She is pretty clean...plan on many more miles soon. Next is the trunk carpet and box for my subwoofer. Then it's plug and play. Should have a really good sound system. Then I am on to finishing the interior. Back seat, rear panels, and AC/Heat. This flywheel deal put me behind.

Tom.A 11-16-2008 08:50 PM

Todd,

Good to hear the vibration is better but it sucks it's not gone. I am sure the guy's a CC5S likely went over this but I was just thinking that you changed the sub frame mid-build and went with the DSE unit. Did you order your TKO kit prior to that? CC5S has two cross members for first gen camaro. Standard SBC and a big block which is offset. The BBC cross member would only apply if you either had a factory big block car or you changed the SBC engine stands to the BBC ones. Perhaps all this gets thrown out the window with an after market sub? Just thought I would mention that as you have widdled down all the other things that relate to this kind of issue.

Vegas69 11-17-2008 06:41 AM

Thanks Tom....I actually ordered a small block crossmember. Due to my half height body bushings I had to make it a two piece design. It seems to be square.

70 and sunny today...not a cloud in the sky. Polished her up and out to the middle of nowhere on the Arizona side of the lake. Broke the 1000 mile mark today and got a quick video. Road was not the best so I was taking it easy. I still can't get over just how nice it rides yet handles like my Corvette. :D

Part of building these things is tuning and lot's of it. Built from scratch means tweaking this and that to get things optimal. I've had a tip in hesitation since day one, my plugs are burning a little fat, and my radiator recovery system needed some work.
With a MSD Pro Billet distributor you have no vacuum advance. With a large camshaft that means low vacuum at idle. To help with vacuum and signal to the carb you want as much intial timing as possible. The problem is as you increase intial you increase total. Today I pulled my distributor apart to find a 21 degree bushing and the heaviest springs MSD makes. Not optimal by any means. I replaced the bushing with the black 18 degree and used the blue springs. Now advance will come in 500 rpm sooner and I can add 3 degrees initial timing.
My engine was dyno tuned in NC. I am at 2500 ft elevation and in a drier climate. I have used formulas in the past to change jets on my quad. Basically I needed to jet down .002 front and back to 79/87.
I was using a catch can which would probably work for some. With the half height body bushings it does make your engine set higher in relation to the radiator. Basically what would happen is I would top it off and drive it, as the coolant expanded it would go in the catch can . Well after a few drives the coolant would get low enough it would get an air pocket in the intake at the sensor. No problem if I topped it off ever couple times. Now I have a recovery style resorvoir. It will pull the expanded coolant back as it cools like a new car.
So I rejetted and reset the float levels, adjusted the air mixture screws and added a few degrees of initial timing. Car has never run better or smoother. In fact it's helped my vibration at freeway speeds 85-95. The poly engine mounts go in next and that will eliminate almost all of that. Tip in heistation has vastly improved. Probably going to have to send in the metering blocks to get rid of it 100%. For now it's 100% better than before all the tweaking. All and all one of the best days of work yet. Just keeps getting better!

Keep at it!!

Well it looks like I'll be without a car for 3-4 weeks. Dropping her off at www.findlaycustoms.com Monday to finish off the car from the front seats back. Back seat, rear quarter panels, sub box, trunk, probably tune the stereo and possibly recover the door panels, shorten the seat belts. Every time I walk out in the garage I turn the key instead of work on it. :D This stuff is out of my leauge anyway. It's going to suck to be without it but it's time to finish the car.

did you do a good sale lately??;)
i got a pretty good idea what the bill is gonna be for that! lol
did you get the material for the rear seats? are they just gonna cover stock one on go crazy with some customs. its gonna be killer they work is top notch, cant wait to see it todd. be sure to call me when it done so i can come see it!

Vegas69 12-03-2008 05:50 PM

It should be interesting. I like Joe down there and I think he will do me right. Nothing to crazy, just want it finished out on the level the rest of the car is on. Could I experiment with materials and boxes. Sure....but at the end of the day it needs to be done right and on par with everything else. I'm sure it won't be cheap! Thanks for reminding me. I'm in Real Estate it's been good but not that good. :D It will be the sparco material on the back seat and possibly some inlays in the side panels depending on how hard they hit my wallet on the rest. Definitely give you a call when it's done....I need to back up all the smack talk about the DSE frame anyway. One run through the twisties and you will be sold buddy.

GvEman 12-08-2008 03:26 AM

That's what he thought! Sad how many people waste your time, get your hopes up, and then don't buy the car. I think he's gone threw this three times now with this car! :(

Todd the month will fly by and it will be home before you know it! And it will be finished!

It's been a while but I have a pretty exciting update. Got back from Christmas vacation to some awesome progress. I really like the direction they are going. He had the panel done that fits over the amp and the rear package tray but didn't get any photos. They said it sounds great ...but the battery was out. Really looking forward to them working the back seat. Findlay Customs has some talent. Check it out.

Thanks buddy....I would expect within a month. After seeing the quality they can take their time. Takes the car up another notch honestly.

skatinjay27 01-02-2009 06:22 PM

sweet!!!
thats so kick ass that they even put a tuned port right there on the package tray for the sub, i bet it sounds awesome!
cant wait to see it bud.

did they put the dynamat on there? cause i thought you used second skin on the whole car...

Flash68 01-02-2009 06:44 PM

Damn, thats lookin good. You are right - that's taking the car to another level! :D

Vegas69 01-02-2009 08:31 PM

Yep....I didn't even figure out the port deal. The rear package tray and roll bar pieces were pure art in themselves. It's getting some type of suede over it. What are you trying to say flash.:D
The best part of the whole deal is there is a $450,00 Mercedes SL Mclaren blah blah in the shop across the way. Joe the manager said everyone that walks in the shop hasn't even noticed it. They walk right to that old American iron!:D

Ringbrothers 01-02-2009 09:09 PM

I like to hear the history behind the build! It makes the car have a personality - does that even make sense?
The guys would probably want to kill me for saying something like that.
Staci

Vegas69 01-02-2009 09:19 PM

Flash...you are barking up the wrong tree buddy.

Staci....thanks...I think it's important for us garage builds to help eachother out. I have a big ego but this is my first big rodeo. Others have helped me with ideas so I hope to do the same. By the way..I met Mike at Sema. Reall cool down to earth guy. Your killer builds and the nature of your workers...it's no wonder your at the top of the heap.

Ha. You know how it works on here. Everytime someone sees something slick on a car they want it too.

I have committed to no stereo and no A/C for now. But those things can obviously be added later without going backwards or redoing stuff.

Vegas69 01-02-2009 09:42 PM

That's the disadvantage of a drug out build. :_paranoid Glad it happened to me as well. You are going to want tunes man. I'm 56 songs deep into my IPOD since yesterday in anticipation. 600 hp, race car handling, twistie road, and some AC/DC. Hell yes.

Yeah I hear ya. I know I am just gonna wanna listen to the motor and exhaust for quite a while at first... and since I won't be storing the car where I live, I won't get to drive it as much as I like, so I will be craving the loudness of the car itself when I do drive it.

I got to hear the stereo today. Sounds so clean and good!!! Here is the piece for the rear deck. It will be covered in suede and conceal the speakers and port. The rear seat frame is fit as well.

I almost forgot I owned a Camaro it's been in interior jail so long:D Seriously though Findlay Customs is kicking some real tail on my car. They hope to have it ready for pick up tomorrow!:woot: Here are some photos just to tease. The next time you see an update I will be revealing the whole car complete! It will be a few weeks. Once I have it back, I need to detail it big time and slap the glove box and ash tray in it. Then out for many photos.
