It's been stated already - who you are and who you know! :D Bringing a killer car seals the deal.
I'm just kidding. :P There may be some truth in that, but leaving that statement like it is takes away from the accomplishments of the builders. If you can't build a half-decent car, I doubt your connections will get you a pick, let alone a trophy. We're really debating the fine details here. Almost all those cars are works of art, it's just a matter of what level of art should be eligible to compete for the big prize.
As for the issue of building for trophies, I see it as the same as racing. It's just another form of competition. If the rules are fair, it takes a serious athlete to even be in contention. I just love competition whether it's on a track or a stage.
