This build is so badass.

andreb 01-31-2014 07:58 AM

Any updates on this awesome build?

LS1MonteSS 02-05-2014 12:29 PM

I hope Jim is doing ok??..

I was following this for a long time but I haven't seen much going on.

This single project has helped me so much in the planning for my 05 GTO project. I know getting things exactly as you have them pictured in your head is a slow process.

I hope to get some updates soon..

jarhead 02-05-2014 05:05 PM

This just came to the top, I had never seen it before.

drool

Love the technology, tools, etc. Used to be a toolmaker, mold maker, miss having access to the tools. EDM, SLA, grinding, Bridgeport, Clausing, man i miss that stuff...

thanks for sharing

onelapduster 02-05-2014 07:02 PM

Just went through all 37 pages. Sweet project!

Jim, i see you were on last night, how bout an update. Hope all is well!

ccracin 02-06-2014 01:38 PM

I'll let him know you guys think he is slacking! He hasn't done much to the car, but he done some other really cool stuff!

Garage Dog 65 02-07-2014 04:20 PM

Hey guys,

Hasn't been much progress on the Porsche, been busy doing life stuff. My Mom had a stroke last march. Her condition deteriorated pretty quickly and her funeral was yesterday. My 90 year old father who is still at home requires a lot of time and help these days - so between mom and dad I haven't focused much on building the car.

I also changed jobs in January last year to something a bit more fun. I now work at Dallara Indy car factory in Speedway Indiana building the IRL Indycar and IndyLights cars. Building indycars and doing projects with my buddies Chad and Tom really helped keep me going lately. Thx bud !

Ok, enough whining, here's car stuff for ya.

Jim

Great new job for you!!! Congrats!!!

Can't wait to see what you and Chad have cooked up.

When we were involved with Isilon Systems -- we were the major sponsor for the Indy Lights Championship with Sam Schmidt Racing... in a Dallara...

Jim --- I've been in your spot -- and I can't tell you how sorry I am. Dealing with aging parents is just tough! My condolences for your loss.

That render is a lot more subdued than I expected... I like it! A Wolfsburg in sheeps clothing. I bet some of that race tech is going to find it's way into the build also.

Jim So sorry to hear of your mother's passing. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

LS1MonteSS 02-08-2014 10:33 AM

Sorry to hear about your mom.. My mother - in - law is in a bad way as well so I understand the effort you have been putting into caring for them..

It is nice to see your progress is job swaps. Each move as seemed to be a progression in the skills you have acquired in each position.. I'm sure you are going to find some guys at your new job that will be more than happy to lend a hand with your side project when you can fit it back into your hectic schedule..

Best regards and I look forward to seeing your project progressing in the future.

Kevin

Here are some Indy Lights pics. The chassis (tub) of the car is carbon, but most of the bodywork is fiberglass to help save money for an entry level organization.

Dallara just won the bid to build the next IndyLights cars, so we're in the process of building the molds for those parts to start production.

Greg, couple of my buddies work on the Sam Schmidt Motorsports team. Tom (in the pics of the hood mold process) is one of the front end mechanics on the 77 Simon Pagenaud car. They came very close to the indy car championship last year (3rd) and are looking to be in the hunt again this year with an even better team. It's hard for any team to compete with Penske or Ganassi dollars.... but Sam's efforts show it can be done. You picked a good one to help !

The short fat old guy just to the right of Alex Lloyd (Driver) with the GREEN wrist band on would be yours truly. LOL Was a good time while it lasted....

Jim - Thanks for the pics - carbon fiber technology continues to amaze me!

Roughly what's the weight of that tub as it sits in the pic?

GregWeld 02-08-2014 04:51 PM

I can't even imagine how cool it would be to work in a place like that!

GregWeld 02-08-2014 05:01 PM

The thread is NOT about me --- and I don't want to hijack it --- but I couldn't help but notice the changes in the aero on the front of the cars.... and I dug around and found this pic I took back in '07 of one of our cars.

I'm working on that goal buddy! I'm glad you are part of that effort.

I know I've already told you, but you have my deepest condolences. Keep your head up, you're a good son! Your commitment to your parents this last year is inspiring.

Now get back in the garage and do something cool to that P-Car!

Thanks, it's for Charlie. He wants a steering wheel to match his Budnik Illusions. They don't have one. We'll see where it goes. I'll try to give you a ring tomorrow.

3D Prototype Printing

Playing around tonight building some Damper Spacers for a friends indy car team. Used my 3D printer to print these in ABS plastic. Hour in CAD, export as an STL (stereolithography) file, open in a Slicer program to slice the model into 25 printable thin layers, convert it to G Code to run the printer stepper motors and BAM, race car parts !!!!
