Yep, tires are incredibly important. Of course, you can cheat, and use R compound tires to pump up the numbers! It's been done before. And with racing slicks, if you are not WAY over 1 G, you should strongly consider selling the car.

Just keep in mind also, that "G" forces measured on a skid pad is only one aspect of how fast a car will ultimately be. Skidpads are steady state systems, meaning the car isn't going through transitions, such as bumps, or alternating turns, off-camber banking, etc. A skid pad is just like a chassis dyno, it shows potential, but doesn't always equate to how fast a car will go.

Jan: I can just see the picture.... After she collects herself, looks over at you with "that" look, you kind of say in a sheepish way, "gee, sorry honey, er, are you okay???"
