Is that thing rear engined or are those firework launchers I see in the back? I'm honestly not sure which I would like better, lol. That truck looks like it belongs in the CARS universe.

I got nothin....other than it's been for sale for a long time.

Che70velle 04-12-2015 07:45 PM

Ouch.

DavidBoren 04-13-2015 12:03 PM

About that red truck being "hard to beat"... I think that it fails completely in every single criteria GW has set for his build.

Cool truck, GW. Should be really nice when it's finished.

GregWeld 06-14-2015 07:21 AM

The designer I'm working with - Jim Smith - sent some ideas along so we can begin to work on "details". I had posted earlier that I'd met Bill Collings of Collings Guitars, at the Lonestar Roundup in Austin. He agreed to build a one off steering wheel for the truck... and this is a rendering Jimmy did...

http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...kup/img190.jpg

A paint "version" (there have been several).... It would NOT be yellow/green like this - We're playing with a scheme rather than a color... and this was also about one off wheels.... Wheel pic is below. I'm trying to keep a fairly '50's theme -- with some simplicity in the build because this will be my daily driver...

http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...WELD40sage.jpg

http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...LDartlyWHL.jpg

And then some interior designs....

http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...up/WELDint.jpg

http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...p/WELDdash.jpg

Since we take our Lab, Stella, everywhere with us - I wanted a space she can get out of the weather... This particular design is perfect except the "end" where it is too Conestoga wagon looking... so take that out (the closing flap part of it)... and it's a go.

Greg, i love those renderings (sure the style too lol) but just looking a pencil sketches in a world of CAD, not only is it right for the truck, its a dying art.

I pencil sketch bathrooms for people (cause we do a boatload of custom frameless shower doors) and its fun. My dad was a car pencil sketcher in the 60's and i have all of his renderings, gonna be framing 'em up for family members...

GregWeld 06-14-2015 08:22 AM

I was going with the Ring Brothers Chevelle "tan" but now think this color will work better for what I'm trying to achieve....

Whats a Dow 7 paint finish?

Dow 7 is a chromate conversion process used on magnesium wheels. It results in a golden finish with red and green iridescent hues. It's a very fragile finish that provides almost no corrosion protection and was intended to last only long enough for the magnesium to be painted.

Wow Greg some interesting stuff going on this one. I'm looking forward to some pictures of the truck as its being done.

Exactly right - only different.... we're talking about a PAINT finish that makes it look like a Dow 7 finish. Think of a Weber Carb Body color... but painted.

Your wanting to Dow coat the artillery looking wheels or more of a mag style wheel like the drawing. The hub cap wheels Dow coated will be weird as they kinda look like a steel wheel. The Dow coated mag wheels would be cool with some dragster push bumper stuff on it.

Che70velle 06-15-2015 04:27 AM

So the wheels are a painted aluminum? The rendering looks cool, Greg.
You gonna two tone the paint, like the rendering, but use the dark base, with the tanish fenders?

Graham08 06-15-2015 04:29 AM

The renderings look great! I follow Jim on Instagram, he's always doing something cool.

I like the one-off "mag" wheels with the knock-offs. Pinkee's has done these on a couple different builds and they all look great.

See below.... there won't be any "mag" styled wheels on this project.

See below for wheel answer.

NO --- I don't like the two tone.... It will be one color. And mostly likely be painted in a single stage Urethane.... Not base/clear. I plan to wash this with a mitt and a bucket of soap.... I don't want to have to care about swirls etc in the paint.

The answer to all of the above is NO...... you're all confusing one rendering with another. The full body rendering showed a proposed wheel design - which I nix'd.... because the truck is being built as a daily driver. Daily drivers need frequent washing... as they aren't show cars that are packed away in cotton balls... That style "mag" wheel had the proposed DOW 7 PAINT...

The Artillery "styled" billet wheel was an alternative because I objected to the "mag" style wheel (not based on looks - but based on the DD use of the project). However.... There is not one good reason I can come up with for paying for a one off billet wheel and the painting of them etc... when I can buy them all day long off the shelf.

I didn't include all the discussion details between builder / designer / owner. I was just showing "direction".

Graham08 06-15-2015 08:02 AM

I like the artillery wheels, too. I like it even more that the intended purpose is to be driven often and design decisions are being made to make that a reality.

Thanks for sharing the process with us!

DBasher 06-15-2015 09:18 AM

The rendering looks great....well other then the two tone, color and wheels,LOL!

The subtle chop looks fantastic! :action-smiley-027:

Front mounted camera, patched to her very own 36" HD monitor, mounted to a custom, one off billet bracket, in the front of the bed. She also has her own Vintage Air unit, with automated bark controls.

It's obvious you've not worked thru the designer/client relationship.... Where they send you lots of "versions" and you eventually end up with a design that meets the desires... LOL

Think of it as a smorgasbord... You look it all over and pick the crap you think you'd like.

See --- when you do this stuff - you pick a designer(s) that has done some things you've seen that you like... you have a long conversation about your "look" and "feel" of the project. Then they start sending you stuff... at first you just let 'em slide and you shrug your shoulders... obviously they need direction and they're just totally in the dark. So you say subtle things to them like "did you ever attend classes at the art school?".... or "well... that looks like something my Grandmother would drive". Then they send you a few more of their crazy ass ideas... and you give them more "input" like.... "is this for some other customer?" or "I didn't know you worked on the BatMobile". After a few back and forth along these lines - they settle down and get to work with some of the ideas YOU gave them 7 sets of drawing and $3500 in billings ago. I usually give them kudos at this point something along the lines of "one more set and we're done" or "I've got some stuff I really like from "X" (his competitor) that I think is going to work". After "critiquing" a few details, some times I ask them if they'd really like me to post this sh!t on the Internet...

In about a year they finally come up with one to two things you can use and everybody is happy.

LOL

tom091074 06-16-2015 10:55 PM

I wish I had a truck like that for a grocery getter. Nice truck GW!

Payton King 06-23-2015 07:57 AM

You need a roll down back glass so when Stella in riding in the back, she can stick her head through and still feel like one of the family.

fleet 06-23-2015 08:29 AM

I thought of that too.

It would require a driver that possessed amazing powers of concentration it would seem.

I had the roll down back glass on my Marlboro Syclone

http://sportmachines.com/gallery3/va...6_7643_IMG.jpg

it also had a Targa roof which may not look so good on your truck

http://sportmachines.com/gallery3/va...9/2879_004.jpg

and you are getting older so being exposed directly to the sun for long hours isn't good for your skin.

GregWeld 06-23-2015 08:40 AM

Bought this "project" for Alex this weekend.... at the LA Roadsters Show swap meet - on Sunday after it was closed. LOL

It's all complete and just needs to be blown apart and finished. So guess Dad is now building Alex his first "hot rod". He can use it for his business... and it gives me something to do.
