I did a quick intro on the car, but wanted to start a project thread to give me a place to keep up with this one.
I'll update here

Well, some changes were made as this build SLOWLY progressed, so I thought I’d throw them in here.
I moved away from the EEC 4 EFI because it was such a space hog and went with the Holley Sniper EFI and all the related electronics. I also went with Dakota Digital gauges, Doug Thorley headers, and a BUNCH of Lokar pieces. And a new gas cap (because I hated the idea of filling the car in the trunk). https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190422/128a1f6c7ca8e97b432d141af69f9dab.jpg

I also decided on what wheels I wanted...& would fit in those tiny rear wheel wells. American Racing VN527’s in 17x7” and 235/45r17’s.

Bought the car from a 'friend of a friend' early October '16. After a successful 800+ mile drive from Texas back to Alabama without a hitch, I managed to grenade the motor on a short drive with my wife. Not really sure what happened except that the crankshaft is absolutely broken. So I'm about to build myself a restomod.
Background on the car... I bought from a friend of a friend who has owned the car since the mid 90's. It was his mothers before that. He upgraded quite a bit of the car over the 20+ years. 306 HO motor (carbureted) and with AODe with 4r70w guts and an 8.8 Explorer 31 spline rearend that is narrowed to fit properly. A few pieces of 65 mustang front suspension with 10" power disc brakes out front with all new pieces and parts. It has Global West tubular control arms, subframe connectors and tubular 'traction bars' with a tiny pair of front & rear swaybars.
After the motor gave up the ghost, I started looking into what I wanted to do next. I really wanted to go with the new 2.3L turbo setup in the '15 up Mustangs but that turned out to be entirely to pricey for me :(. So, I decided to go a route I'm very familiar with. 302 HO based EFI setup with a mild bit of upgrading.
I ended up buying a 349 cubic inch shortblock (4.040" bore, 3.400 stroke crank & 5.4" rods), adding a trickflow hyd roller setup, trickflow Street heat EFI intake and aluminum heads. I bought a Ron Francis Cobra EFI harness off of Craigslist (new) and rounded up a ton of related parts (EFI gas tank, plumbing etc). I also decided to completely rewire the car as the stock wiring was showing the signs of being 50+ years old.
've had quite a few Fox mustangs but always wanted an older muscle car that wasn't one of the normal candidates. The Falcon filled that bill...& my mother had a 63 Falcon for her first car, so it just seemed like kismet. So here we go...

Welcome from another guy sweating over a Falcon. I wish you the best of luck in emptying those boxes of parts in the near future; I've gotten a few myself lately, and they've done little more than establish more guilt and stress . . .
Aren't you in Alabama or somewhere thereabouts? Have you any intent for changing the "Porsche Experience" at Barber Motorsports Park?:G-Dub:

It’s been a LONG time since I’ve posted here, but I have been moving forward. I haven’t gotten a lot done to the car, but it’s because I finally got the chance to build a small Home shop and that’s been taking up all my time. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180506/f5bb54511771da989f3403fe34b64f77.jpg

I’ve got the Falcoon moved into the shop and I’ve been doing some work. I’ve gotten the new Tanks inc. EFI tank installed and ran the new 3/8” stainless steel hard lines ran up to the passenger side firewall.
I also ended up changing to a different intake to give myself the needed clearance for the brake booster. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180506/a9b6a6a341708d23840ed1f927674d80.jpg

It’s an eBay special. Typhoon. I did some port work on the lower and the throttle body opening. Rumor is that it’ll make good power & with my current build, it should make great low end/midrange power. I figure this iteration of the car only needs good power for fun drivin’!
I’m planning on either an Art Morrison or Roadster Shop full chassis for the next iteration, along with another motor choice...probably LS or maybe an ecotec

Well, I’m getting even closer! I got the Lokar gas pedal assembly and brake pedal cover, shifter (this was a PITA due to the AOD & small tunnel), throttle & kickdown cables, Sniper throttle brackets all installed. Lokar should LOVE me!
I also finalized all the power & grounds. Put in the oe Monte Carlo bar, put on the grille and head light bezels...& THE HOOD ON!!!
Then...I drove it! Only about an 1/8th of a mile, because it’s still open header...& it is LOUD. But I drove it! First time in 2-1/2 years. I’m going to take it to the exhaust shop this week so I can tune the Sniper, confirm the TV cable is correct and check all the small stuff. Then I’ll start putting the interior back in it.
Here it is back together... I dig the LED headlights...

I really dig the Falcon a lot because you just don’t see many of them.
And I’m kinda fanatical about squares...I’ve had a dozen or so. I also have several 67-68 C10’s too.
I bought this blue one to sell...probably, as it’s damn near perfect considering it’s age. 1987 R10 swb with fresh 350 tbi, 700r4, power everything (everything for ‘87) and A/C...and it all seems to work well. I drove 160 miles home from sellers house in Georgia without a hiccup.

So now I’m getting back to the Falcon. While working on the Chevy, https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191006/f835584446badf701a29b773f785b566.jpgI did get an ‘01 V6 4r70w, had it rebuilt, ordered a PTC 10” convertor and the US Shift Quick 4 controller & harness, and the Lokar shift shaft.
I’ll have to have the aluminum driveshaft shortened 1” related to 7/8” longer transmission housing. I did have to offset the crossmember mounts rearward 1” and ‘modify’ the trans tunnel to clear the larger bellhousing of the 4r70w vs the AOD. I’ve had the trans in & out 3 times to get fitment worked out.
Once the new parts arrive, I’ll get the shift shaft swapped out and in it will go. PTC says 2-3 weeks on the convertor, so I’m going to get to work on the interior work.
Just a gratuitous shot of the Chevy.

Not up to date on the blue oval stuff.... Is the 4r70w an updated/improved version of the AOD? Or diff trans altogether?

It’s an electronically controlled tranny. Kind of an AOD on steroids. Think, 4L80e vs a 700r4.

I got the PTC convertor today. I also received the US Shift Quick 4 controller this week.
But, I’m still waiting on the Lokar shift shaft, so I’m stuck on hold until it gets here. I have to have it so I can get it installed before I’ll be able to install the transmission. I ordered it well before I got the other stuff... AGGRAVATING.

Glad you're still making progress on the Falcon. You did great work on the trucks. I feel you on the automotive ADHD. I have trouble deciding to work on the TA or a BMW I bought. Good luck moving forward with whatever you're working on.

Thanks Man!!!
On another note... Made a list of parts and jobs I still need to work on to make the Falcon done’ish once I get the transmission installed. So, I Ordered Redline ATF, an external trans cooler, trans pan with a drain plug (I hate pulling a pan full of fluid).
I also test fitted the transmission controller harness and started investigating how hard the new front seat covers are going to be to install. I figured out really quickly that my original seat foams are HAMMERED, so I ordered new ones from Distinctive and called my buddy who does interior work. I’ll be taking these to him next weekend, as these look to be quite a PITA.
If the stars align, I may have the Falcon ready for Tail of the Dragon in November.

Well, I got the new Lokar shift shaft installed, the convertor in and seated appropriately, and wiggled, jiggled and quite a bit of cussing.... But, the transmission is IN! Did a few test & trial fits of the exhaust, shift linkage vs cable (I’ll be using the cable style linkage this time), and installed the driveshaft. The driveshaft length is spot on, but I didn’t realize that the slip yoke was different between the AOD & the 4r70w, so looks like I’ll be replacing the slip yoke. One step forward and two steps back...again. [emoji13]

No pictures, but I’m theoretically done under the car as far as the transmission install.
-Shifter linkage in...check
-Torque converter...check
-Trans controller wiring...done under the car
-Starter & wiring...check
-Trans dipstick...check
-Driveshaft yoke swap...check
-driveshaft installed...check
-H-pipe install...check
I gotta put some trans fluid in, and get the controller wiring inside the car done. Then... I HOPE LIKE CRAZY It'll move under its own power. Hopefully that’ll happen tomorrow.

Drove IT!!! Lots still to do, but it drives pretty dang good. Well, except that I don’t have the seats so I’m sitting on a box, so the 1-2 & 2-3 shifts really tried to put me in the trunk. I’ll start on getting the interior in next.

I didn’t get nearly as much done to the Falcon as I’d hoped this weekend. The wife & I ran away to North Carolina to do an event with a group of friends. So we spent all weekend running the mountain roads between Fontana NC & Robbins TN. Tail of the Dragon was a BLAST in my little Miata Club.

We had a beautiful day here in the typically humid south, so my wife & I finally took the Falcoon out for some break-in miles. Just shy of 100 miles today without any real issues. I noticed a small harmonic vibration in the front end and the rear passenger-side tire rubbed once. Once I got it home & up on the lift, I figured out that the p/s front bearings were a touch loose and the p/s rear inner fender lip had a high spot that I’d missed when rolling them. All fixed & no leaks were apparent! Whoop whoop!

Your Falcon looks great, man. Two tips: One is that the bucket is only worse (functionally) than stock seats because there is no back; it is grippier when in a hard turn. In the future, one of the best helpers for rear tires rubbing under turning stress is a Maier panhard rod (for Mustang, but it fits); it is a miracle for the leaf-sprung rear . . .

So long as you can grind and weld a bit, it should work decently with the 8 or 9-inch rear. The design has changed a bit since I put one on an old version of my Falcon in 2011 or so, but the frame rail dimensions are the same . . .
I couldn't find any head-on pictures on my presently available laptop (in hotel right now), but the pic here shows the frame underneath the car.

Hey Craig, Yes, it still has the 2” leaf springs. I beat on Mike trying to get him to build me a new pair. :D. Mine currently has some “Cal-Tec” style traction bars and a wonky looking 1/2” swaybar and some coil’ish over style shocks on it. I ordered the panhard bar, new bilstein shocks and some 1” drop blocks...after talking with Mike again tonight.
I’ll be losing the wonky shocks & swaybar after a long discussion that was way over my head about inside tire load “tech stuff, tech stuff, tech stuff”. He has nothing but great stuff to say about you.

Good for you, dude. You're jumping into the deep end now . . . You will be stunned at what those parts will do to the way your car reacts to steering and cornering inputs. The only negative is that you may find yourself clamoring to make the front (steering/handling qualities) catch up. Mike and Craig are authorities, so you're getting the best advice!

Yeah, that’s what I’m afraid of [emoji1787]. I already have a 2016 GT350 and a 2016 Miata Club (with a pic of the latest family member) for all that. The Falcoon is meant to be a cruiser...time will tell.

I started the install of the Maier Panhard bar setup today. I got all the stuff that was under there out and did a test fit of the mount. Looks like it’s actually going to clear my current tail pipe layout which is awesome. I’m installing a girdle style differential cover that I’ve had for quite some time then I can be sure the bar is going to clear the cover too.

That's a lot of cool stuff--it's not even a holiday yet! I do remember how quickly the tire rubbing issues on the Falcon can prompt one to act, however; the panhard was excellent for setting a final tire size. My final wheel and tire size with the panhard/stick axle setup was a 15x8 and a 225-45 (Hankook RS3). I had zero rub with decent articulation, but it took some metal removal from the inner fender.
Have you had the opportunity to try the GT 350 out at Barber Motorsports Park?

I’ve got a 17x7” wheel with a 225/40r17 on it and they fit fine except when cornering and then they rubbed slightly. I rolled the inner fender lip pretty dramatically though.
I haven’t had the chance to take the GT350 out on Barber’s yet, but a ride in a GT350R around Barber’s is what convinced me to buy the car. The R is sweet, but I am scared of the carbon wheels...& the additional cost [emoji23].

I'm going to have to do a narrower rearend which means... If I do it, I'm going to go ahead and minitub it too. Then I can run a 9" wheel out back with plenty of room. I'm just gonna stay with the halibrand style wheel for now. The Fikse wheels need radder brakes, suspension and purty paint. That'll be the next iteration.

They don’t “need”, but I’d prefer. The 10” front discs and rear drums hide well behind these wheels but would be very noticeable. My excuse anyway :D
The passenger side rubs on right hand corners. Turn the panhard bar 1/2 turn the other way and the drivers side rubs. I’ve already ‘finessed’ the inner fenders and lips as much as I feel comfortable doing.

Sometimes, progress just needs to be measured in millimeters . . .
Another part of the equation that can help, while still avoiding some of the binding with the leaf spring setup is going to heavy-duty shackles with poly or Del-Alum bushings. Some say to leave the fronts rubber and stiffen the rears, while others say to put solid bushings in front and leave the shackle bushings rubber. I put poly in the fronts and rears, and it did seem to help just a bit more; I didn't notice binding on street or track. The heavy shackles with poly bushings, many years ago, were only about 40 bucks.
That said, at some point, I said "f-it" and just whacked the inner fenders with an angle grinder (far simpler solution than narrowing axle and mini-tubbing). No more contact happened after that. Still, the car was destined to be a Corvette anyway . . .
I drove the Falcoon up to my friend Sherman's today. Just shy of 70 miles round trip and it was awesome. Frickin’ tires still skkkiiirrrkkkk every once in a while. I hate that sh1t.

I took the 1” drop blocks out and no more rubbing. I’ll revisit this in the future, but for now it’s good. Now I’m going to spend some time getting Walter running & driving.
Walter is my one owner (previous to me) 1968 C10 SWB 2wd. I’ve got a complete PorterBuilt touring dropmember’ed chassis with accuair. He’ll be powered by a mild’ish EFI 468 with a built 700r4, 3.42/Eaton equipped 12 bolt. And 14” 6-piston front and 13” 4-piston rear Wilwood brakes will handle the slowing down portion. Dakota Digital gauges, painless wiring harness, etc for the inside. And, He will keep his patina.

After several hundred miles, I know I need more tire out back. So, I’m going to try the Detroit Speed mini tub kit for a 64-1/2 to 70 Mustang. I also decided to move forward on fitting the fikse FM10’s and ordered new inner barrels for the future fronts to make them into 8”

I used to listen to the tank popping in and out in the summer while the car baked in the garage; it sounded kind of like somebody giving the quarter panel a good slap. I've got about the most convoluted tank ventilation system now, but it works. The main thing was getting a -8 rollover valve in the top of my tank, then giving the vapors a sufficient landing place; we had some good discussion about what works with Sean's Volvo project. A modern fueling system makes this problem way worse . . .

After driving the car some more this weekend & my wife driving it...her immediate response after driving it was, “its fast, handled good, but the brakes stink...fix them”. So, I ordered 13” 6-piston Wilwoods, 7/8” booster, proportioning valve etc today.

Finally got the Wilwood brake kit, master cylinder, proportioning valve, etc. started on a dry fit on the brake kit and the inner bearings are the wrong I.D. Spoke to a ‘tech’ guy from Wilwood and now feel dumber [emoji15]
I think I’ve figured out how to fix it though.
Gotta admit that the new brakes should certainly work better! 12.88” rotor & 6-piston caliper vs. 10” Rotors and a 1-piston caliper. [emoji1787]

Nice job surfing that slippery slope! As I recall, the "bolt-on" items usually always fit perfectly, with no additional effort required. There's that and a history of Wilwood bolt-on kits pushing the hub faces out about 3/8 of an inch or so, which is of course always a problem when wheel space is so limited. Did this happen with yours?

The previous disc brake ‘kit’ was a hodge podge of jankey parts. But I finally debugged the swindles and such so I could move forward on the Wilwood brakes.

Had the previously mentioned brake kit not been such a POS, I would have been done with the Wilwood install in just a few hours. The Wilwood kit does widen the track with by 0.25” per side, but the other kit was doing this too. So really it’s a wash. The current wheel/tire combo seems to work fine.

After driving it some over the last couple of weeks (~130 miles), I have diagnosed a ****ty handlin’, great braking car. So, I am going to be upgrading the front suspension some more. Global West lower control arms and strut rods are now ordered. I have a few upgrades up front already, so I think these pieces will be a significant upgrade.

I had these same parts, once upon a time. The greatest effect seemed to be a big reduction in the standard cowl shake over expansion joints, and maybe a bit of caster addition. After that, and it may have been partly due to the fact that my last house was on a gravel road (very dusty--not much rain), the spherical bearings were not long for the world.
Overall, it's the geometry that will affect handling the most. These parts only affect geometry if you use the lower arms to add some caster, which can be quite an upgrade. Otherwise, car don't care what them arms be made of.

I know there’s not a lot of ‘difference’ in the design/dimensions.
The strut rods didn’t come yet, but I had a hammered ball joint so I had to install the lower arms. But now that the lower arms are in, it’s obvious that the previous alignment is no longer even close which tells me that more was amuck. I’m not expecting anything overly incredible, but the stock lowers were worn out & I wanna go 100+ mph on occasion. So...done did. :)
But!!! I really want to sell this one, buy a 1st Gen 4-door wagon and do a full chassis (Roadster or Morrison) with an LS SWAP. Just my thoughts.
