Tank Update!

We just finished the design on the oil tank & is looking like we will be able to carry about 10.5 qts of oil like the ZR-1... Got a few more things to work out on the baffel design & machine some fittings & begin to make the final tank..

I think we found a way to fill oil thru the engine compartment & not have to fill thru the fender.. still working on that one.. The oil level will be checked thru a sight glass that can be viewed in the kick panel area... I think it will work.. :D

My mind has been consumed for a week in a half with this damm tank!!

Overall design, baffles and return look great Chris! Perhaps someone on this forum knows how to simulate heavy fluid behavior (Carl?) to ensure proper flow...?

Also, why design fittings - other than the fact they're cool - when you could use off the shelf pieces?

Ron- My buddy that comes in the shop every Saturday happens to be a mechanical engineer who has worked & designed components for fluids & air flow.. another reason exhaust has been CAD designed.. want the X-over box to have balance.. not create turbulance

You will see when I get the tank done why we did the custom fittings.. Plus I have a few tanks I got to build.. & oil breather tank..

Cris.... way cool!

Just one more complicated thought to add to your misery. Why not try to include a cleanable screen type (pancake style not canister style) oil filter inclusive in the tank IF you have to do an access in the fender area... it would be one less mounting (remote mount filter) and less plumbing fittings etc...

I was thinking that you'd make a removable top (O ringed) and just be able to pull the screen out - clean it and drop it back in... it would just be a stock cleanable filter plumbed inside the tank on the pressure return side - and that you'd be able to remove the whole top of the tank.

Just thinking out loud....

Thanks for the input Greg!! The design is not final & might change next week to simplify it... I got some parts on order right now for the filler neck.. that will determine final outcome..

Cris, what's your guess on when you'll be painting it?

Cris@JCG 10-11-2010 08:29 AM

Good question Skip! I am hoping to have it in the body shop in the next six weeks.. We still have alot of work to do on it.. We are working on the 3 pcs spoiler right now... Have to do the exhaust so that we can finish fab work for the opening on the tail panel for exhaust tips.. All the work has been completed on the fender stretch with front wheel well housings & firewall..
