Things are still moving along. All these little things take forever. Here are some of the details I've been working on to try and wrap the bed up. I'll let the pics talk. Just small stuff.

Now onto the tail gate. We are running a latch flip kit, but we can't leave well enough alone. It's a nice universal kit, but needs some refinement.

This kit is built to allow anyone with some basic tools to use other than filling the outside skin where the original handle was. Because I like to add to the "To Do' list, here are some changes.

As promised, here is the close to finished results. I still have one more addition, but that will require a custom part.

woo hoo!!! Looks good. Haven't busted your attachments lately and I won't do it now. Keep making progress.

(and before you ask, house is in slow-motion, truck still runs, and I'm knee deep in a '92 YJ rehab project that should turn out pretty sweet)

Nice work chad.

Thanks Scott! It seems all things these days are knee deep and in slow motion!

Here is a question for everyone, do you like seeing all the detail pics? It seems like we work for days and days making progress but the end result is hard to see sometimes in pics. That's one of the reasons I try to show alot of the detail pics. Also, I hope it will give others that may be looking that don't always post some ideas. I'm not saying they are all the best ideas:confused18: , but ideas never the less!

I have some pics of how we decided to mount the bed so you don't see the mounting bolts, but it's not exciting stuff! Oh well, I'll get them loaded up and posted. No point in stopping now!

HBRod 10-01-2014 08:37 AM

Details - yes

Personally I really like the detail pictures. The old adage of "a picture is worth a thousand words" certainly comes to mind. I look at them and study as much detail as I can gather/infer from it. Yes, it's difficult to explain how much work goes into the fabrication process until each of us tries something simple and how much time it took us to get the part where we would accept it. That why I enjoy looking at the work of those who truly have the skill and knowledge on how to make really nice fab work.

I don't pretend to have your level of talent but I can vicariously enjoy viewing the hard work you put into the cars you build. IMHO

Thanks for the kind words Rod. This is like anything else research, practice, make mistakes, and fix them. I don't claim to be as skilled as many on this site, but i'm trying hard and really like the feedback from folks in the community. Sometimes when you look at and focus on something or one area for so long, you start to not see things! In my Engineering group we have a policy of having at least a second set of eyes check all drawings and designs before they are released. I suppose some of this is me getting all of you to check my work and make sure I didn't do something really dumb! Thanks for looking!

Alright guys, you asked for it! :captain1:

ccracin 10-02-2014 05:40 AM

Continuing on the goal of getting the bed wrapped up, it's time to get it mounted permanently. Because I have some special plans for the bed wood, I needed a way of mounting the bed without seeing the hardware. Like some many things on this truck, since I built a new chassis most of the stock solutions will not work. One of the stock items we did use are the supports for the bed floor although modified! My plan was to use captured nut plates welded into the bottom of the factory support and then bolt up through the chassis brackets and viola! Mounted! That simple plan required alot of work!

Because its' never a good idea to bolt through tube steel due to crushing, I added sleeves to the tubing created a proper bolted joint.

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r...ps5e682e8d.jpg

The photo I forgot to take was the 3/4" OD 1/8" wall tube slug I used as the sleeve.

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r...ps4d8f83d3.jpg

Here are the steps in building and attaching the captured bolt plates.

Next time, I'll see if the holes line up! Thanks for looking!

I've built a few of these trucks. Always nice to see a nice one come together.

Keep up the good work.

Maybe we can come together and show these care guys what a good truck can do... then again, one of my current projects is a 2nd gen Camaro.

8 years!!!

Hey everyone, I just want to be the first to wish Chad and Chops a very 8TH Birthday!!!

Today marks the 8th Birthday/Anniversary of Project: Woo Hoo it's Started!

:underchair:

But seriously, Chad and Chops are building this phenomenal truck from the ground up, with their own frame, with a small budget, in their spare time, using their own engineering, and from their own garage. My hat's off to them for their diligence and know how.

Keep up the great work and....um....:gitrdun: !! :poke:

We're ready for more :weld: , :flashie: , , and maybe some of :_party: but NOT any of :brix: , :drama: , :twak: , :bang: , or :catfight:

Because we want this :king:

Info on this one? What's one more project, right?

That's our motto. Sometimes you build them, sometimes you part them, sometimes you sell them. Either way good parts and deals are nice to have.

Here yah Go JJ.

https://lateral-g.net/forums/showthread.php4?t=47314

You can reach me at 724- Five one 8 - one 5 zero 7 if you have any questions. We are going to start redoing the chassis soon if it doesn't go. The more time we spend on it, well you know what I mean. I think it's a good deal as is. I'm going to hopefully pick up a new tail gate tonight. We'll see if it's as advertised.

ccracin 01-12-2015 09:53 AM

The holes did in fact line up from my last update, but it didn't make for a good picture. Now that the bed is bolted to the chassis and we can maintain the alignment, it's time to continue finishing the fab on the bed sides. One of the design ques is rocker exit exhaust. Because this project is flying along so quickly and I need more to do :sieg: simply cutting a hole and sticking the tubing through just won't work. I will post a screen shot of the design as soon as I tweak a couple things. Until then here is the start of the fabrication. The machined parts will follow. Lets call this the mounting sleeve.

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r...ps8mw9h8v0.jpg

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r...psuquxgnsn.jpg

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r...psugwphjly.jpg

The pattern I used for the sleeve was done in solidworks. I used a profile gauge to get the curvature of the rocker panel and then scanned that into the computer. From there I built the models and printed the templates for the sleeve and the cutout below. It worked surprisingly well!

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r...psemkjwezp.jpg

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r...ps8ikxrzwz.jpg

Time to cut the hole and check the fit. No turning back now!

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r...psubfofx7i.jpg

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r...ps0wqboj9r.jpg

Love it, I can work with that. Time to weld it up and finish it off.

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r...ps7nsyhaub.jpg

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r...pss5rsyaa7.jpg

Now to do it one more time on the other side. Once the other side is done, I will take some as built measurements to adjust the models for the machined parts. Then it's off to the machine shop. Thanks for checking it out!

waynieZ 01-12-2015 03:46 PM

It looks good, nice job!

ccracin 09-09-2015 06:25 PM

Holy crap, I didn't realize how long it has been since I posted an update. Progress has been made albeit slow. Summer is rough to make progress as well as getting my business up and going and trying to ship my Wheel Tek tools.

Enough excuses. After getting the exhaust sleeve in the rocker, it was time to make the mount for the rocker treatment that will be coming.

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r...psemrn6lcx.jpg

It is adjustable so that it will line up with the cab during final assembly.

Then we decided we wanted to finish off the rear wheel wells a bit. This turned into a much larger project than expected. Don't they all?

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r...psmxbqpty0.jpg

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r...psvvkrdbxh.jpg

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r...pslsiz9fcj.jpg

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r...psi4mstd7s.jpg

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r...ps39eejshl.jpg

The bottoms have been left long to interface with the rear pan that is coming as well as the rocker treatments. I just moved over to the drivers side to make it match. Thanks for checking in!

HWY Nova 09-09-2015 06:28 PM

Good progress!!!!!

This Thread Probably Dead

Well everyone, it seems Photobucket now wants $400 a year to allow third party hosting. Which means this build thread is dead. They're not going to get that from me and the thread is too long to rebuild. Not sure what I'll do from here. It was fun while it lasted.
