Hate to say it, but that car you raced wasn't a Super Snake. I've got an 06 Mustang, as well as a Camaro, (I don't discriminate with muscle cars) and have wasted quite a few hours getting to know Mustangs, before really getting into pro-touring. In the video you posted, the car looked like a regular GT with a Roush body kit, and maybe a blower, from the sound of it at the end. Unless he's got forged internals, I doubt he's putting down more than 450rwhp, which explains why you blew past him. Hey, he probably felt emasculated by that sinister looking 69 of yours and had to say something
BTW you really make wish I'd gotten brushed hoops and my forgeline ZX3s, the new wheels look killer Matt |
Thanks guys! Your right Matt it wasn't a super snake. I found out it's an 07 GT with the body kit. However, it has been turned into a stroker with a turbo.
|
I just watched the video Todd, the car looks like it ran awesome! In the vid it looks like there is about ZERO body roll. How is the ride on the street with the current set up? Nice work on the track!
|
Really nice actually. I have the front shocks as stiff as they will go and it still rides nice. The back has 16 positions and I run it at about 12 on the track. I dial it all the way back to 3-4 and it rides really plush. The last two times I autocrossed I got about 2 miles and pulled over and crawled underneath the rear for a few seconds and on my way.

yeah thats a big part of the DSE sub and g-bar that amazes me, the way todds car rides on the streets.
with how nice and comfortable the suspension is on the streets you'd NEVER expect it to react the way it does when its put to the test... :unibrow: :unibrow: and thats one of the big differences with just using a stock sub and great leaf springs, yes youll be able to hang with the 4/3 linkswith aftermarket subs on the track but to do that you have to sacrifice ride quality on the streets:( i just look at it like if ya got the money the deff. go with 4/3link with a aftermarket sub. todd i gotta come see the race look in person soon! |
It sounds like a really cool set up Todd. I'll have to go back through my suspension after I get it on the road and do some better upgrades. For now it will be upgraded leafs and everything in front but the stock sub. Down the road I hope to be able to do a trick rear set up. For now the drivetrain is eating up a big chunk of the budget. I spoke to Jason Rushforth today and got my wheel choice figured out and am working on the brake package.
Rushforth Rated X 20x10 rear and 19x8 fronts with black centers and polished lip. 285/35/20 and 245/40/19 tires. Can you guys suggest a good street tire that will stick in dry weather but at cooler temps than you have down in Nevada? Thanks, Eric |

I'd just go with the R888's and call it a day. If I had it to do all over again that's exactly what I would do. I haven't driven the car in sub 75-80 degree temps but it really has nice grip even when the tires aren't warm. Bad news is they don't make them in a 20". I wouldn't run that big a wheel if you plan on racing the car at all. And I don't care what the new ZR1 has on it. |
It won't be "raced". Maybe a couple of open track days at most. It's being built to run on the street and have fun with. There is a fair amount of rice grinders around here that I want to play with. Just out of curiousity why would you not run 20's if it were to be raced?
|
Lack of sidewall and r compounds. I was once at your stage. I didn't think I'd race mine much either. Now that's all I care about. lol If you race it and your hooked your stuck with 2 sets of expensive wheels. (Ask me how I know) Now is the time to decide if your willing to take that chance. Personally I'd go with a 19/18 stagger since many performance tires are available. I get pulled over everytime I drive the damn thing on the street. I have the traffic ticket guy on speed dial and I'm on his Christmas list.
|
What you're saying makes good sense Todd. I'll have to re think my wheel sizes. I didn't realize there was such a limited range of tires in the 20" size. A 18/19 stagger would still look great and give me a bit more sidewall and a broader choice of tires too. Once again Todd, you have given me some great advice. Thanks.
As for the getting pulled over, I have a couple of friends in the city P.D. and a couple more who work for the county sherrif dept. I met them while I was out tearing it up on my bike. Now we are great friends. My wife is my insurance agant, if I get any more tickets I am effed!:D |

Project number 1,028:D
Venting a rear end and fuel tank on a 69 Camaro is very difficult. I should say it's very difficult if you want to vent your fuel system correctly without vapor lock or overheating the pump. I've been running K&N's for both as high as I could get them which wasn't good enough and I knew it. I know I was losing some gas at a little grease. Of course autocross and plans to road course really forced my hand. Plus at no miles per gallon it's not fun losing a few ounces here and there. So anyway, I designed a venting system for both the rear end and fuel tank. I was very important to me that I kept my 8 an vent. Your fuel vent is supposed to be equal to your feed line and I wasn't going to compromise. I picked up a couple plan jane coolant overflow tanks and tapped them for 3/8 npt top and bottom, the rear end tank got tapped 1/4 npt since I used 6 an for it. I ran all AN fittings, bulhead through the trunk, then vented the tank at the top through grommets into a 1/2 and 3/8 K&N. This will hopefully allow me to top off the tank with no spillage and I'll have a quart capacity in the overflow tanks. The gas tank and rear end are well below these tanks so it should solve any spillage and it look pretty damn cool too. I even used the leaf spring shackle bushing hole for support. That's really a pretty tight spot between the frame rail and quarter, it looks large in the photo. Just to give you a feel those K&N filters are 4 inches across together. Probably have about 10-15 hours in design, fabrication, and assembly. http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...uelVent001.jpg http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...uelVent008.jpg http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...uelVent009.jpg |
It looks like it turned out very nice Todd. Have you had a chance to "test" it out on the local twisties yet?
I hope it works as good as it looks. You mention "no miles per gallon". Have you had a chance to figure out average MPG yet? |
Looks nice Todd! Do you have any fuel smell in the garage (while parked)? That is one thing I'm needing to avoid!!
|
I only checked the fuel mileage once on a cruise out of town a ways and got 10mpg. That was highway. :_paranoid I've never really got a strong fuel smell Anthony. I did use hard line the length of the car where the fuel probably sits the most.
|
Wow Todd that is some nice clean work. Like a professional.
|
That looks like a nice setup nice and neat..

Ever since I mounted up my Forgelines I've had a pull to the right. I've been meaning to add some negative camber to the car since it was set up at a conservative .5 on both sides. Somehow I now had R.375 and L.75 degrees on negative camber. Clearly the almost .5 degrees is the problem. I haven't got out and bought that swamp cooler yet, so I've been spending more time talking about cars than driving and working. I decided to head out there tonight and play with my new bubble gauges and toe plates. I had the camber set at 1 degree per side in like 10 minutes. I have 3/16 toe out currently which is a probably a little to much. I'll save that for another rodeo. Took her out for a 30 mile cruise and she drives beautiful and straight again. The extra turning radius is a bonus. I'll probably lift the front a hair when I reset the toe.

thats a cool alignment gauge...its simple and looks to be a much better option than the spc one. i really just wanna do my own alignment since we dont really have manys options for shops out here.
|
I can get different hub adapters for it as well. I ended up getting it from a race shop downtown. They were nice enough to change out the adapter to fit a corvette at no charge.

Todd, how is the new venting system working out? |
I'm definitely getting better gas mileage. However, when I park after a drive and the tank releases pressure it will piss a little. I'm going to try a vented cap and if that doesn't do it, I'll rerun the vent hose with two loops in it. It is alot better than the old setup. The rearend vent works perfect.

no one to shoot the car here in vegas... |
I haven't exactly been sending photos to magazines begging. Steve said he'll shoot it and I told him there was no hurry. The car isn't going anywhere. The car only gets better and better.

Thanks.... I spent the better part of yesterday afternoon trying out Zaino. It's labor intensive but the car really turned out nice. It's looking just as shiny or shinier than ever. I also had some clear bra installed behind both wheels up to the body line for protection with the R888's. Went out this morning for breakfast and a run around the lake. I haven't had a chance to shoot any decent photos since the wheel change. I need to add a couple loops to my new venting system as you can see. It doesn't seem to leak while running since a vaccum is being pulled on the tank as fuel is consumed. I knocked down 9 miles per gallon city/highway. You can also see the new gbar coilover mount setup. I ended up adding a third bolt for safety and looks.
Here are my two ladies. http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...keAug09023.jpg http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...keAug09032.jpg http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...keAug09004.jpg http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...keAug09011.jpg http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...keAug09018.jpg |
Looking great Todd! Is everything going well with the new brake swap? I know that was a while ago but I had not heard anything on it.
|
Yeah, that's bad ass!! I love that you keep tinkering and making it better and better!!
|
Wow :wow: the thing is glowing more than ever!!
I know Aj is a big fan of Zanio and has used it. What are your thoughts? Is it worth the effort, how many hours did it take you to do the entire car. Also how is that clear bra stuff holding with those rock throwing monsters you have on the back end of that power house? Now that the weather has cooled a tad I think I need to twist your arm and get you to take me for a ride. :unibrow: |
The brakes still have a little knockback, but it's managable. It's barely noticable on the street.
The Zaino is really a pain in the ass. I spent about 4-5 hours on the car. The polish that I first used called the z5 is supposed to fill in minor imperfections and light scratches. After the first application, the shine was very noticable. I then reapplied it and finished with the z2. I really can't say I noticed any extra shine after the final two applications. The z2 is supposed to be the last step and it has sunblock. The z2 was also very hard to get off compared to the z5. We'll definitely have to get out for a ride. I have a race coming up on August 23rd in Primm. The car really isn't finished. I still need to add the AC and something for the Ipod. I'll also be adding an accumulator, oil cooler, and possibly a 2 pass radiator soon. I think the tweaking part of the build is my favorite. At the end of the day, it's a custom build and it takes miles to make them reliable enough for the street, let alone the track. |
