That is a cool deal

Ron loves his and you can surely bang gears quickly. Jake has one in his AIX car and Vinnie is running one now as well.

Hey Payton -- yep, all 3 of those guys you mention I contacted about their experiences and advice with this trans. It's not a very long list of people running them that I could find anyway.

Jake actually runs a Jerico if I recall, but pretty much the same deal.

That's a nice write up on different options available in transmissions, a much more thorough explanation than mine.

I've ridden (but never driven) in race cars with dog change/helical cut trannys, the noise of a proper shift is pretty incredible. I'm interested to see what you think. I understand it can be an expensive learning curve to drive dog change properly...but maybe cheaper than replacing Muncies. ;)

I agree, and I hope to get in there and learn quickly. Everyone I have talked to says shift it like you mean every... single... time. Sounds fun and hopefully not harder than it sounds. I think getting the footwork down will be the hardest part since it will be so counterintuitive.

But yes, either way... no more Muncies. :)

It seems we now have "Garage" acsess for Buttonwillow, so we will be bringing the icechest, Weber, and "Carmen Electra" cut-out :unibrow: Oh ya, and tire pressure gauge.

All those items your bringing so far sound great, But if you dont have a car to fill it with you'll need the Karioki Box so we can use the rest of the space as a dance floor

In other words, WHATS UP WITH THE NEW TRANS INSTALL!!

Waiting on a clutch disc to arrive... then it's on. Just decided (and confirmed I am within spec) to go with the Centerforce LMC (light metal clutch) disc and use my existing RAM pressure plate and alum flywheel. Gotta love mixing and matching parts. :D

Got some more serious safety gear (all nomex SFI 5 stuff) ordered this weekend, as well as the rest of the oil cooling system I finally decided on. Will get started on that by next weekend. I've really started to think about safety more lately and try to incorporate that into every potential upgrade or mod.

And another Dog Ring trans expert sent me this bad ass video of a Jerico'd GT350R @ Road America... :captain:

GregWeld 07-31-2011 08:00 PM

Let us know when you're that smooth.... :D

That is a sweet video - I was mesmerized watching it.

Like Greg has alot of room to scoff

Glad to hear things are coming along. I remember that I called Center Force and they sent me a recommended clutch disk. Either eway, I always show up loaded with tools and extra parts so hopefully all goes well in September.

Ron in SoCal 07-31-2011 09:57 PM

Man Dave that vid is sick. Good luck getting that footwork/rev matching down. As sarcastic as that sounded and I usually am, I really mean it. How bad a** would that be on the road course?

Chad-1stGen 08-01-2011 09:29 AM

Sweet vid Dave. Can't wait to see you in action with the new trans!

Yeah I think it might take a couple trips around the block to get that down.

Mesmerized... you and me both!

Yeah I talked a bit with both RAM and Centerforce and really liked their road racing intended LMC disc... it is meant to work with their LMC pressure plate, but with the pressure plate an extra $500 and the one I have looking fine, I just ordered the disc. We confirmed measurements so they said it should be fine.

I hope all goes well in Sept too.

Yeah 1st day at BW I hope to really get things down. A full day is a lot of time to get your coordination together. Maybe by 2nd day I can get a good rhythm going. I will say it looks easier to me than mastering rev matching with the traditional heel-toe clutch method. We'll see!

I used to run Buttonwillow on my bike, love that track! We even ran it forward and backwards one weekend, everything I learned the first day, forget it! Have a blast.

Very nice Steve. We are running it CW one day and CCW the other so know learning for day 2 for us either. It will be a blast I am sure. :woot:

I was a little disappointed to see the guys running in the school group would be going CCW the next day. To learn the line in the CW direction one day and then change it up the next day?

Either way, should be a good time. Just sayin'.............

"Reverse engineering". A great saying for completely dismantiling a perfectly good racecar. Dude, we got some work to do.....:brix:

Very cool video. I would like to see a full "in cab" view of the driver. To be able to watch the steering and shifting all going on at the same time.

There was another dash cam video with rpm/mph/gear/g force.... From inside a 69z. The shifting was going on above 8,000 rpm much of the time. That driver did not seem to be as smooth through the corners as the mustang driver. Fun to watch any of those.
Its at the bottom of the screen after the mustang video ends

Shoulda linked it! Gonna go look for it now lol

EDIT: Found one with a 67 Z28. OMG that guy winds that poor motor out so hard

More like, (Dave's voice) "Hey Rich, while we're changing out the tranny and modding the clutch, why don't we tear out the interior, dash, do some wiring, put some of that noise/heat sticky stuff in cause you know how comfy I like to be at the track and, oh yeah got any spare aluminum laying around you could trim up for those X brace thingys near the back seats? I'm off to get some beer and I'll be back in the morning. Think you'll have it done?"

Ya know, you'd normally be sorta right on that, but in this case I actually did most of the "demo" myself... I mean, it's a lot easier to knock something down than build it up right?

A good way to learn how something gets installed or goes together is to take it apart I hear. We'll see when it's time to put it back in... or leave it out in this case as part of our "race weight" strategic plan. :unibrow:

Tell me about it... flavored water..... but I don't think Rich, or anyone, would be very productive after 15 of the beers I like to drink. :D

We made some progress on the various projects to get ready for Buttonwillow next month. I wish I could just leave the shift rods exposed.

Uh your last update wasn't showing how you put in sound deadener was it? Hopefully that was already there. Otherwise, I can speak from experience that doing things twice isn't the ideal way :)

Haha NO thank god... we pulled out the carpet for the tunnel work, and to pull up a sh!tload of that jute crap!

Lotsa of little things going on right now with the car, but I am focused on getting the big stuff done so we can make Buttonwillow!!

Flash68 08-21-2011 12:18 PM

Well I had another inspiring day watching the Trans Am series run at Monterey Historics yesterday at Laguna Seca. Cannot believe I've never gone to that before and it's right here within 2 hours of me. Will be an annual event moving forward for sure.

Got many more ideas and function/form cues from these cars that I will be incorporating. The beauty of these cars to me is that they are so darn simple yet effective and proven. Add some newer technology and I think you've got a great combo.

I shoulda brought my GoPro and took some vid, but this iphone vid captures the sound nicely I think. :D
