Then it was time to get the heads torqued down.
ARP says to put their assembly lube on the threads, both sides of the washers, and the bottom side of each nut. http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/u...nstall/266.jpg http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/u...nstall/268.jpg http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/u...nstall/267.jpg Once that's done, it's time to start the torque sequence. ARP calls for 80 pds on the large studs and 25 on small ones, done in a series of 3 steps. I started the large studs at 28, then moved to 56, then finally to 80. The smaller, I started at 8, then 16, then finally 25. http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/u...nstall/271.jpg Using the following torque sequence obtained from Lingenfelter, I began the process. http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/u...nstall/270.jpg http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/u...nstall/269.jpg http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/u...nstall/273.jpg http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/u...nstall/272.jpg And, after about two hours, the finished product. http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/u...nstall/274.jpg |
What I know about engine building just tripled. Well done. Thanks for the info brother.

Good job picking up Todd's slack. :peepwall:

Looks good Doug. You certainly catered to the picture whores on this site. Probably could of got that job done in 1 hour if you didn't have to take so many pics :mock:
But since I'm sitting here at work, avoiding doing any work, I appreciate it. Are you going to have the motor dyno tuned on the stand or wait until its in the car? |
Big Dub,
Now that is a "legitimate" update. Some people just post dyno results from nearly 2 years ago. lol |

Plan is to get it to engine dyno first. That way, if there's any obvious issues, I can deal with it before motor goes in---plus I know the tuneup in the motor is close at that point--although I know it will need some additional tuning once in the car for drivability, etc. If it's going to leak water or oil, I hope it will do it on the engine stand dyno. Make sure you watch Karate Kid a couple times -- so you get the "wax on, wax off" detail right. |

Atta boy... It'll smoke Gordon and knock down 20 mpg.

Thanks for being the poster child for "what to do when buying a used motor." When you spend that kind of coin you really need to check everything regardless of who built it...valve spring and heads prove it!
Hurry up and get that bitch on the road, I want to be the only one left on jack stands...a man has to have a goal. |

Wanted to show you guys a couple of pics of the Improved Racing Sump and Crank Scraper that I installed in the LS3 oil pan.
I had heard quite a few guys on the vette forum who recommended these for greater oil control for those who were road coursing or frequenting larger auto crosses. It was 300 bucks, and came with new oil pan gasket, new oil pump ring gasket, the crank scraper, and finally the sump/trap door setup. Here are a few pics of the install. Here is the factory windage tray after pulling off the pan and the oil pump pickup tube. Ready for Crank Scraper Drop it over the studs and start measuring for clearance. I.R. calls for .020 to .060 of clearance to the crankshaft. It is clearly marked for orientation, and install is fairly straightforward. Since this motor has aftermarket Crank, Rods & Bolts, I had a fair amount of filing/grinding on the crank scraper to achieve the necessary clearance. After everything was clearanced, I went ahead installed the sump and torqued down the studs for the final time. Ready for the pan install. |
YOU DA MAN! LOOKING GOOD!!

It looks like a sweet setup.
