Looking good.
I too am interested in those clamps. I'll have to google around for them I guess. Also, which epoxy are you spraying? |
:thankyou: ANOTHER 0? I can't do the math :lostmarbles:
oh its easy to figure out. Adding 0 would still equal 75 time that your quarters will go off and on. |

2/16 Update
Some progress today started fitting everything to the firewall / cowl to get this thing welded .... not something to take lightly when the cowl, side cowls and the upper dash are new to the car. Paranoid? Maybe.
So I welded the driver's side bracket that holds the dash to the hinge pillar and the support I cut outa the middle (by the speaker bracket) and used clamps to hold everything. installed the brake booster, steering column, E brake and bolted the old upper dash to the dash and I have a larger gap on the driver's side dash to pillar then the passenger side .... hmmm. I even installed the kick panels to check the gap ... OCD? That bracket gets welded to my new patch I made ... and the dash has to move towards the driver's side. Take it all apart and shorten that bracket some to let the dash come over .... that's for tomorrow thou. http://imageshack.us/a/img801/5361/1302161779.jpg Does anyone recognize this? :D http://imageshack.us/a/img90/4296/1302161776.jpg Getting all together! http://imageshack.us/a/img11/8446/1302161785.jpg Will have to modify this a little. I have been busy with Stats 512 and homework and today was good to get out and work on the car ..... even if I have OCD .... I'll get her tomorrow  Thanks for looking .. |
Finally pulled the trigger!
The welder trigger that is .... took everything back apart and took that bracket off and put everything back together (w/ old dash top for reference) and got the gap equal on both sides ... probably better than GM did  Measured a gazillions times again and got some heat on the top cowl and then took my time to get the firewall attached to the cowl, did not warp anything ... and that's a good day.
Anyway, here are some pics, I'll finish dressing the welds another day ... have some homework to do now!! http://imageshack.us/a/img837/4694/1302171787.jpg Put some heat here and did some massaginh w/ BFH. http://imageshack.us/a/img545/1305/1302171788.jpg NO MORE CLAMPS  http://imageshack.us/a/img689/4296/1302171793.jpg Still straight, I'll finish the welds another day  I still have to do the side cowls, piece of cake now that I have a good reference for them that's not going to move. Thanks for looking ... |
Lookin real good. This 1st.gen will end up way better the second time around.GM never went to this kind of work in the fist place.
|

There is more to come ........ |
Something is off on my car and I can't figure out exactly what it is. Fitting fenders, doors and hood shouldn't be this difficult, but it is on my car. I'm thinking, right now, that I may have to break the quarter loose in the door jamb area and see if there isn't some adjustment there. When I installed these NOS quarters, I got them to fit as tight as they could to the inner structure and to the doors.

I'm working with my AMD rep here in town cuz my door skins don't fit over my frames with out persuasion ....:bang: Not sure where this will lead. :guns: |
Update 3/3
Had a little time to work on the car, been busy at work. Just took a test for Stats so ... no homework for this weekend:D
So I finished the welds on the firewall and started getting the side cowls all lined up and screwed together, should be able to get welded here real soon. http://imageshack.us/a/img801/2619/1303031800.jpg Dressed the welds on the firewall. http://imageshack.us/a/img41/6933/1303031799.jpg Screwed the side cowls in place .... Not much of an update but I only had a few hours and I'm paranoid when it comes to getting everything right before I start welding .... bear with me :popcorn2: Thanks for looking.... |

Have you already removed the original door skins without aligning the fenders to the original doors? If you already have, you may have opened Pandora's Box |

I do not plan on removing the quarters ... the jamb area is great, it 's the areas up high (behind the sail panel) w rust and of course the lower trunk drop off area. Good luck with aligning ... sorry I can't help! |
That has been a problem with repop door skins for a while. Some have enough room to move the skin around, but then some don't. AMD seems to be a good company to work with, so I'm somewhat confident they will get it worked out for you.
Man I wish I could get some help on this front cap. I haven't even touched it lately. I moved on to cleaning up the cowl and welding on my dash top. My dash top was the first panel I removed from my car and was the last I replaced. I removed the dash completely from the car the other day because I think someone put a gallon of paint just on the dash. I wasn't interesting in spending a day or two just stripping paint from it. I'm going to sandblast it this week and get it welded back in. Luck, it seems, is the only thing I'm gonna be able to have to get this cap lined up to my liking. Too bad you and I don't live closer to one another. We could, together, have our cars moving at a tortoise pace rather than the snails pace we've been moving at. |

So What to do
when it's snowing and too cold to work in the garage? You work inside, specifically the workshop (aka bathroom) and polish the front door glass. It's kinda messy and you need water so .... use the tub and pad with some towels  I ordered the Eastwood kit and it showed up yesterday so figured I'd put it to good use.
I did not have the window roller nut tool .... so the rear glass didn't get polished. I will order the tool and replacement stuff and get those done soon. http://imageshack.us/a/img5/9563/1303091809.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img171/4046/1303091804.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img90/8176/1303091803.jpg The glass came out great, there were a few marks on the glass (scratches) that took a while to clear up, but three passes on each side took about an hour and she's better than new. Not too bad for 48 year old glass:D Really pleased with the kit  Thanks for looking ... |
Wow! I'd say they turned out great because I can't even see them:) I'll have to try out that kit now that I know it works so well.
|
Do they offer more than one kit Chief?
Maybe throw out the part number you tried and liked? Were your scratches deep enough to feel with your fingernail? I have some pretty deep ones in my original door windows that a glass guy told me 15 years ago were a lost cause. |
do you have a link to the kit you used. I need to do that too
|
Good to know the kit works. Thanks

Eastwood Polisher Kit

And since I was polishing in the tub I kept rinsing with water to check the results... slow speed on the polisher = 600rpm, just go slow and keep it moist. Quote:

Based on the reviews from Eastwoods site, it appears the deep scratch kit does not work well on tempered glass. All the glass is tempered with the exception being the windshield. None the less, I'll still try it out.

I might go with Auto City Classic's over sized glass to get rid of the trim and have it more like today"s cars, we'll wait and see. Glad to see you made progress on the front end. |
What's wrong with your factory rear glass? Who wants to look back anyways, though.

Update 3/14
Nothing too exciting ... my tool for the window nut came in today ... so I figured I'd get the quarter windows polished  Why wait?
http://imageshack.us/a/img526/2346/1303141863.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img138/6055/1303141860.jpg Came out really nice ... wrapped them up and put them away. Thanks for looking ... should be welding this weekend, AND it's Spring Break -NO SCHOOL next week  just homework! |
Finally a side cowl
welded in, now that's a good Camaro day:thumbsup:.
Got the passenger side cowl welded in ... little heat, some hammer/ dolly work, and some more heat and she's all good. I'm gonna wait on the outer shell til I can get some undercoat or Lizard Skin on the inside. http://imageshack.us/a/img28/9853/1303161866.jpg Welded and hammered in  http://imageshack.us/a/img203/2594/1303161864.jpg So that's what it will look like ... almost forgot :relax: The driver's side will take more work cuz the stamping is off and I have to fill where I sliced to make it fit correctly .... but I will get on it tomorrow fer sure. If the temp is good tomorrow I may spray some epoxy ... we'll see! Thanks for looking .... |
  Respect!
|
Lookin great. I hope the garage is stayin warm.
|
Well Done Chief! Good Camaro Day for sure!!
You know, I am pretty blessed with how clean my Camaros body is. At least as far as I know anyway... knock on wood. For me there is always a level of uncertainty. But I tell you what, you know exactly what you have and how meticulous and solid the work on yours is. Be very proud of your work. You set a great example. Robert |
Thanks!

Mind? Heck no! I smiled when I read it.:D
I'm sure I'm not the only one learning from your thread either. |
Looks good Chief!
You all need to pass some of that 'Good Camaro Day' karma my way. I purchased trunk lid #5 and it showed up yesterday. Guess what? Didn't fit worth a darn. I haven't even braved trying to get back to work on my front cap. I'm probably going to go talk to a local resto shop and see about getting them to deal with it. I've just lost my patience for it. I'm ready to start block sanding and spraying some color damnit!! |
Good day!

I finished welding the driver's cowl .... what a PITA, made two patches where I had to slice the corners and wrestled it back in place. Weld, hammer/ dolly and more heat and she fits. http://imageshack.us/a/img534/7797/1303171871.jpg Good Camaro Day fer sure  http://imageshack.us/a/img339/928/1303171872.jpg Finish with some epoxy primer and some undercoat! I'll finish dressing the welds another time .... I'm beat! Thanks for looking.... time to :relax: |
