Car is looking great Will.

This is coming out great. I love the shot with all the turbo hardware laying on the floor great stuff!
|
Thanks. Slightly depressing but it'll get back to shape before TOO long.

There has been some progress and hoping for some more this weekend.
Mounted the master cylinders on the new firewall and starting building the plan (and parts list) to get the brake lines completed. http://i.imgur.com/4OBIWTR.jpg Decided that building the brake lines on the rearend would be easier if it was out of the car, and have to pull it out anyway to change the gears out. Crazy how dusty it's gotten over the years and travels from shop to shop. http://i.imgur.com/iUFn5v5.jpg http://i.imgur.com/uHQEJHD.jpg I wiped down the housing and prepared it for the rear brake installation http://i.imgur.com/lU1LjmZ.jpg Brakes installed on both sides. This took some doing as I had lost the installation instructions, Tobin at Kore3 has since emailed them to me, so I will re-verify everything when I do final installation after the gear change this weekend. http://i.imgur.com/0xPaTbA.jpg Glad the wheel fits as I hadn't checked this previously. I was sure it would as the templates for the calipers had been sent to Forgeline when we spec'd the wheels. http://i.imgur.com/v86ZQXC.jpg http://i.imgur.com/Gx8SSPD.jpg While this was going on, I sold my old dash as it was going to cost more to fix it for a racepak, than to just buy a new one and sell the old one. I will fill this with racepak and a/c vent(s) and a controller for the a/c and the various buttons/switches for the car. http://i.imgur.com/P44mB8Q.jpg Thanks to Ron Sutton, I have one of the new IQ3s Racepak. This is their new street friendly dash. http://i.imgur.com/UuBd8cq.jpg http://i.imgur.com/zCoJU45.jpg This weekend I will be installing the new ring gear in the rearend (3.50 to replace the 4.10). I will be installing the brake lines on the housing, assuming the tee fitting required arrives tomorrow (on time). The rearend will be put back under the car and secured for the final time! I'm sure that will take me through this weekend, but if it doesn't, the car will be going back up on the cribs and I'll start working on the remaining brake lines. One thought I've been kicking around, is about using a non-A/C dash with the vintage air unit and putting two vents on the dash. I'd be stealing a vent from my passenger, but i think they'll still be ok with one on the passenger side. What are your thoughts on this? William |
:weld:
Good to see the car going back in the direction of assembly instead of more tear down. Are you talking about splitting the two center air ducts and bringing one to the drivers side. The vintage air has four individual ducts coming out of the unit. Two for the middle and one that goes to far driver side and one to the far passenger side. :flag2: |
Hmmm. Hadn't looked at it.
Not sure what I'd do with the second for the center vent William |
that is some very nice work, especially the SS pipe fit
|
Thanks, and I agree. The SS fitting is excellent, and M2K did an excellent job fabbing all the turbo kit etc. Couldn't be happier with the work that Kevin did.
Price way high but he justifies it with the quality of work. William |
Gears are swapped out and the 4.11's are listed for sale.
Diff will be put back in the housing today and rear re-assembled. I did some pattern checking on pushrod length and all appears to be in good order so will button the motor back up after rearend is back together. Hoping to get started on the rear brake lines tomorrow, then get that axle back in the car! REALLY hoping to have the motor back in the car in a couple weeks. |
Oil pan is on for good and bottom of motor is buttoned up.
http://i.imgur.com/kM7DteW.jpg Top side has pushrods measured and installed as well. http://i.imgur.com/n9ehpds.jpg Started making brake lines. Had to order a lot of fittings specific to the application. Spent more time than I'd like to admit trying to flare the brake lines. http://i.imgur.com/CCB2tl4.jpg http://i.imgur.com/KUPDISj.jpg http://i.imgur.com/Z6YzfP8.jpg Then started trying to flare. It didn't go well. http://i.imgur.com/X68FlnE.jpg Finally got it figured out and finished up the rear lines http://i.imgur.com/oiK0WSe.jpg http://i.imgur.com/DbJdGJ2.jpg http://i.imgur.com/dhJNA2v.jpg I have the flex lines now to finish off the run to the calipers and will do that when I get back to the back to finish up the brakeline from the master (this weekend). Also had a scratched to hell diff fill cap. Took 30 minutes and sanded out the gouges and ended up with a brushed finish. http://i.imgur.com/Oa5NetL.jpg |
Rearend went back in.
[quote] http://i.imgur.com/qbrCRyS.jpg I had the front end part finalizing the brake setup and making sure everything was nice and tight. http://i.imgur.com/5d4nebp.jpg She's back on blocks and ready to have the brakes completed and the motor re-installed. http://i.imgur.com/Jgpi3eX.jpg http://i.imgur.com/IvtDG70.jpg |
Changed the hardware on the engine mounts. One of the threads was jacked up, so there was one bolt on the drivers side missing (discovered when I pulled the motor).
http://i.imgur.com/j00CP6B.jpg Figured since I'm changing them, I'd just put arp hardware. http://i.imgur.com/tuffM37.jpg As you could see in the previous picture. I got the moroso "roll control" (i.e. Line lock) installed. http://i.imgur.com/s32DOFk.jpg Everything is bolted with rivserts and 1/4-20 stainless caps head hardware. Next up was placing the brake light pressure switch. Since I have the Wilwood pedals it's not as easy to adapt a plunger style brake light switch. This came highly recommended. http://i.imgur.com/9hE0qj8.jpg I build the simple line between the two of those. http://i.imgur.com/6hKdzAS.jpg Now starting the lines off the master cylinder. Almost done with the line for the front brakes (to the switch). http://i.imgur.com/VC9ZGjs.jpg http://i.imgur.com/qWNcZ2v.jpg I have both flex lines mounted and secured and the remaining hardware I need to finish the fronts arrived yesterday so I will finish that line today or tomorrow and then the motor can be returned to it's final resting place. William |
This is a very clean build! Looking great so far.
|
I bet those brake lines are a pain . Even though it looks so easy.
Car is looking great |
Nice work on the brake lines, Will.
|
Thanks and yes it has been a pain. I've been getting lucky so far with the bends, but the flares have been killing me. So much so that i tend to leave a little "room" for a "re-try" and when it works first time it makes the line a little more difficult to install.
I should have some more pictures soon of the progress lately. |
Well I was making my run through lines and a friend came and mixed it all up.
Previously I had the lines as above and added in the line for the rear. http://i.imgur.com/6XhdrER.jpg In my head this was "ok" but wasn't ideal for how I was wanting the lines to look. Nine Ball made a suggestion for how to route them and i'm happy he did! http://i.imgur.com/SlG24wP.jpg I decided to "free hand" the bends on some scrap tubing to see how it would look. http://i.imgur.com/SMC2Ez9.jpg http://i.imgur.com/NJmWVG0.jpg He was right, it looked MUCH better. Decided I was going to bite the bullet and risk running short on stainless to re-do those lines. http://i.imgur.com/ZgrqsuZ.jpg All three lines are in place there, clutch still needs to be bent and terminated for the hydraulics there. I also finished up the cross piece for the front brakes and used my nice stainless brake clamps I got. http://i.imgur.com/Yppfn0y.jpg http://i.imgur.com/rRoFdBa.jpg Finished up the bends on the rear line to get it closer to the floor and where I could secure it to the frame/floor. http://i.imgur.com/CHG9bGc.jpg http://i.imgur.com/0W8YiNr.jpg Since I ditched about 2-3ft of tubing, I did come up shorter than I had hoped. Ended up about 6-12" shorter than I was originally looking for, so I just bought a slightly longer flex line (due in wednesday) http://i.imgur.com/3hfobCX.jpg Overall, I'm pretty happy for my first time doing this. Could I do it better? Probably. Maybe this will be re-visited someday...but i doubt it (unless there is an issue). http://i.imgur.com/75fjmpK.jpg With that finished, it's time to start looking to install the engine/transmission back in the car. I wanted to trim the bellhousing so it didn't hang lower than the oil pan. http://i.imgur.com/LO6PC61.jpg That took a bit to cut, but got it done and re-painted (no pics). I also got some old parts blasted while at Nine Ball's place, so they're ready to be painted and be put back on the car (when the time is right). http://i.imgur.com/BlRIjv4.jpg?1 http://i.imgur.com/MIH5rPt.jpg First time taking this bad boy out of the box. Was happy to see the splines lined up (was nervous as I never confirmed it was the right clutch). http://i.imgur.com/6QVGuuj.jpg Was going to be making solid progress until I found....no flywheel bolts... http://i.imgur.com/xcfwVBJ.jpg Always seems to be the case that when you get momentum something stops it. LSX didn't come with them (not surprised) and clutch didn't (not a huge surprise either as they typically are re-used from stock). I have a set of ARP bolts coming in tomorrow. Hoping to have this in before I leave for Mexico this weekend. William |
Nice job on the brake/clutch lines they look good. At least you know waiting for the bolts is a worth while up grade over stock bolts. Very nice Will.

Looking forward to wiring this thing up with you!
Get this thing fired up. :guns: |
Great progress Will, car is looking great:trophy-1302:

Those lines look sexy!:gitrdun:

The lines are looking great.
We're you able to get the various fittings in stainless, such as the 90° tube to brake line? :ups: |

Hoping motor goes in tomorrow!!! William |
That master cylinder setup is clean! Looks amazing with the shaved firewall.

I'm wishing I had just done those pedals and master assy, with the smooth firewall in that area. It has been a PITA to get my stock pedals to play nice with all the fancy hardware upgrades. Haha
|
Hidden costs in this pedal are what get ya. And the fab required to make it rigid on a smooth firewall. But very happy I did them now! Hope they work as good as they look!
|
Awesome build!

Made some more progress but another roadblock keeps the engine trans out for now.
Got the pilot bearing. Confirmed it matched the input shaft and installed it. http://i.imgur.com/fnHZzFd.jpg http://i.imgur.com/GWNAxof.jpg Bellhousing front cover installed (didn't do this first time before flywheel so had to rework...) http://i.imgur.com/Y9icWPq.jpg Flywheel installed. http://i.imgur.com/I5DEcIZ.jpg Clutch installed. http://i.imgur.com/fZYPPNo.jpg http://i.imgur.com/hdHXlcP.jpg Installed slave to complete checks on if I needed a shim and saw this...wtf! It's for a c5. New one arrives Friday... http://i.imgur.com/Xj53eyh.jpg Since I was stuck on the motor. I moved to something else. Installed the power door locks. http://i.imgur.com/WNuEbyr.jpg http://i.imgur.com/B7Thj4F.jpg http://i.imgur.com/nxwldMu.jpg Then moved on to some arts and crafts to lay out the dash before I start making cuts. This isn't finalized and looking for comments/suggestions still. http://i.imgur.com/QbOM23D.jpg http://i.imgur.com/frDYlGk.jpg http://i.imgur.com/vdtIsan.jpg Dash items. Upper portion left to right: AC vent, Racepak, racepak mode buttons (1&2), AC vent Lower portion left to right: Headlight, line lock, Holley input, (gap for steering column), start button, AC controller. I am looking at adding a 4th button on the left of moving them one spot to the right to give room for the windshield wiper control when I get it. |
Suggestions...
Will its looking good.
A couple of things that I have come across; What kind of light dimming ability does the racepak have? On my Dakota Digital VHX gauges it has the default one dimming but can be adjusted from the programming side, I did not realize that the factory lighting rheostat within the stock headlight switch will not work, AAW offers a stand alone switch for adjusting, that looks like the stock headlight switch (additional hole) the option that I am going with. I think I want the additional flexibility of adjusting the intensity at will without going into programming mode. Have you decided on which wiper system you are going with? The latest version of DSE is a fairly small footprint on the switch side. On the backside of my factory bezel I had to get a little creative due to the thin plate on the front side. (your are using an aftermarket setup so that will not be an issue). :superhack: :flag2: |
Quote:
Will be using DSE motor/setup with rain gear to keep firewall clean. |
Sounds like they have they same type setup with the trigger wire.
I just wanted to add the flexibility of changing it further without going into programing mode. |
