The hood is one that we were racking our brains on. The customer had to have the shot gun style, forward facing Firebird scoops because he had a 75 Firebird in high school. The car came in with the Firebird scoops and the T/A shaker hood scoop. It was the first time we had seen that done before... The car had a 502 in it and the entire carb was through the hood with the stock GM intake and a small air cleaner on top of it. That was the reason for the shaker hood. The new build has a 572 with a higher intake, nitrous plate kit, and needs a sizable air cleaner on top of it. So, we are dealing with 15 lbs in a 5 lb bag! Having the forward facing scoops really makes the rest of the hood complicated since it needs to be raised about 6 inches in the center to clear the carb. We will see how things progress once we get into it!

Any updates on this? I'd love to see how this one is coming along. the interior design is absolutely killer.

By the way, where or who does your interior work? Is it all done in house, or do you farm any of it out? I'm curious about the upholstery and sticking in particular. Regardless...absolutely killer work!

Thanks! All the design and fab work is done by ourselves, we usually use one of about seven different shops depending on the project, scheduling etc.

Some more updates:
The 'bird is going steady with lots of work cleaning up the underhood appearance, full exhaust system and door handle removal.

And a couple more updates on a couple of the less 'pro-touring' based projects we have going:

Some fresh metalwork on the custom custom Cadillac we introduced earlier in the thread. The previous work done could only really be described as 'disposable':

That underhood panel is a nice piece.

RS-Chris 01-10-2013 08:56 AM

We are also doing a bit of a freshen up on Jim's '33 Tracknose.
Some of you may have seen it before: http://www.roadstershop.com/complete...mpleted-photos

The plan is to do a tonneau style top, new windshield and a few more 'tweaks'.
This means removal of the old windshield, posts, cowl recess and filling the tops of the doors.

The original windshield look:

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8235/8...9de42858_b.jpg

A couple of rough ideas for the direction:

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8366/8...03cb8a4e_b.jpg

Removing and filling:

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8327/8...9e458960_b.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8230/8...6dbdd703_b.jpg

And mock up of the profile:

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8360/8...7a719ac5_b.jpg

Also some work on the steering arm. Thought I'd throw these in as the car isn't seen often without the nose and hood!

The Tracknose was at San Diego Wheels and Waves last year when I went down --- I crawled all over that car. Just super impressive!

I'm glad he is re-doing the windshield. The new design fits the style better.

Thanks Greg. I still love looking at all the details in this car. There was a ton of stuff that went into the suspension and under hood work that you really couldn;t see once the nose went on. And that still has to be one of the best looking motors that we have ever done. Getting rid of all the accessories on the front of the motor jsut gave it a bitchen, clean look.

There was always a limit on what could be done to the car because of the convertible top and side windows needed to seal up to the windshield. After driving the car for a year, the owner said that he had only put the top up once and never rolled the windows up. So, he decided to get rid of them and finish the car off the way he had always envisioned it. Everything else on the car was built as a period inspired dry lakes race car. The new custom duval style windshield will give the car the look it deserved originally.

what about the top ? is it going to fit the windsheld ?

The top is gone now. It will be replaced with a fasten-on type tonneau cover.

NOPANTS68 01-10-2013 09:25 AM

Injected nailhead- so sweet. Incredible welds on those small parts. Great job with the packaging on that car. Small platforms like that take tons of planning and thought. Awesome.

waynieZ 01-10-2013 09:40 AM

As always beautiful work. I love the engine bay on all of these cars.

RS-Chris 01-10-2013 09:43 AM

It's turning into a mega update!!

A few details on one of the Speed 33 projects:
Along with our Speed33 chassis, we created the hood sides, hood, curved louvers, sectioned grille and and will be making few detail pieces on the interior and exterior like the dash and tail panel.

Twin LS motors in the Bugatti? More details please!

Darren

WSSix 01-10-2013 12:48 PM

Giant red thing? Looks like a welding/spark screen. Don't tell me you guys make custom versions of those too.

That Bugatti chassis is a work of art!

INTMD8 01-10-2013 01:09 PM

That Bugatti chassis is gorgeous! What was behind the decision to internally reinforce the rails?

kennyd 01-10-2013 02:22 PM

amazing ! i do know of a caddy being built with a twin northstar engine like that .

Sandbagger 01-10-2013 02:34 PM

If you guys didnt post up the pics ...I wouldnt beleive it .

INTMD8 01-10-2013 04:48 PM

HAHA, thought so, just checking.

I suppose if you don't have the room to increase overall frame rail height/width that internal gusseting has to add a lot of strength.

It's quite the conversation piece!
We dont really know a whole lot about it from a technical standpoint. We do know that it was one of two engines originally designed for offshore powerboat application. Essentially 2 LS motors joined together with custom block. It has been 'de-tuned' from the 2000hp range to a more mild 1000-ish Hp. I suppose if you are building something like a Bugatti, one V8 may be adequate but 2 V8's are better!

RS-Chris 02-27-2013 08:35 AM

Some more updates of the other projects we have going on (that we can show you :_paranoid)

Back on the '63 Cadillac and work continues on the 'deco' style Firewall.
The owner is debating whether or not he wants the ribs chromed or painted with the firewall so we figured it might be a good option to machine them from brass as separate pieces.

Attention also turns to sorting out the structure of the front, grille and sheetmetal and improving what was there (i.e. a mess)

We will also be working our way through the the sheetmetal, improving where possible (see left fender)

RS-Chris 02-27-2013 09:12 AM
