I'm coming back down on Friday -- they'll have the motor/trans installed and will have done the body drop... so it should be on the ground. I'm dying to see the stance with the wheels and tires... We couldn't get it as low as a '32 with a dropped straight axle so it won't be as BA as I'd ultimately like to have it but it'll be close. I was shooting for 4.5" ground clearance and I think we're more like 5".

Tony R --- We'll do lots of Beaches Wednesdays this summer! I'm going to try to wear this rod out this year....

Waynie --- This is kind of what these high end shops are known for... SAR loves to build custom trim..... and I'm no different than his other customers.... they show you something kool - and it becomes a "gotta have it". I have to say that the process (other than the check writing) has been a lot of fun. :woot:

waynieZ 04-19-2011 08:21 AM

Thats OK Greg. Even the check writing won't sting so much when your cruising around in this beauty.

HRBS 04-19-2011 09:41 AM

This is really turning into an "old guys" car. I mean..... when you "forget" where you parked..... all you need to do is look for the 32 with your last name all over it....

Lookin great Greg

That is one of the things SAR is really well known for. They have some real craftsmen that work there. Take a look at these 2 builds. They were using C5 corvette suspension on custom built chassis before anyone else was.

this one is my favorite they nailed the look and stance. All custom made trim work.

Wow Greg this is turning out super nice.

Really cool how they make those custom trim pieces.

I wish they had a "finger" icon.... 'cause I resemble that remark!

And you're right -- the ONE medallion on the front headlight spreader bar turned into a "well -- they have to cast more than one so what do you want to do with the others".... so we found homes for them. :D

GregWeld 04-19-2011 04:48 PM

Steve sent me a couple of better pics of the trimmed out windshield posts...

http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...d/DSC00576.jpg

And of course - the reason we did this was because the old windshield shape was ugly... but it was also custom built for THIS car.... so rather than build a whole new one - they cut the posts and reshaped them - and then it was decided to add the "art deco" touch. You know, "as long as we're at it"! :unibrow:

http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...d/DSC00580.jpg

OLD shape for comparison....

Trim pieces are killer. I believe you that it's a pricey process though.

Not that you're planning on selling...but you think the Weld "branding" will hurt resale value?

No.... 'cause all someone has to do is make their own replacements - or grind off the flat area where my name is.... and have 'em re-chromed.

When it's finally - if ever - comes for sale - I won't give a hoot anyway cause the resale value of this car is about $35K. Which is about my shop time for last weeks work.

JKnight 04-19-2011 05:02 PM

Makes sense. I wasn't really serious anyway. I know you couldn't give a flyin f about resale, more just a friendly dig ;)

The shape of the windscreen frame is much more...designed...looking than the old one, if that makes sense. Doesn't look like a grafted appendage.

tones2SS 04-19-2011 05:04 PM

Very, very nice Greg. I love the "little" touches to this rod. Lots of time and effort into it, as we can all see. Can't wait to see the finished product.

I know -- but it is a good question... and no... you're right - I could care less. I've always said - this is a HOBBY.... if you want to make money... get a day job. I've never made a dime on a car - or a house either for that matter. I always just do what turns me on -- and damn the torpedos.

I actually thought more about the personalization from an "ego" standpoint. Does it say -- this guy is a DB! And I really gave that a lot of thought. But I like the way they turned out so forged ahead. WTF. :willy: :D

I was real happy seeing it yesterday. It's tough to beat the quality of this shop... There's just nothing they can't pull off and they make it happen so quickly and simply that it makes it real fun. Decisions turn more on "what do you want to do" not - "oh that's going to be tricky" or whatever. They just make it happen.

This build is actually super simple compared to most of what they have going on.

Greg, "can I tell you something" you don't need badges for people to say "that guy is a DB!!"

Been consistantly working on the car lately, would really like to join you all at a few of these shows near the end of summer. Most excellent choice w/the Schott wheels Greg.

I just spent 2 hrs on their site looking at the completed projects. I'm not using any but how long before you have to go to the hospital with a viagra problem? No pills but same result. Pure Sex!

^^^^^^^^^ Oh gawd that's funny right there Wayne!

Seriously -- they have built some killer cars... the QUALITY is just top top notch. Actually -- I'd say they've never been given the kudos that they deserve. I don't think Steve is the "political type"... and we all know that some of this stuff is a little bit political. He's the super quiet type guy. I even have to ASK HIM to chime in with his thoughts and ideas. Now that we've worked together a bit - he will tell me I'm a dumbazz... but that took awhile. Usually it only takes most guys 10 seconds to get there! :D

The AMBER award this year went to the car "you'd most like to drive home".... had nothing to do with the fit and finish and paint and all the things that have always been part of the 'judging'... Not saying the winning car wasn't super top notch (they all are when they've entered the arena of these big time trophy hunts).

'Bout time buddy! Let's get out there and hammer that job done!

Time to CRUISE!

waynieZ 04-19-2011 09:50 PM

I thought of about 50 question's I would like answered on most of their builds, and I think I saw about 200 colors I'd like to paint my Camaro. Even the color silver they used on the trans on New Mad for my 6 spd.

That is the sign of a great shop. I bet you were really happy seeing in person yesterday. It does look great and those little touches add that "personal" touch.
The rod looks great on the chassis. Those wheels/wheel colors work well. That rear shot is still the best in my opinion.

waynieZ 04-20-2011 05:45 PM

Very Nice!

GregWeld 04-20-2011 07:46 PM

Yep - personally I think the stance sucks.... so the wheels will have to go. Unfortunately Schott doesn't make anything smaller than a 17" even though they made these 6.5" wide... the fronts don't allow enough drop in front for me.

SO.... I'll be wheel shoppin'

I'd like a set of Greg Weld's wheels.

But I'm not interested in a set of Greg Weld wheels.

GregWeld 04-20-2011 08:20 PM

Very comedic Skippers!

I've owned some sets of Greg Weld wheels and sometimes Greg Weld doesn't do so well with wheels... I was hoping I'd have the stance (we measured a million times) I was shooting for... and sometimes pics don't tell the whole story - but if this is the stance it's dead wrong. It's okay - these wheels will maybe work on the '37 Ford.... and if not - they can join the other sets up on the retaining wall behind the shed... There's several sets shod with various rubber just wasting away back there.:willy: :woot:

That's too bad about the wheels Greg.

You can just have a smaller dia made for the front.

I'm sure Shawn Dove would be happy... er, willing to cut you a set of wheels that have Weld logo spokes. You could even get a set of matching Weld logo center caps.

oh, and I might add, the suspension is looking nice under the car!

Matt

PM your address! I'll pay the shipping.

GregWeld 04-21-2011 09:48 AM

I was told to wait to make a judgement until I see the car tomorrow....

By the way -- the reason I did the little bit of 'bling' in the wheel was to tie into the polished stainless lake style header... The wheel in all "cast look" didn't tie into anything else on the car - and maybe I made a mistake not just doing them all polished. But I'll hold my final judgement until we get it all together.

Greg I dunno...I think those fronts won't look as "big" in diameter, once you have the grille shell, and the rest of the "stuff" on the front of the car, to kind of establish the profile.
