Wow, nice mann rigg Payton!

That's why yer still the King.

:thankyou:

Good Stuff Payton! That's a whole lot of truck, you'll need a step stool to get in that thing! Just signed up for the USCA event in Charlotte in July, I'm sure I'll see you there!

srh3trinity 03-28-2015 10:36 AM

So where does the GoPro mount for the rear suspension? I want to see it in action. Cool stuff and one of these days I want to dig deeper into the tech stuff.

WSSix 03-28-2015 11:08 AM

Nice truck Payton!

Thanks for explaining the fuel cell guys. Appreciate the lesson.

waynieZ 03-28-2015 12:24 PM

Sweet Tow Rig Payton!! That is some serious suspension tech right there, and very interesting. Looking good !

And don't forget the surge tank that sits inside in the middle/rear (shown on that PDF link).

The angle would have been too acute to add much support. Hard to see from the photos.

Sieg, it is a 6 inch lift for the truck....a 3 inch lift for me.

Mills, will see you out there.

Wife is not digging it too much since she will need to drive it some to haul the kids around.

Hahaha, years ago when my dad was racing circle track cars on a budget, my mom was stuck driving to work in the truck he used to haul the trailer. When you need a decent towing rig sometimes it's hard to swing paying for it without using it as a regular vehicle also. Unless your Weld. I'm pretty sure she's still pissed about having to drive a 1 ton crew cab dually everywhere instead of a little car. Sometimes things are a compromise.

Payton King 03-30-2015 01:45 PM

She is not suffering too much as she drives a convertible. I did offer to sell her car and get her a minivan.

My boys are 15 and 12.

rixtrix1 04-02-2015 12:01 AM

I have planned on doing the offset 3-link, watts on my '66 Malibu, but this makes so much sense it's crazy. I've seen something similar to the link parts listed in the Speedway catalog, but never the two way fitting at the rear axle. Sooo, where does one get this stuff?

Payton King 04-02-2015 06:18 AM

All of that stuff came from Ron Sutton. He calculated offset of links, heights of both the accel and decel links, etc. I ordered it from him. There is similar stuff in other racing retailers parts books, but the suspension design service and racing expertise has me giving my money to Ron.

Payton King 04-02-2015 06:36 AM

While the chassis stuff is coming along, we have also been getting the motor ready for assembly. After Jim made the motor plate, I took it to Ed to get my water and oil lines together.

The water pump I am using takes an o-ring and snap ring for the lines to the block.

http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...pssiivcctu.jpg

From each side of the water pump water goes to the side of the block. Water also enters the block from the front just like a normal small block. My motor also has spark plug cooling so there are 3 ports on each head.

http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...psbhmlyvtx.jpg

After the water lines were complete, we loaded up the motor and mocked it up in the car to get the layout of the oil lines. Because we moved the oil pump to the right side, we will need to run the lines around the front of the motor.

Check out how much material has been removed from the back of the block. This was the way a lightened block comes from Brodix.

Payton King 04-02-2015 06:46 AM

Not much room to work with for the 2 oil lines that need to pass to the right side. They will run behind the rack and below the ballancer.

The scavenge line running fom the lifter valley was tricky. Ed machined a spot in the block for the line to pass through.

and to the pump

Payton King 04-02-2015 06:57 AM

One of 3 scavenge lines from the pan.

http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...psutkknxjm.jpg

The motor made a trip to Brown & Miller for the other 2 lines.

The other line that you see in the above picture going into the pan is for the piston oilers.

No. Not unless the guys at Cortex measure his subframe and find it was built with a couple extra inches of wheelbase.

LS7 Z/28 04-02-2015 07:40 AM

Having the word "grenade" written on your intake seems like a bad omen.

Payton King 04-02-2015 09:32 AM

Dave's motor and mine are about the same minus my Aluminum block. His actually runs and mine is an empty shell. Pistons did come in last week though, so I am not far behind.

I am the only guy with extra inches...in the wheelbase department.

Did not notice the "grenade" until I posted the pictures. Motor guy, Ed Lesley, his shop is called Grenade Engines. Funny stuff.

Potentially, yes. :secret:

That would be a game ender at this point.

Grenade... heh... I always thought that too.

Ed is a good dude... got a bunch of my dry sump parts and accessories from him. Payton should be in good hands there.

We are Carolina cousins (I think that means married or something?)

I do envy your alum block, shorter stroke and EFI.... gonna be very cool.

What kind fittings/clamps are those where the braided line meets hard line?

Flash has socks that match them.

Dave's car had me at the Ford stripes, but this one keeps pulling me back in with its aluminum block, short(er) stroke goodness, not to mention all the Brown and Miller stuff!

bonecrrusher 04-17-2015 04:38 AM

Nice Bro Truck! Hahah.

Where the skulls done by a previous owner?

That truck doesn't look like it will fit in your garage - my Duramax 2500 barely fits in mine.

Love the updates to the Camaro - we going to get a chance to see engine dyno vids anytime soon? What kind of EFI are you using - the TB based Holley unit?

Payton King 04-17-2015 06:38 AM

Yes, all the custom work was done by the previous owner. Frank Garcia, who was the center for the Carolina Panthers.

No way is that truck fitting in my garage. Top of the roof is 7'2"

Pistons and rings just came in so all I need is head studs and a cam. Motor vids are a few months away. Have not decided on an injection system, either AEM or Holley. May have a line on a throttle body off of an RO7.

What amazes me is I will be running an LS firing order and we called Comp cams. They have 50mm, SB2 cam blanks with an LS firing order sitting on the shelf. Just need to come up with specs to have it ground.

http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...psda1ysj0p.jpg

Graham08 04-17-2015 07:31 AM

Very cool build! I've been following this for quite a while, just haven't commented yet.

Is the LS firing order the same thing as a 4-7 swap for a 1st Gen SBC? If that's the case, it doesn't shock me that they have the blanks on the shelf. It's pretty common for race engines, both SBC and BBC.

On edit: I see it's not the same. It's a 4-7 and 2-3 swap relative to the 1st Gen engines. That is interesting the blanks were on the shelf.

Payton King 04-17-2015 10:38 AM

I was doing it mostly for the type of electtonics I was originally going to run, but later found out it is good for about 5 HP. Not that I need 5 more HP but all the serious guys do. I think the RO7 runs that same order.

seancarole 04-17-2015 09:24 PM

I'm going to lose sleep waiting to see the finished product. This thing is insane.

Beach Cruiser 06-10-2015 08:43 AM

Wow, I missed the engine pages, that thing is going to be insane! Good thing you're in NASCAR country because you ain't getting any replacement parts from AutoZone if something breaks.

Payton King 06-10-2015 12:24 PM

It is going to be on the edge for sure. Pistons were made with the wrong pin height, not our fault, so they are making a new set. 6 to 8 weeks which translates into 3 to 4 months.

Payton King 06-10-2015 12:39 PM

Now that this thread got brought back up, I need to update.

The watts mount was too low to the station tubes. We cut it out, modified it and added the trick adjuster so we can make fine changes instead of an inch at a time like it was before.
