It does suck, but it is what it is and happens to the best of us (Doug) and the worst of us (me). :sieg: |
With respect to the replies you and Dave gave, class act as Todd said. Always look forward to seeing the changes for you Camaro.

Well said. I'm glad the car is going to get finished. I only asked the question about the photos as I've just fitted my torque arm rear in my 69 and my diff is hard up to underside of the crossmember. I want it to be sitting quite low so wanted to pinch a few ideas that had been done to yours. Hope that's ok.
Cheers Luke |

Posting an update to my dead thread, because I finally have a legitimate one.
I purchased a motor for the car from a member here, and in typical fashion for me, it was an unbelievable deal. I am still sticking with the one modification at a time plan, and putting the pieces together slowly over time to put in my DSE front subframe--but when I make this mod, I will rewire the car at that time along with a couple other things, including installing the latest acquisition. http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/u..._201559033.jpg http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/u..._201759248.jpg http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/u..._201204895.jpg |
Nice lookin' engine there Doug. The LS motor is going to look right at home in your engine compartment. I'm still diggin' you're one mod at a time philosophy, good stuff.
|
Nice score! Glad you're still plugging away at the car, Doug.

I always knew you were smarter than Gordon.

And, of course, if it's on an engine stand in the garage, why not pull it apart to check it out.
I wanted to verify parts from the list to ensure crank, cam, rods, pistons, etc all checked out to spec's. Thus far, all is very well internally with the motor--Pistons are Wiseco forged/coated blower specific, rods are legit, etc.. My plan now is to stud the heads and mains here at the house, and give the heads a once over since I may be pulley this motor for some additional boost. This motor had about 400 miles or so on it. To that end, I pulled the heads and have them over at the FUEL GOD here in So Cal, Bob McCray. He is verifying the previous work done to them; double checking valves are what they are supposed to be from build sheet, porting and bowl work is legit, springs for height, valve job, etc., then do some flow checking for me. Hopefully I can start putting this back together in the next week or so. http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/u...250435_HDR.jpg http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/u...616702_HDR.jpg http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/u..._182717359.jpg So far, the LS is pure joy to work with--except for all the metric crap. It's way easier than the SBC I was used to dealing with. BW |

Some guy on the interwebs around here (who claims he has some quasi NASCAR connections) sez that them LS'sss are a lot tougher to work on than them SBtoos. Nevertheless, yer budget setup is lookin' good BiggDubU. :hello: |

That is one sweet engine you picked up. Like the direction you are going with the build.

I just wasn't thinking I would be reaching into my metric tools to take the motor apart---good thing I had them. :ohsnap: |

If you need someone to hold beer as you put that engine and subframe in, let me know. I'd be happy to help!

Time for me to post a few more legitimate updates on the progress of the new motor for the car.
So, after I got the heads pulled off, there were several items I decided to upgrade. Starting with putting in head studs. I purchased the ARP thread chaser and started in http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/u...nstall/252.jpg I followed the process of chasing the threads, pulled the chaser out, blew it off with compressed air, then chased the threads again. Upon the second chase, there was very little material showing up on the chaser. I would then use the compressed air to clean out the threads inside the block, followed by filling up that hole with carb cleaner, letting it sit while I chased the others, then blew it out upon completion, followed by one last chase and blow out. After inspecting each one, they were indeed free from any material. http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/u...nstall/253.jpg Below is what the chaser looked like after each first pass. There is some form of factory Loctite or sealer on the stock head bolts. It's crucial per ARP to ensure you have all of this cleaned out before installing the head studs. http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/u...nstall/259.jpg http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/u...nstall/258.jpg http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/u...nstall/260.jpg After ensuring all was clear, I went ahead and began the actual head stud install. I've got the Part Number here for anyone who decides to do the same. http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/u...nstall/254.jpg http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/u...nstall/255.jpg |
The kit includes both the small and large studs for each side along with their proprietary assembly lube.
http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/u...nstall/256.jpg Per the instructions, and just like on the SBC in the race car, just put them in hand tight--but ensure they are run all the way down. http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/u...nstall/257.jpg I did a lot of asking, and after speaking with a couple of friends, in addition to several shops--the LS9 GM gaskets were the best choice for me. These are 9 layer MLS type gaskets, which two friends are running right now, respectively, in a 416 TT & and a 427 with a Pro Charger making well over 1200---for more than 2 years. Always nice when you can get real input from folks actually using the stuff you are considering. So, anyways, these went in place. http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/u...nstall/261.jpg These are clearly marked in terms of orientation. http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/u...nstall/262.jpg |
So, after inspection, the heads had not been touched in terms of porting, and had a poor valve job done to them.
The good news, they did have Inconel Exhaust Valves and a good set of Manley Valve Springs. So, I went ahead and had them blown apart for inspection. We blended the bowls, new valve job, changed out the intake valves for some Manley's, and checked the spring heights. One intake was missing the shims under the spring--it's like the builder just forgot about it. Anyways, they are setup now as they should be in my opinion. http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/u...nstall/263.jpg Here are couple of shots to show the light bowl blending on both the intake and exhaust ports. These heads flow pretty impressive numbers right out of the gate. With the valve job and bowl blending, we picked up about 30 additional cfm. http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/u...nstall/265.jpg http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/u...nstall/264.jpg |
