IMO, FAIL!

I love how Ford continues to ignore the obvious need to reduce ride height in these cars (the Shelby GT--built by Shelby--got it right, but the GT500--built by Ford--is a 4x4). Their solution is to continue to hang more & more overhang on the car to make it appear lower. How many black plastic panels can they invent?!?!?

Just take a close look at this pic. It's 1/3 taillight & 2/3 bumber & exhaust surround. What a f-a-t a-s-s! They've squished down the tailight area so much that the license plate recess is part of the exhaust surrround? Just to make room for the fake gas filler (GT emblem)?!?!?! The key is recessed into the spoiler...which is a permanent part of the lid?

I hadn't seen the V6 version yet - The fog light openings look awful...that's a shame. The rest of the bumper looks OK, looks like a slightly melted version of the current gt500 LOL!....just those foglight openings are terrible....aaaahhh! I can see a lot of V6 owners buying GT bumpers or aftermarket ones...

The lower areas of the GT bumpers mostly really the front bumper needs to becleaned up as well as slimmer side rockers in my opinion would really clean up the car. Again though overall I really dig it - I can see the potential.

The 315 hp. rating is only for one year, then it will be 400 hp. In the meantime you can get an FRPP whipple blower installed by your dealer to get 400 hp and go as high as 500 hp at the crank. I think Ford is offering it as a way to temporarily bridge the horsepower gap with the Camaro and Challenger. Remember the Mustang GT is still the lightweight compared to the Camaro and Challenger. So that helps a little.

I didn't realize that it was one year only. What are they doing after 2010?
The weight difference surely does help in the meantime.

I dont like it. Especially the rear of the car. Blending the bumper and the rear tail panel just looks wrong to me. I like the more traditonal mustang looking rear of the current ones. (my son drives an 06)

That's the problem when you NAIL a design like the 05-now model. Where do you go from there? Every step is a step away from perfection. At least the camaro avoided that. They still have room to improve the body lines to make it even more "camaro" looking in the future.

From what I understand, it's not a keyhole, it's a backup camera. I agree, the tail is the worst offender on this car. I like the sides, I'm okay with the nose. It definitely needs some lowering springs and decent wheels with a little lip.

A well done ducktail that surrounds the tail panel from the lights up may be the 'fix', along the lines of the '69, like this:

Or this:

I wouldn't be surprised if the new 5.0L with 400hp makes it's debut as a 2011 Boss 302.

It is hard for me to state my opinion of the car because I feel I come off as an arrogant jerk. I think that the mustang is one of those cars that epitomizes America, you see one and you think red white and blue (along with a camaro dont get me wrong) but this car spells euro all over it and I dont like the styling of it, I think they should have stuck off the last generation and mad more subtle modifications to it, not such a drastic one as the front grill or rear lights...I was looking to get either a new mustang gt or a camaro in the next year but assuming either is around I am definitely leaning towards the new camaro

A poster on another forum made a brilliant observation...he said it looks like Ford is trying to put a modern spin on a car designed to look retro. I can't think of a better way to put it.

Hdesign 11-20-2008 08:09 AM

I personally don't think this is an improvement over the current styling. It has some potential though.

conekiller13 11-20-2008 10:17 AM

It made it's debut on Knight Rider last night!

I still don't care for it. Both the New Camaro and Challenger have done a better job with the retro thing. They both took the best styling elements of the old to create new. Ford took some of the worst attributes to make something bulky and recycled looking. Now it looks a little smoother and less Mustang II, like someone else said an updated retro............is that an oxymoron?

I just realized they smoothed out the fake "brake cooling duct" on the quarter panel. Thats... interesting. Most people liked that part best about the last car.

I cant wait to see what shelby and the other tuners do with it.
