I'm going to have to watch this thread with corrective lenses.

WSSix 06-09-2014 06:51 PM

Why? Can't see $hit?

57hemicuda 06-10-2014 03:07 AM

Well, I can't see $hit, but the corrective lenses are a metaphor. Keep watching.

WSSix 06-10-2014 05:10 AM

lol, ok. I'll keep my eyes open and be patient. Thanks, Ron.

GregWeld 06-10-2014 06:33 AM

I've been watching this thread.... with my glasses on... but I fell asleep waiting for an update - so the corrective lenses didn't help me since my eyes were closed.

:warning: :bang:

Track Junky 06-10-2014 06:57 AM

I heard 70 Camaro front end will work with the 110" wheel base

Payton King 06-11-2014 06:37 AM

Trying to let this thread (and my project) die and it keeps popping up.

I see my Bitches are on here stirring the pot. LOL

Lots and lots of corrections coming to a completely jacked up job by Jake. It will be months just fixing the car to the point I can actually make some progress, which will all be posted here in painful detail.

I'm sorry to hear that happened to you Payton. :(

GregWeld 06-11-2014 07:42 AM

You get Jake to fix his mistake?

WSSix 06-11-2014 08:30 AM

Ouch! Sorry Payton. I hope it gets fixed more easily than you're expecting.

Jr 06-11-2014 11:15 AM

Payton,

That sucks. I'll be watching the thread... I'm curious how you found the errors.

Payton King 06-11-2014 11:26 AM

With a tape measure.

Vince@Meanstreets 06-11-2014 11:43 AM

Is it interfering with sheet metal? Might be ok, it will give you more room for increased caster.

A big one?

Jr 06-11-2014 12:09 PM

Oh... This sucks.

Payton King 06-11-2014 01:09 PM

It has 7 degrees of caster now, it would have to have 60 degrees to get the wheel base to 108 inches.

Matt@BOS 06-11-2014 01:31 PM

Holy hell! So the front suspension is an inch or so forward? I remember Ron/Dave/Rob being concerned about the ride height being 4x4ish, but it sounds like you've go a bunch of other issues that are worse.

Payton King 06-11-2014 01:52 PM

My car has 110 inch wheel base, the extra 2 inches are from the firewall forward. Rear is in correct spot. The front will have to be cut off and moved back 2 inches. Probably up 2 inches as well to correct some geometry problems.

Sadly it's a long list.

ok, well that changes things. I surprised he didn't build it with a mock up body so he could center everything.

57hemicuda 06-11-2014 04:08 PM

Well if it was 108", he wouldn't have needed a mock up body. LOL

Matt@BOS 06-11-2014 07:20 PM

I don't get how this happens. I've seen sub frames from one manufacturer go through the shop where the lower control arms were all off a half inch, or so, but building a 110" wheel base? :headscratch:

Jr 06-11-2014 09:50 PM

Sucks that jake made a huge mistake. Holohan can fix that.

Next time, I had more than $20 dollars and I was poppin' tags.

Lots of used NASCAR and circle track re-sellers in the area. He is just one of many. Next time I go up to Roush /Yates I will get some photos. Imagine a Home Depot, but with race parts filling the shelves. Motors on pallets stack in the shelves, entire car on one isle. It is crazy.

As soon as I figure out how to do the questions in quotes it will be easier to answer specific questions. Before I started the build, I was going to get a Howe road race front clip and run the 5x5 hubs and all the circle stuff.

Tough to be creative with a name for a project when I am not creative enough to do something other than a Camaro. It is a little goofy to name you car or project anyway, but how else do you keep your seperate from the others? "I am the guy doing the 1st gen Camaro on the site." Yea, that narrows me down to about 1000 projects. LOL

Somebody asked about NASCAR brakes. Kind of...using an AP calliper used in circle track with a lug mount on a floater with a Grand National hub in the rear. I will post up some pics later on that one.

The yellow car was on the Cover of Camaro Performers and had an 8 page spread. April of 2009 (Thank you Mr. Rupp!)

As far as paint, you may be looking at it. Going to replace the roof so it will be in primer, may leave the rest of the car as is until I get it sorted. It will be a wide body, but may cut out the fenders and quarter dirt track style for a season.

This is my inspiration photo/drawing

http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...onking/DTM.jpg

I retract that previous comment..... a set of fenders whould have helped spot the problem sooner.

Well, if its at Holohan's...he can stretch the front end and add some ducting.

Payton King 06-12-2014 06:19 AM

It is actually at Jim Pettigrew's. Been a frabricator in NASCAR for 30+ years and is currently working at Hendrick.

The only thing that I can figure is Jake was building a car for Mulvey, he built Mulvey's car 110 inches because he was going to run Maxton Mile and someother high speed events. He must have forgotten and did not change the jig. That is not an excuse for him, he is still a dumb ass. How do you build a full frame car and not check wheel base? I am guessing he knew what he did and decided to send the car on to me instead of correcting.

Payton King 06-12-2014 06:23 AM

Here it is at Pettigrews

http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1j3yhy7o.jpg

If any of you remember, I ran a 21st Century front clip on my yellow car and Rupp had one in Bad Penny. That is the jig for it on the left

Very nice, those guys are metal masters.

Well he did screw it up but I think you should roll with it. A longer wheel base isnt gonna kill you. Turn it into an advantage. just my 2 sense. yep, that was a pun.
Switch that labor to fix the frame and put it into custom front sheet metal work.

Flash68 06-12-2014 10:22 AM

Interesting A pillar cage bar location so far inward. :headscratch:

How are you supposed to fix this? Not much meat left after you move the flare forward enough to compensate for the problem. Payton said it would look funny (or maybe it was an expletive) and I agree.

Vince@Meanstreets 06-12-2014 10:40 AM

Add to the rear of the fender to move the wheel opening forward or better yet, increase its size by 1/2-3/4".

Remove the tulips extend the cowl and mount the masters under the dash.

With the extra room you can now move the engine back farther and you could 1 piece the hood and 1/2 cowl vent cover.

Now you have room for under hood heat extraction, oil tanks, multiple coolers and electronics.

Payton King 06-12-2014 11:41 AM

Yea, I have thought about all of that stuff...going to move the clip back and keep the wheel base where it should be. Fender are going to be custom regardless of the wheel base.

Going cut out cage from main hoop forward and put it where it should be, not in my line of sight. Down bars are out too far and come in contact with front tires and the kicker bar keeps me from mounting my pedal box. Funny as I sent my pedal box to him before he started the frame, much less the cage, for him to mount.

Vince@Meanstreets 06-12-2014 11:59 AM

that sucks but you'll get it right. That's the problem being so far away from your project.

Payton King 06-12-2014 12:04 PM

I wish that was all of the problems, still more to come I have not posted about.

You are right, project was too far away. Now it is about 15 minutes from my house.

I am truly sorry to hear this Payton. I hope Jake steps up and helps cover the repair cost. That was Amateur hour!

Greg from Aus 06-12-2014 01:54 PM

That just plain sucks, I hope it all works out Payton.
