Wow - can't believe this is the first time I saw this one either.

Love it. Your car is very similar in build style to mine. Its too bad you have competitive secrets it would be fascinating to discuss suspension setup.

Do you know how(or care to share) much your uprights weigh (no hubs) ?

Do you have any raw pictures of them with the brake mounts ? That was the only part I couldn't get a good angle on in the pictures. Looks like Maier did a good job of tucking that ball joint in. I have to run 9" BS on my front wheels to get down to 1/2" SR. It also looks like that design has very low SAI.

Although I'm a fan of going with complete new design, ie space frame and rack & pinion, there is something deeply satisfying about using the stock subframe and steering box in this car.

One thing that I wanted to bring to your attention - the clevis being used in the fabrication photos on the FLCA has been known to break, there are some examples on corner-carvers somewhere. That is in an exceptionally high load area too, I would encourage you to look at the beefier clevises available from Coleman that should fit in that same spot (3/8" gap, 5/8 or 3/4 thread).

Favorite build thread for awhile I love discovering these things, I've gotten so jaded over the years its hard for me to still get excited but this one did it for me.

Also, I never saw a rwhp figure - you mentioned the K&N brought up your power so I assume you chassis dynoed it at that point. Any graphs ? Oh wait, that data is probably a bit classified as well.

I do not know the weight of the uprights. They are not light as they are all steel. Maier Racing has since made them with billet aluminum. I may be installing them later. He currently has them on his car.

I don't have any other photos....sorry.

I like the feel of the old style steering. That is why I went with it. The class rules also dictate the use of the stock subframe.

Thank you for the heads up. We are all over it.

I got 517 hp to the rear wheels. Not bad. No secret. :D

Great -- super driver.... now super photographer... :willy: :D

It is a nice shot. I've always like black and whites.

73CPCAMARO 10-04-2011 08:41 PM

I wish I could take credit for the photo. I had a pro take a bunch of high quality shots when I was at Willow Springs. I just played with the colors,:D

See you at SEMA and OUSCI

The wheels are made by DPE.

Thanks Brian, I'm in the market for some wheels and those are sweet!! If I'm lucky maybe they will have them in 17's.

They only make 18"+. Mine are huge at 19" front and 20" rear. I went that big to get the biggest tire possible.

I know, I just checked. Oh well.......I dont want to be paying the 18" tire prices so so far its looking like Forgeline GA3R's.

73CPCAMARO 10-09-2011 07:59 PM

I got one last autocross weekend before SEMA. The car is getting close. I still have a bit of understeer to get out. Here is in car camera with one of my runs.

Sieg 10-09-2011 10:22 PM

Looking good Brian! That motor sounds solid, the car has to be great fun to drive.

Track Junky 10-09-2011 10:27 PM

Great vid Brian, understeer harder to see on vid than over steer. After watching the vid I spent alot of time going through your build thread. I was especially curious on what transmission you were using and the G-Force certainly helps keep the weight down. I didn't hear you shift in the vid and am curious what rear gears your running. Very inspiring build and your years of experience in the sport definitely show in your build. This pretty much has to be my favorite build ever!!

Flash68 10-09-2011 11:38 PM

Brian, great vid. Thanks for posting. That looks like a great fun course layout. Wish I coulda made it down this weekend.

Car sounds great!

3 of the OUSCI competitors were there, how did you stack up against each other?

Bow Tie 67 10-10-2011 05:01 AM

Brian,

How does it compare to the vette?

Cris@JCG 10-10-2011 06:51 AM

Brian- really looking forward to seeing your car @ Optima!

Everything is faster in the Camaro compared to the Corvette...steering, throttle response and power. While the car is fairly easy to drive for me, I drove the Corvette for so long it was like an extension of me. I did not have to wonder at all how it was going to react to my inputs. I am still in learning mode and we are constantly making changes to the Camaro to get it dialed in. Out of the box, the Camaro was faster on the track and the gap is widening each time out.

Great looking run Brian - the car runs as hard as it looks! Awesome car - also looking forward to seeing it at Optima next month.

Gregg

It may be hard to see the understeer as I was kicking the rear end out to fight the understeer. The last turn before the finish you can see the understeer I was fighting.

I shifted two times. I ran most of the course in 1st gear and shifted to 2nd at the 29 second mark in the video and then back to 1st gear at the 33 second mark. 3:70 gears and a 2.49 1st and 2.0 2nd gear. The transmission makes a lot of noise, but it works great. Shifts are smooth and firm when you are driving the car hard.

Thanks,
Brian

Brian, cool video...that thing is freakin' awesome! Definitely one of my favorite Camaro builds. I notice you have an XM/Sirius antennae mounted on the dash, do you have any problems with reception? (That's a good idea and never thought about putting one there.)

No stereo for me. The engine is music to my ears :D That is for the GPS speedometer. No problems with reception.

What a great 1st and 2nd gear combo. What are the rest of the ratios?

73CPCAMARO 10-10-2011 11:34 AM

2.49, 2.0, 1.49, 1.0. The first three are set up for autocross and 4th for freeway driving with the 3:70 rear. I can cruise on the freeway under 3000. I don't like the drop from 3rd to 4th on the road course, but I had to compromise. It drops down to 4700 rpm when I go from 3rd to 4th at redline. At least it has a lot of power there. I wish I could afford a 5 speed. Donations are accepted. :D

Flash68 10-10-2011 11:50 AM

Oh wow I thought that was a 5 speed. Your 3rd gear is near equal to my 2nd gear. I obviously chose the road course setup. Your 1st couple gears gotta be fun on the street too.

So your top speed in 4th should be just a tad above what most of the big boys hit on the straight at Spring Mtn I am guessing. Nice.

My bad...I should've known better. That engine definitely is MUSIC.:D

Brian, I read you just ran in the exhibition class and blew away all the "class winners" times by a second or more. Nice.

I was running Hoosier A6's at the time. Not quite fair, so it is hard to compare times. The group as a whole drove very good and we got as many runs as we wanted. I think a bunch got 15+ runs per day!

Mike did not run his 66 Mustang as he needed to wrap up the CP championship, so he ran his CP car. Mary and I were pretty even over the weekend. We were in the same tenth on Saturday and I got her by .3 on Sunday. Overall, very close. I think we all have some sorting out to do, but we will be ready to shoot it out at OUSCI.

Very cool vid Brian.

I think your build will influence a number of people building cars they'll track.

73CPCAMARO 10-24-2011 09:27 AM

On Friday we taped at Wilwood Brakes the install of upgraded calipers and rotors for the OUSCI. It was a great day!

Hey Brian, I just went through the entire thread. Am really sorry I never posted in it. This is a heck of a build and I would say definately you will be challenging for the Optima win this year as well as your friend Mike in the mustang.

Have you run the car with 200 treadwear tires yet?

I have been running 300 treadwear tires since mid-July. I have about 70 + autocross laps on them plus 6 open track sessions. I can't wear them out!
