It's possible that the retaining plate has been tweaked as well causing the slack. We need to be careful with to much preload since it does hold on the backing plate as well. Let's get on the same page after I talk to Wilwood and you tear into yours. We'll get this whipped.

bigtyme1 05-22-2009 02:55 PM

Hey Todd,Just curious, did anybody ask frank about this issue? He sells alot of these set ups and it's the first time I've heard of it. I have the same set up as you. Hope to be test driving soon to see if I have the same issue.

Vegas69 05-22-2009 03:30 PM

LOL Me and Frank always talk about everything. He hasn't come across it yet. I have it figured out and will post updates soon.

Which would you want in that high speed corner?

No questioning the difference there. They look like their for different aplications (Trailer queen on the left and real car on the right). Nice catch on this I will have to mention this to Mike when he builds my Fab 9.

Hey Todd,

I was going through some old pics and came across a few from your car.

Here she is in all her glory right before she was blown apart and transformed into the BEAST she has now become. I figured everyone would get a kick out of these. That baby has come a long way!!!

ENJOY!!!

Thanks Nick! She didn't look to bad back then. The car actually drove really well after swapping out the plugs. Such a solid starter. Very few of them left.

Thats for sure!! I haven't come across one that original and solid since yours. I know they're out there, but most are garage queen #'s cars. A solid 307 car to build on........few and far between.

BIG CHANGE!:wow:

Vegas69 05-29-2009 09:15 PM

I've got a ton of time in this car. Not just rolling around underneath but planning. The car was a super nice start.

The car has been up on jack stands for to long now for 4 link bushing fatigue and brake pad knock back. I have both issues resolved I think. Here is a look at my stock G Bar/Air Ride bushings after 2200 miles and one autocross.
http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...1969/003-5.jpg
Clearly I have compromised both bushings especially the triangulated bushing. When I ran the Autocross I had no rub in the morning and made some adjustments in the afternoon and developed a rub. The bushing is suspect at best and I think the extra stress forced it's hand.

So I decided to upgrade my end links and upper control arms so adjustment would be a piece of cake. It sucks that I have to basically rebuild my rear end. It's for two specific issues. Let's start with the brake pad knock back. I had .020 and .023 axle end play with the Wilwood retaining plates. Well I have finally got Wilwood to admit there is a problem. There is no preload on the bearings and they have something in the works. (Where is my jack off symbol) Anyway, Currie makes a new retaining plate which you can see in the pics below. Way thicker and a larger lip to compress the bearing. After ripping apart my LR the Wilwood retainer was tweaked. I dont' baby this car but I'm disapointed. I insalled one axle and my end play is down to .006. Very nice.

I also started from scratch on my end links and upper control arms. I decided ot piece together the upper arms and make them stout and more adjustable. I sawed off the lowers, tapped the threads, and installed the new links. (It's more work than it looks like) I ended up repainting them since they had to be in the vice for cutting and tapping. Teh end links are kevlar/teflon mix. I want my **** bullet proof.

Denvervet 05-29-2009 09:30 PM

Nice job on the end links. I saw this coming and replaced mine with a Johnny joint. I had mine cut and threaded by a local machine shop for next to nothing:yes: . Did you have to remove the end bearing to get that retaining plate on? I'm going to be in the same boat soon and wondered what it takes to get those pressed bearings off.

Vegas69 05-29-2009 09:40 PM

It takes about $125. LOL If you haven't built your rear end, buy the plates from currie to start with. Scratch that, buy them anyway and press your bearings off and back on. They will need to install new retainer sleeves for the bearings.

tones2SS 05-30-2009 11:33 AM

Seriously Todd, you need to start doing pro-touring builds.
How do you know so much about this stuff? I wish I knew half of what you know. lol:lol:

70rs 05-30-2009 11:39 AM

i have never used anything like the g-bar so I have no idea how long those bushings should last.
Is that normal wear? I would think they would last longer than that.

2200 miles...normal wear? I would have to say no. They should last a long long time.

Vegas69 05-30-2009 01:17 PM

Thanks Tone...it's really just experience. I did get a 2 year degree in auto and was a line tech for a couple years. That was a good solid base where I'm pretty capable of anthing from bumper to bumper. Building these things is nothing like working on regular cars. It's all about tweaking and coming up with solutions that look good and work well. For me so far a lot of it has been fixing problems from parts manufacturers and other individuals. Some of the bugs have included:
  • Engine builder isntalled wrong distributor gear
    Intake leaked water external
G bar end links just aren't worthy of the track
    Wilwood brake caliper leak
    Wilwood retainer plate mis engineered
    Axle seal mis installation
Edelbrock water pump leaked out weep hole
1/2 height body bushings I wasn't aware of
Broke two oer emergency cables before I switched to lokar

I'm sure there were other issues. There have been things I've done that needed redesigned or tweaked as well.
  • Had to redesign the fuel system with about 5 miles on the car
Hooked up the rack backwards and blew out the seal(Assumed red was high pressure not yellow)
Had oil fitting leak at the remote oil filter mount needed tape instead of sealer
    Sure many more.

At the end of the day it's just little stuff and part of the game. I'm sure I've been much luckier than most. Not bitching one bit. Everybody that has actually touched the car did and awesome job...Prodigy Customs, Findlay Customs, ATS

70rs 05-30-2009 01:34 PM

Hi Todd,
For such an incredible car the list of issues does seem short. I can understand the frustration with having to re engineer parts. I have had to re engineer drawings from engineers in the construction arena. And I only installed the stuff. Some things look better on paper huh?

I agree with tone. Open a shop. "If you build it, they will come":D

bigtyme1 06-12-2009 08:33 PM

Hey Todd, did you get them shock plates made yet? Also what is you adjustment on the Varishocks Hieght?

Vegas69 06-12-2009 11:55 PM

The car is back on the ground. I'll have pics tomorrow or Sunday. Your going to need to adjust your coil overs about 25 times to dial it in. LOL

tones2SS 06-13-2009 07:57 AM

Sweet.
Can't wait to see it!

waynieZ 06-13-2009 12:11 PM

Nice work Todd ..

Vegas69 06-13-2009 01:13 PM

I have a little time before my race tonight so I thought I'd update my thread. After my last post race inspection I found a RR axle seal leak and had severe brake pad knock back on the track. I replaced both axle seals and while bleeding the rear brakes notices bubbles coming out between the RR caliiper halves. Frank at Prodigy and Wilwood were kind enough to warranty that caliper. To fix the pad knock back issue I had to press of and on the bearing for a plate with a larger lip. (Wilwood is designing a new plate now) I also tore up two of my upper link bushings and switched over to a kevlar/teflon end link which should get rid of the bind. That required re centering the rear end and setting the pinion angle. I aslo had some plates water jetted to move the coil over mount in 2 inches to clear my 18's and 19's. While I had the calipers off I figured it was time to put a short brake hose in the system so I can pull the calipers without bleeding the brakes.

So my Forgelines show up. Gorgeous....bolt them on and the front hit the caliper. Tried jet nuts, and a spacer and just wasn't happy with the clearance. So I made the decision to change to 13" rotors and now I have a ton of clearance for both wheels. Of course that meant swapping out the caliper studs and safety wiring the new rotors. I also had to recenter 3 calipers since I changed front rotors and a new rear caliper. The mounting pad is thicker on the forgelines so I had to put in longer studs. That required removing the hubs and I went to a 2.5 inch stud which meant I have to run open ended lug nuts. So I now have a 1/8 spacer for the forgelines out back and the fronts just bolt on. I can run eithe rset of wheels with plenty of clearance.

This all took about 6 weeks and a ton of work!

Here is a pictures of the new coil over mount. It has alot more clearance between teh bracket and wheel. (Picture makes them look close)
http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...1969/009-2.jpg

Here you can see the longer studs and smaller rotor. 14" rotors and an 18" step wheel don't mix real well. I needed to change rotors or go with a thicker pad on the wheel which meant less wheel lip. I never wanted 14" rotors in the first place and wanted to keep the lip.

Finally got her on the ground at 11:30 last night. We had friends over and I spent the whole night in the garage.

I know I already posted but man I love those wheels!

70rs 06-13-2009 06:33 PM

X2 camaro2nv. The wheels look great.
Glad to see it's on the road again Todd. Good luck today at the autoX!

Vegas69 06-13-2009 11:23 PM

It was a great night. The course was very technical and tight. The track surface was bumpy and loose. What a difference the race wheels made. The push was out of the car. Also happy to say the brakes were 100% better. The fastest sweeper the car stuck like glue. I ended up nosing out a new Viper and got beat by a Nissan Gtr by less than a second. The icing on the cake was there was a Mustang Super Snake at the event. He was slow but his buddy ask how much horse I had. I said 600. Well my buddy has 700. Cool....well I pull out on the interstate and guess who is in front of me. Up for the challenge we ran them up way into triple digits. Weak ass 700hp. I pulled him twice!:D :D Oh yeah...the old girl is a chick magnet. My old lady couldn't make it and I had 3 young ladies ask for a ride and I obliged.

89 RS 06-13-2009 11:29 PM

Todd, those wheels look sick. I think your car has a very sinister look to it now, looks awesome!

Tom.A 06-13-2009 11:45 PM

Looks killer Todd

tones2SS 06-14-2009 09:57 AM

OH MAN!!!
You're killing me Todd. Love that car, and not just because it's got a BBC in it neither!! lol And the new wheels look KILLER!
I'm glad it went well for you. I like the story about the Mustang dudes. lol
Keep up the great work. She's a real beauty!:hail:

Flash68 06-14-2009 11:24 AM

Good stuff man, but no pics of the 3 young ladies getting a ride = fail. :D

Was it one of the Eleanor replica Super Snakes or the late model version?

Vegas69 06-14-2009 11:36 AM

It was a brand new super snake from my understanding. Claimed 700hp and the top of the line super snake is 725hp. I have my doubts after racing him on the interstate. I was reading this morning that the 725hp super snake will run high 10's with slicks. However, it is 4100 lbs. All I know is I pulled him really well the first time u p to about 130 and the second time he got a little jump and I got him by a nose. He just disappeared in my rear view mirror after that. It was really fun and I'm glad I'm not locked up in the pokey.
The chicks just weren't that hot. haha I didn't look over the car real close but it resembled this http://www.shelbyautos.com/images/SSFlyer.pdf but was flat black.

Flash68 06-14-2009 11:40 AM

yeah I figured it was a late model version cuz those things run some very unimpressive times based on their claimed power, and yes they are behemoths of a car. Nothing like having an 800# or so weight advantage!

Nice kill. Just get a good radar like the V1. :D

Hey, not-hot chicks need lovin too.

Vegas69 06-14-2009 11:58 AM

I'll leave that up to you.:D It's been so long since I've had some strange that I probably wouldn't even get my zipper down.

I laugh only because I can relate.......

Glad to hear you smoked an over priced Ford. Nice work!

Vegas69 06-15-2009 09:59 PM

Here is a video of the track layout Saturday night. Super tight but fun. Those two 90 degree turns were a killer.
http://s88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...t=P6130011.flv

Vegas69 06-16-2009 08:26 AM

Found some video of my car....looks great until I get to the double 90 degree turns. The car was just a little low and I don't have much camber in it yet so it did limit my turning radius a little.
http://s694.photobucket.com/albums/v...t=MVI_4026.flv

The car I raced on the way home sure does have the super snake hood. http://s694.photobucket.com/albums/v...t=MVI_4017.flv

Todd, looked like you were moving pretty good. Cool video.:D Do you know what your average speed was?

waynieZ 06-16-2009 05:29 PM

Nice job Todd, It looks like it was fun..

slck6t9 06-16-2009 05:47 PM

Todd that was awesome. Your car definetly halls the mail...:hail:
