Personally.... I have the maturity of a sophomore in high school... and prefer the smoke and screeching tires and wubba flying. :unibrow:

Nice job Mark! Amazing difference!

Gordon got some really nice shots there too!

Dumb question for everyone

Not intended to highjack thread but I'm sure there are many novices, (like me), reading this build thread and some might have this question:

How would the elimination of the 4 point roll bar affect the chassis, (specifically first gen Camaro)?

I'm very interested to know if this is a must have to keep car from twisting. In your opinion, would it be useless to spend the money on subframe and aftermarket rear suspension and not add a roll bar?

I have two boys under 5 that I'd like to share this hobby with and would like to weigh out options. I'm 80% certain I'd rather be able to put them in the back seat without a roll bar versus having a two seat Camaro that gains the last x% of performance.

You can always have a removable cross bar for the times you are street cruisin'.

Or maybe you don't need 800 some odd ft-lbs of torque and therefore also not the cage?

Mark

I know this is a really old post...but it's the first time I got to go through it. Did you know that you can simply buy all the fittings already black hard anodized from XRP? :)

Great build thread! The car looked and performed awesome out at OUSCI, but you don't need me to tell you that. I thought this car was named "The Hack"? :)

Did this car ever see a chassis dyno in the current tune ? Probably a dumb question because I can't imagine it hasn't been posted on this thread. Would be interesting to see the comparison to the engine dyno.

Good points about the engine and leaks. I thought I was the only one. Always finding little (and not so little drips) here and there. Always thought braided hoses and AN fittings were the bomb but now I"m finding that most of them end up leaking a bit too. Usually around the hose/joint interface, or I suspect on the swivel fittings maybe the swivel area, hard to say, you can clean it up and idle and driveway rev it all day long - no leaks. Street drive, mild leaks. Track drive - messy leaks. I couldn't afford it during buildup, but slowly I'm replacing my hand built hoses with pro-crimped style. Saves weight too.

With the latest artivcle from Hot Rod on the PTFE hoses I'm trying to figure out which ones are teflon as well. The Aeroquip startlite stuff is still rubber hose. My fuel is all teflon but its the old style stiff teflon stuff.

Anyway don't want to hijack into a hose topic, just letting you know I appreciate your excitement about a leak free motor.

Really nice wheel Mark! A combination look of my favorite wheels - Forgeline WC3 and a Fikse style center. Prices look good too!

Top notch as always Mark!

Mark - Did you run ceramic brakes on this car or just Jackass? If so what parking brake mechanism did you use for the rear corvette brakes? I have a project I'm working on to combine that currently.

Thanks

I ran iron rotors on Red Devil vs. Jackass. The main reason was ABS calibration with iron rotors vs. carbon fiber. The carbon fiber rotors require a unique ABS calibration. I'm working on sorting out the carbon rotor ABS issue. The carbon rotors can be a bit touchy at the limit for tire lock-up.

For the parking brake I used Baer racing stuff modified to use the Corvette brakes.

I'm building some new stuff for resolve some ABS sensor issues and a more robust park break system.

If it works I'll post some photos soon.

I have sent the math data to the machine shop and I should have parts soon.

Mark is it a heat issue with the carbon rotors for the ABS???

The characteristic of the carbon brakes are a lot differernt from the iron rotor system. As the carbon brakes get hotter they gain output to a point. Once iron rotors get warm there output goes down as they get hotter. The ABS calibration is unique for the ZR-1 with carbon brakes and the controller is made by Bosch. I used a Delphi controller on Red Devil and could not sort out the Bosch system yet. My system was optimized around the iron rotors of the stock Z06 system. I'm working on sorting out the carbon brakes better. They work great on Jackass and on Polly's car at the OUSCI. It just takes a slighly different technique (talent) to drive them with out ABS.

Hey I stopped by your car a couple times over the weekend at the Detroit Autorama but never caught up with you. I did buy a copy of your book...very cool!
Hopefully I will see you at some Goodguys shows over the year with my "Project Nasty" 69 Mustang.

Thanx Mark!! I'll be watching for updates. I would love to use ABS with my ZR-1 brake setup...

vetteduck 03-11-2011 10:52 AM

Pumped to watch the coverage on SPEED tonight of the Optima Ultimate Street Car Invitational, the Red Witch is just a fantastic build from so many standpoints. Ever since I've started reading about Stielow's latest build in magazines and now in this thread, I've been curious as to where the track tow hook was sourced. I've searched the web and found few instances of 1st gen Camaros with tow hooks installed, and it appears to be a custom set up. I want to put one on my 68 and unfortunately, as with the rest of my build so far l rely on seeing what other's have done that I like. Essentially I'd like to copy cat a tow hook set-up, but so far this is the best example I've seen of one on a 1st gen. Anyone have any thoughts on the matter?
Once again, great build! Once I found this thread I was online for hours going through every page of it!

senor_Camaro 03-14-2011 12:00 PM

I just stubbled on your thread, I love what you have done to the camaro. Absolutley awesome, You beat me to the punch of putting an abs system in a 1st gen, I had been working on the details of the swap. Awesome job!

Gear Ratio

Mark,

Congrats on your accolades at SEMA and the Optima challenge. Followed your builds over the years, and thought you had reached the pinnacle with the Mule. Going to be tough to top this one!

Read that you have 3.25 gears out back. I'm curious as to your thought process on arriving at that number. Do you have some different gears in the T56? I'm finishing up a similar 69 with an LS7/T56. Currently have 4.10s and finding 1st gear is worthless, but with a 3.25 my top two gears would be really steep. How does it work with your setup?

Thanks,
Bill

Mr. Stielow, Where do we buy your book I see people talking about? Does is detail your ABS system work? And does it go over your computer choices for the ECM's and if or what you did with the LAN systems for the LS7/LS9?

Thanks

You can order the book at http://sdparts.com/ but it does not detail the ABS. Mark isn't going to risk someone getting hurt relying on info he gives out. If he gets it all sorted out to where it is bulletproof I'm sure he will let everyone know how to do it.

I don't know what to search for or I'm just looking in the wrong places. Could you please pull up a link to the book specifically.

Thanks again
