I have here. May grab Wayne's SBC for that ;).

With the final body repair (except for doors and fenders, it's time to call Anvil) we can get onto more fun things.

Like chopping up a 2012 Camaro IRS to fit into a 73 Camaro. Scott will also have to fabricate a lot of the rear floor pan, hope I can use the 2006 GTO rear seat I bought.

I ordered a Rick's tank with Vaporworx and a CTSV twin fuel pump set up. It's very pretty and should provide this motor with all the fuel it needs.

Scott also got the front down on wheels with new metric lug nuts, and build rear stand offs to make it more moveable. I can't wait to see the flaming river stainless column, u-joints and intermediate shaft hanging through that saved firewall. Scott also makes brackets for the vintage air unit under the dash.

We've decided to re-drill the rear Camaro hubs, as they have a slightly different bolt pattern, but also use a meatier axle shaft than the Corvette hubs. Although I wonder if a later model Camaro (C6 or C7) uses the same spline count as the Camaro. I do have a set of C6 ZO6 rear hubs here, along with the entire rear suspension.

Can't wait to see the firewall supports, sub frame connectors and Ride Tech cage installed. Should be a very stiff chassis.

Blocks that got welded into the rockers and the place formerly known as rear frame rails. This gives a solid mounting point for the sub frame tie ins and the new rear frame rails that will need to be dissected to fit the IRS.

And we have a Vaporworx technology tank by Hector at Ricks... it's a bit big, since the IRS wants to live in the same space.

So, Hector sent a call tag and he will cut it down to fit, saving Scott some TIG work. That is what I call service.

Will still clear the exhaust that will route under the IRS and back up.

Scott's been working with DSE to narrow the track width a bit on the IRS. I bought all their control arms and sent them out to Scott, who cut an inch off each one. He's also building adjustable upper arms.

If this were a stock 5th Gen Camaro, at stock height, I'd be a little worried. Granted, we're a boat load lower, a 2nd Gen and do not need all the travel. I think we'll be in good shape.

He also did the TR6060 mods for the tunnel and 4th gen center console. We're working on the e-brake handle now. It will need a flat spot, under the center console slot and the cable passes through a hole later back, under the rug.

It's funny, I thought I stole the idea from LS1tech, but also found an install here. Stealing the pic from Woody - This is what it should look like: http://www.motortopia.com/files/141/album_paintjob/531cc28c8b88a/IMG_9022.jpg

Lots in the front will go away, same with the cup holders in the back. Or I add to the sides so it contours the floor. It's not hard to do. I'll take care of it when I get to do the ebrake mount and schtuff.

I'd agree, take some off the bottom in the rear, loose the cup holders, no need for level, just has too look "right" for the interior. I was going "consoleless", but really need one, my original is in pretty decent shape, but these 5th gen ones have too many creature comforts to pass up...so i'ma gonna go this route

I took the kids north for Skiing and came back to a bunch of pictures - some you may have already peeked at on Facebook ;).

As y'all know, Scott narrowed the DSE stuff I sent him, 2". He also cut the upper factory control arm 2". I plan to make a tubular arm when it comes back, already have a set of factory upper arms here to build a jig from. No sense to me having DSE tubular stuff and a cut and welded factory upper.

He's working with DSE on a sway bar now, if not a splined one will probably work with the sway bar links I bought from DSE - would probably give me more adjust-ability too. He's also working with Ride Tech to get the right shock, since the narrowed arms will need a shorter stroke.

It's now 62" WMS to WMS. Scott reports that a 12'' wheel with 8'' back spacing will fit well. I will roll the lips on the quarters that were installed. May also go with flares and wider stance... still have that bug in my head.

I now have to figure out what mods to do to the rear 2012 Camaro SS rotors I have. Also need to order axle shafts for the ZO6 splines.

I am really looking forward to getting this back to wrap up the final details and get my enclosed trailer back.

I am doing bulged fenders and a flare on my Firebird and we measured the other day and I am using a 19x10 wheel with about 5 inches of lip, so I think the backspace is a little under 5 with the pad. I can look back and confirm. We did mockup and are planning on going with 62 inches WMS for the rear end. Looks like Scott has to cut and weld the rear OEM sway bar.

Never done one myself, so I looked it up. Doesn't look that tough.

I thought a splined bar would work, but the exhaust and gas tank needs to live there.

Ultimatly, I'll end up with a bar narrowed by DSE... it will just take forever to get.

Got the custom tank from Hector at Rick's Tanks in. It's 2" shorter than his normal tank.

Scott also started on the stainless exhaust. I just ordered new mufflers and 4 180 degree bends for it. The Pypes ones won't work as well.

The exhaust will be a mix of 304 and 409 stainless now. I guess I will have it all coated to reduce heat and keep it looking the same.

It's a Flaming River column, supposedly for the Camaro, but did not have mounting brackets on it. The intermediate shaft is also by them, with the right couplers for the steering column: 1''x48 spline end that needed to be hammered on, going to 1" DD as the shaft has a slip joint bottom is 3/4 DD that has the custom Flaming River spline on the bottom to the rack and pinion.

It was originally pull me over red. When we obtained it, we had every color car under the sun.

Now everything's black.

And I think this thing would be wicked in deep black with carbon fiber accents.

So, candy apple red or deep black? Either will have carbon fiber accents, perhaps even including flares.

While I cut off the right quarter, wheel housing (including the DSE piece), repair the damage to the body from removing the filler panel between the rear window and trunk lid - I am sure there's more hiding.

Moving on.

We've kept on the engine build.

We did have to fabricate a front mounted crank sensor. The MagnumXL crank did not have provisions for a reluctor wheel... I bought it cheap. It also kicked off this entire destroked LS thought process.

Transmission's also ready to go. Also had all the exhaust ceramic coated.

Don't worry, will polish the fabricated valve covers :)

I am talking with Ride Tech (awesome guys) about the front coils/shocks. They have a solution to avoid contact.

The right rear quarters will be cut apart and put together right. Heck, I'll even brace it so the roof doesn't drop while the quarter's out. Novel concept. New quarter, wheel tub and DSE mini tub. They will be welded in place with the back window, trunk filler panel and trunk lid in place.

I talked with DSE (more awesome guys) about their rear links and bought the stuff to bring it back to their specs, which is 3" still narrower than factory. I can use their sway bar, which won't contact the coils. Scott cut their links, after talking with DSE, which DSE did not advise.

The upper rear coil over mounts will move to the inside of the frame, with more help from Ride Tech (Did I mention that Darren's awesome?) using the right shock ends.

I will tie the rear most IRS mount into the Tiger Cage. The rear IRS mount is currently a piece of tube welded through sheet metal.

We'll connect the round tube sub-frame connectors to IRS' front most mount (it's not all the way there).

I am hoping I can heat the bay bar and roll it to fit flush on the frame, after I cut off the flange and weld on a new one.

As for Scott keeping my money for my engine/trans/sub frame he sold, that's between him, God and the law.

So, all in all, not a complete re-start, but probably 100 hours of work and more parts.

Thanks. I'd prefer to let it all die. The cards will fall where they will, with the law.

We're doing it. I own a shop that does auto restoration. Granted, we do mostly classic Porsche, Ferrari and Lamborghini but make an exception now and then. My father started it in 1968. We have cars with every major collector out there.

The pic on the lift is at my shop, with Roger my shop foremen.

You can see a lot of my shop in my shop truck thread. We have interior (clean) bays, 4 down draft paint booths with heat, etc.

I took it to two other shops for the estimates, just to document everything.

I've finally learned, there are few people that will do it right. I am one and I have a few of those folks in my employ. They just don't do Camaros that handle, accelerate or brake. :Tomcat: Looks like I have to dip my fingers into that market, or at least my car.
