With a helmet on in a car with no windows -- no -- the sound doesn't bother me at all - in fact I love it.

There is no exhaust or anything like that on any parts of the car AFT of the dumps... But this car runs 110 octane Race Gas... and burns really clean

I asked because of the heat next to the rear end. While racing, I assume, the exhaust would get very hot and having an additional heat source next to the rear...

When racing -- the car is mostly always in motion - so there's lots of airflow under the car.

I didn't realize this car had a bunch of our stuff on it; no wonder it works so well!
I see our pedal covers, subframe connectors, tower brace kit, our power rack and pinion and the Pro-Pump kit. Looks like it has the early design front lower control arms and strut rods -probably the complete coilover system, right? What shocks does it have in the front?

That's not how it works..... that's not how any of this works....

Just because you asked --- I got off my butt and walked out to the shop and snapped some super duper iPhone pics just for you.

Here's the roll cage and it's layout in case you decide to copy it....or for anyone that wants to copy it.

Note the lack of down bars in the trunk!

Alright, so 1.633 is 41.49mm which is between 1 5/8" and 1 11/16", just so we're clear....

So let's just say, for example, a guy was trying to do something nice for someone and order a helmet and steering wheel hook. They only come in 1 1/2" or 1 3/4", what do you do? The 1 1/2" will fit but the bracket will have a gap...the 1 3/4" will be loose unless the bar is wrapped. I don't have the means to open up the 1 1/2" to fit snug, besides that I don't want to put that much effort into it!

WWWD?

I would never do anything nice for anyone - so have never had that problem....

But it's a dang good question!

A guy could get the larger diameter and then use some sheet rubber (which I have already) to make the gap grippy... Yippeeeeee

JB64CHEVELLE 05-19-2014 08:15 PM

What about that famous gap spray to fill the gap..:mock:

True story buddy -- sad story, but true.

For the life of me I could not understand these ridiculous requirements!

It was the semantics..... I swear!

I read the rules 5 times -- they never said "Green GROUP" or "Yellow GROUP"....
And I didn't even know about run groups at that time.

Regardless -- the story is true and I still laugh.

A few weeks later -- I walk in to Brizio's shop and the guy behind the counter is telling me how hard he laughed at this little 'snafu'... GD Charley had called them and spilled the beans. Just shoot me....

GregWeld 05-20-2014 05:39 PM

I know you guys think I don't do much.... but besides the brakes -- new tires -- it gets an oil change and filter after EVERY event....

This time I will also repack the inner and outer wheel bearings... and of course - nut and bolt everything I can get to.

Seems lately that I only work on "others" cars Marty.

Did a quickie fuel tank extension project for my brother in laws Camaro last weekend -- and made him a different fuel line...

I didn't have time to build him a whole new tank from scratch -- so he'll just have to wait til the new shed is set up this winter. In the meantime - he can cruise this summer without being so worried about where the next gas station is.

That POR 15 is tough stuff!!!!

http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...o/IMG_5566.jpg

Needed to open up the bottom anyway - so cut out the old fuel pick up tubes

http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...o/IMG_5573.jpg

http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...o/IMG_5574.jpg

Punched it with some new holes....

http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...o/IMG_5576.jpg

The tank was so warped there was not a single "square" or flat panel on it.... UGH --- What a lot of work to try to get the new extended area to at least appear to be flat and straight!

http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...o/IMG_5578.jpg

http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...o/IMG_5579.jpg

http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...o/IMG_5580.jpg

STUPID TANK!! Wouldn't stand on it's own..... SO a few clamps and some legs and now I could do a little TIG work.

http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...o/IMG_5590.jpg

I had nowhere for my hands to rest --- so had to bend up the torch and weld running the bead towards me.... OH MY -- this is easy for the girls that do welding day in and day out -- but for those of us that weld sporadically -- it's work!

http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...o/IMG_5591.jpg

26 sticks of fill later....... Thank god for TIG FINGERS!!! They really do help with the heat!

I have no clue how you can weld an old gas tank. It has always scares the heck out of me. We had a kid at a local repair
shop die last summer when he tried to fix a leaky tank. It exploded and fortunately it killed him immediately and he didn't suffer.

ps I will be bringing my car over soon

He - unfortunately is up for The Darwin Award....

Welding on gas tanks is super easy --- and I don't do ANYTHING that isn't safe!

First you have to wash them real well with a strong mix of some kind of soap and water.... Gas is an OIL based product -- so you can't just rinse with water like some morons try to do.... I use Simple Green -- and it's a strong solution. TWICE.

Then I use the SNIFF TEST.... Still smell gassy? Wash it again!

Then I rinse two or three times - until there's no soapy water....

Then -- Here's the trick! I put DRY ICE in the tank -- as it dissolves -- it turns into an inert gas -- Carbon Dioxide (CO2).... NO OXYGEN - NO IGNITION. It's the FUMES that kill ya! (Gas fumes and air). I displace all the air in the tank with the CO2.

I'd use a back gas of Argon... but that's expensive for a "home guy".... as you'd have to displace the air in a pretty large space. I can do this cheaply ---- AND I CAN SEE IT WORKING --- when I use Dry Ice.

syborg tt 05-21-2014 09:55 AM

That is a great way of doing it. When I convert to efi I will bring you the tank

So, why would that Vette you were looking at pass sound (or would it?) and not the Lotus? me no understandee.
Not to mention some of the NASCAR's up there racing, am i missing something from the Lotus or do they just not like it up there?

That ain't all you're missing dude.....

They love the Lotus. Just not when you aim the exhaust at the meter. And no the Vette wouldn't make sound.

Chassisworks 06-12-2014 10:29 AM

My two cents, not that anyone asked...

The screwed up thing about Laguna is that while there is a sound limit, you can PAY for a loud day and gain a few more decibels. Apparently the locals care about noise levels, but if you're willing to pay to inconvenience their ears, well that's okay.

All of my experience on track is with bikes, but I have several hundred laps around Laguna on probably a dozen different bikes. The only bike I haven't blown sound on was a KLR650 that I brought for putting around town. The weather plays a big part. I have known people with bone stock 600s to blow the sound meter; it's the airbox noise. But a few times I have gone by on my race bike at full tilt and it wouldn't be a problem.

I'm betting the sound meter is the reason that they set up a slalom section between 5 and 6 for the USCA event. Low RPM is low(er) noise. Kinda ingenious in my opinion.

clill 06-12-2014 07:08 PM

I think Ron sutton said the sound meter picks up the higher pitched sounds. The nascars are a lower pitch and that little Lotus is high pitched.

At T-Hill the sound meter is about 50 yards up the main straight from T-15 in the little building next to the fence in the pits. I believe what was happening to me in the Lotus was hitting the rev limiter in 3rd and the pop from the limiter spiked the meter. The motor/exhaust is quiet, add the wind noise from the open cockpit, and the motor pulls right through the limiter it's tough to gauge your shift point. A shift light would be handy in that little go kart.

GregWeld 08-05-2014 04:32 PM

So.... the motor broke again at Sonoma. It was also having a fuel pressure regulator issue. Ron Sutton worked some magic and got it so I could continue to run even with the electric pump making 14 PSI... and a carb that wants to see 6 !!!

But she got hurt... and we (Ron Sutton Race Technologies) had already planned to do a suspension do over at BMR Race Shop in Roseville -- so they'll get in to the motor and we'll plan a course of action.

http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...r/IMG_6006.jpg

Since the little Lotus and her 1.8 Liter Toyota motor run like a Japanese watch (couldn't use SWISS HERE!) maybe I should stick a Toyota truck motor in it?? Should we have a vote???

http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...r/IMG_6004.jpg

Dropped the poor Mustang off at the shop.... and I have to tell ya -- it looked quite inadequate and she was having motor and tranny and suspension envy... sitting amongst all this hardware! OH YEAH!!

Times are irrelevant in track days... mostly because no two cars are anywhere near "equal". Different motors - different size tires - different compound tires... That's just jerking off talk. The Lotus with it's 1.8 liter motor was faster... and the Mustang with it's skinny tires was slower... only at the point of when Ron choose to time the laps. When Gae was trying to chase me the Mustang pulled on him like he was dragging an anchor. Doesn't matter.... it's all just so much BS. There's dozens of cars and drivers out there that are FAR faster and there's an equal amount that are easily passed... I only pass people if they're slower than I am - but it's not the way I keep track of my "progress" as a driver or how well the car is working (or not). If people keep track of that kind of stuff - then they're not having much fun just enjoying the "event" and the people and their own car. There's no "Wally" at the end of the day... just a barbecue and a beer. When I pass someone -- I give them a friendly wave thanking them for letting me by.... and if I'm lucky enough to be able to be somewhat matched with someone - I'll go to their pit and thank them for letting me run with them. There's a guy with a 4 cylinder Turbo Thunderbird that runs regularly with us. He used to blow by me like I was in the wrong group... this time at Sonoma we ran several laps together - he pointed me by and I declined even though I was faster - I'd rather run and have fun with him - we each enjoyed the give and take - catching up or pulling away depending on which corner we were in. I then went to his trailer to thank him... he's a young guy and drives a great line... at Thunderhill this October - I promised him a session in the Lotus as he has admired it (even though we were running T-bird against Mustang). Given what he's driving - and his ability - he'd just rip the Lotus and I'd love to give him the chance. That's what makes this all fun. I don't really give a sh!t about lap times. On Saturday they were fast - on Sunday - for whatever reason - everyone was off by 2 to 4 seconds. Didn't feel like it - but that's what the watch said. Same people - same cars - different day. Weird.
