Having a wrenching talent like crew chief Rich 'Smokey' Bermea and a world class athlete for a driver, Flash 'Hotshoe' Gordon, they're gonna make the Queen... uh Mary, proud for years to come.

Having Mary drive the car and give feedback, is like having Eddie Van Halen play your guitar!:hail:

LOL---

Sorry for the highjack Dr. Gordon--I'll send you some left over Tri Tip. I was looking on my parts wall this evening gazing at the Pep Boys chrome coil on the wall and found another Bud Light bottle cap behind one of the model cars on the shelf. I wonder how it got there----hmmmmmm.

 Oh man, more RTTC flashback chatter.... love it.

Still working on setting up a track day in the coming months... possible candidates so far are Fernley, NV and Buttonwillow... Rich wants to do Laguna Seca (as would I), but everyone I know who has a lot of experience at that track tells me about the hardcore enforcement of the ridiculously low 92db sound limit. Talk about a buzzkill. And as some do, I don't feel like going intentionally slow near the sound meters, or as yet others do, making a custom exhaust just to point away from the meter. No thanks. :willy:

Doug -- yes please send some of your badass tri tip!!!

Come down for Del Mar next weekend! You can save Doug the UPS charge...

Pozzi said he had some type of sound measuring device we could try. We will do Laguna Seca!

If you take a look at the bike on the far right in this picture in front of the rear tire and below the swingarm you can see the exhaust tip that FMF made for the KTM RC8's that the Skip Barber School uses to defeat the sound check. The stock exhuast is undermounted with a right side rear exit. The tip was essentially a "J" shape to exit left.

The new models we were testing did have the mod and they asked us to feather the throttle past the station coming out the fast uphill T-5............gotcha. :unibrow: Only the a few timid riders followed that rule.

Running the track once is worth the hassle. Be prepared for the G-out in turn 6! Check header and oil pan clearance and possibly add bump stops to the suspension for it. I'm guessing base on the bikes that a car plants pretty hard there, maybe someone with Camaro experience there can verify?

I have a sound measuring device too. It's called my ear. Trust me, I know quieter cars that have been black flagged there. Even the Porsche guys I know make custom exhausts to shoot away from the sound meter. I
can barely hear Porsches at WOT. :_paranoid

Someday man... we'll get there.

Yep, it's such a common trick to aim the exhaust/sound.

Your other warnings are making me a little nervous tho now... :_paranoid

No need to be nervous if you do your homework and you're prepared. :D

Not that I've ever holed an oil pan before. :_paranoid

I'll get there but I'm still very new on the track... I'd like to get more seat time at other places before Laguna to be honest.

I think I need to get a dipstick for my oil pan first.

Laguna isn't bad for a beginner. Just don't go out and try and set the lap record first sesson. :D It's not a high-speed circuit, more technical. You just need to establish your reference points for approach, turn in, and braking. Turn 1, 6, 7, and 8 (the corkscrew) are blind so references are on the horizon or the track surface. I think the max speed I saw cresting T-1 on the KTM RC8R was 145, the MotoGP guys see about 165 which is hard to comprehend. I'd guess you might see 130-135 with your car, the key is scrubbing speed on the downhill approach to the dual apex Andretti hairpin (T-2). It's a great track!

I haven't ran any car track days, I'll assume they're similar to bikes and run three 20 minute sessions on the hour for advanced, intermediate, and beginner skill levels?

CrossRamRich 03-30-2011 11:29 PM

List of things to do before i die:
1. Laguna Seca
2. Still working on number one

Flash, check out trackmasters racing. I ran with those guys when I had the sti. Super mellow, and they will put an instructor in the car with you first time. Headsets and all. The info they give you is priceless- cool guys too.

Track Junky 03-31-2011 02:10 AM

A case of the nerves is normal for anyone your first track outing. Hell, even second and third. The thing you should remember is that there are skill level groups that you could choose to be in and in each of those groups most everybody around you feels the same way and are most likely thinking the same thing you are, bringing themselves and their car home in one piece.

I'll be running a time trial event with NASA May 14th at Thunderhill. You should sign up for HPDE 1. That way you can ride with an instructor to learn the line on the track in your car and then you can ride with me and get an idea of what it will feel like wheel to wheel.

Fair warning: Road racing can be addicting and hazardous to your wallet.

Headsets?? Hell, I don't want anyone talking to me while I'm running. It's just me and the road.

In all seriousness, thanks, I'll check that out! I gotta get down and see your car... and that motor!

Dammit, I'd love to come that weekend but I think that's the weekend of a debaucherous bachelor party I'm going to in Guerneville. We are renting a house for 20 dudes a half block from the brewery. That won't get messy. :_paranoid

I do wanna go for a ride with you on the track soon tho man!

Almost a month since an update from me. That's a first I think. :P

So I saw on another forum recently there was a local photography student working on his masters at SF Academy of Art and was looking for various types of cars to shoot for his senior thesis. Being more of a Euro/Porsche/etc forum, he got lots of Porsches volunteering. I offered to be his muscle car guy and we met up about a week ago and toured some semi rural roads behind my office in the east bay. He is pretty talented for a student I thought. Curious to know what some pro's like Rupp or McGaffin would think, but either way thought I'd post some of his and my faves.

Disclaimer: the last one with me "posing" is something he asked me to do, as well as all his past subjects, as he was in part trying to profile the owners of the cars as well. :captain:

Thanks bro! It's actually a photoshopped still shot where he hooks up this rig with a 15 foot pole deal hanging off the side. It was a home fabbed deal by a friend of his. Worked really well and was sturdy.
