So, this is the fight... all this stuff, trying to live in the same place, without damage. I think we nailed it. The IRS went in for it's final fitting.
So, this happened today: As they were installed, the rims hit the coil overs. No rim I had or bought at specification would fit. So, in the hot rodding fashion, we broke out the plasma cutter and welder and made them fit. Cut off the mounts for the upper rear coil overs and cut part of the "frame rail". Mounted the coil over under the frame rail, but with the mount cut into it. Flipped the shocks 180 degrees so the hardware's inside and easier to route into the trunk. That all allowed this the "steam roller" affect. I mean, if I have to re-engineer, might as well go big as we rebuild. :) I am also pleased as punch with the Bear calipers on Kore3 abutments over Camaro 14.4" rotors, Camaro hubs with parking brake... seems we need to shim just a little bit, but the front calipers match the back now. Yes, the remote resevoirs will go into the trunk. |

Wish I would have known you were making offset shock mounts. I would have had you make me a set. Need to get you shock specs also when you have time if you don't mind. |

The rear rails will be totally clean before paint, BTW... this is final rough in. That's a 375 tire tucked under there. Also, someone posted a link about getting more room in the outer wheel tub of a 2nd gen... I can't find it. |
First rule of hot rodding --- ya gotta cut, to cure.... LOL
Nicely done! And wow! Those are so big ass tires. |
I just hit my LIKE button so hard, I broke it!

I think they may look too big... won't know until I can sit it all the way down. These may end up on my Z06, with the Z06/7 rims and tires going on this. |
Looking good, JJ. I love the 5th Gen Camaro IRS in this car and the wide body in the rear. This is a cool car that is finally turning out well now that it has the proper supervision. :)
I'm excited to see what is next. |
I am pretty sure a 47 Willy's wagon, on C7 suspension's next...
Or maybe a 72 Corvette "Z06"???? |
Planning to bring the frame home in a couple weeks. Needed to redo my garage so I could have a place to put it and still park both Camaro's in the garage.
As for the 375 that's a big SOB Quote:

47 Willy's is a sweet little wagon.

So I am still noodling on this, which means no forward progress.
As you can see, the 21" rims and 375 series tires fit. Thing is, I have 1.5" of up travel the way they fit now. I'd really like a lower ride height with them, even with the 1.5" of travel. Perhaps I should ask, what is a reasonable up travel amount for racing/street riding for ice cream with the kids? Most cars I've built, I shoot for 2.5". I think I can squeak out 2" with this. I read somewhere (but can't find it) about how to mod the stock outer wheel tubs for more up travel. Or I can I go with an 18" rim and run BFG's. I'd have to buy 4 rims and tires. That gives me 2.5" up. Or I could go with Z06 rear rims all around... I have two 20x12's and two tires... I also have the front 19x11" and tires. Again, 2.5" up. Or I could do 19x12" rims from the rear of a 2012 C6 Grand Concourse. I have 4 of those, just need tires. again, 2.5" up. Gives me a 26.5" diameter tire on a 12" wide rim In which case, I am being lazy... but they're probably a better tire than the Pirelli Nero's I own on the 21 and 20" Forgelines that coould go on my Z06 or other projects. I haven't even started to really think about the front, most say an 11" wide rim, which matches the front 2015 Z06 rims I own. Thoughts? |
So, in other news, Ron Sutton will be helping with this build via specifications.
I think that answers some of the questions above. |
With Ron on board you'll get everything worked out and this thing running like a serious beastie. Good luck!

Looking really good Grendel. it's progressed a lot since I saw it. I'm glad you're finishing it. It's going to be sick just like your other builds. I hope to see it before the cold weather comes back.

Some Wheel designs I think that would look killer. :hello:
|
So, yeah... the 21" and 20" rim combo is gone.
Order BFG Rival S's today. Trying to go square on 335's but we'll see. I know a 315 will fit the front. |

Got a little time to dink around with this.
One of the things that really bugged me: The rear shelf was cut excessively large for the DSE mini tubs, and never patched. Generally, it's not an issue for most cars, but in mine, that's where the Tiger Cage bolts through... which would be a major issue. In the cut pics, the large square shape is the stainless Ride Tech backing plate to the rear cage section. I imagine it's designed to be covered.:y0!: This is how I got it last year. Finally got some time this week to play with it for an hour. So cut it out more and added material that is welded to the wheel tub, the rear deck and the "frame". I feel that tying this into the cage system by Ride Tech will add a bunch of rigidity. I'll spend some time with the grinder and clean the welded up, then drill for the cage bolts... I can't imagine it's going anywhere now. I also took the vent system out, it will get a charcoal canister on the gas tank vent. Some pics for you. |

One of the other things that bugged me was how the gas tank was mounted with two 3/16" thick bolts in the front of the gas tank straps through some pretty thin material. That 16.5 gallons at 6.3 lb per gallon hanging off what looks like 20 or 22 gauge sheet metal.
So I welded in some 14g that will get braced to each other. Now the sloshing can do whatever it wants. They will also take 3/8" bolts like the adjuster is on the other side. Also, since we're changing up a the car, I am thinking about dropping the stripes... I've seen a couple of cars with carbon fiber stripes and I am not a fan. I also asked Ben to add the 18" Budniks Jay last posted to see what they look like on the car. The 20/21" Forgelines are not a part of this and will be sold off. Thoughts? |

After the last couple of day's work, I think I should call this project "Tacky".
Got the inner fenders fitted, just a bit more welding and grinding to go... lots of black booger picking too! Getting ready to paint and line the underside so we can start making this into a final roller. Gained .75" of up travel over the way it was done before. Also has the outer lip for the 1/4 to attach to. Also trimmed the wheel tubs themselves, so they don't trap crap and cause rot. Oh and we have new tires, will get those measured for rims once it's a roller. Rims are ordered, too. This thing may actually race this season! |
Nice rendering and some serious meats your gonna run.
|
You're getting there! Maybe we can race together in the future!

I would like that... should be a fun race :)
I am slowly chipping away at this. I know people won't see it, but I will know they're there... so I finished the rear inner fender wells. Yes, I even put down some plastic. It's tough splitting time between this and the Diamond <T>. |

Is this thing on?
After a lot of grinding and black booger picking, I got the body lines where I want them. Although I really didn't want to use any filler, we had to. Granted, it's less than 1/16" thick. I have the passenger side in a guide coat and started working on the driver's side mud work. Looks like I may make it to a race or two this year with this car. Oh, also getting perfect gaps means modifying carbon fiber. |
Would love to see this thing done this year!! :superhack:

More priming, more sanding... glad we're working in the dirty section of the building. I got the trunk lid gapped right. Start working on the doors sometime next week.
It's getting the underside pol lined tonight and tomorrow we're making it a roller and measuring for wheels. Today was a good day. |
Sweet!

Sub frames went in for the final time.
Also getting my second race boat ready... some times it's nice to live near the ocean. |
