I found a frame last weekend for $45 and couldn't pass it up. My frame was bent in the crash. I had it straightened but when I took the bed off to repair the back of the cab I didn't feel comfortable with the work that had been done. What's the the saying? (If you want something done right, do it yourself). So here's the frame, I have all these big idea's Ride Tech, Stage two system, 18" wheels etc. Or put the new windows & siding on the house that I have been promising the wife I would do. Since I made the promise to upgrade the house I have bought the 91 truck, built a 26' x 30' x 10' garage and bought a 69 Dodge Dart 340 4spd car. I'm not sure how much more she'll take. Anyway here is where this phase of the project starts "again", we'll see where it goes.

$45??? Awwww man, I passed up a $100 frame for my Chevelle a few months ago and I was kicking myself for that. I'm REALLY jealous you managed to find a frame for your project for 45. Good thing about that is, you really can go as slow or fast as you want without having to worry about keeping the truck down for long periods of time AND you can work directly on the frame without having to be up under it. :thumbsup:

1 step forward 3 steps back
I started tearing the truck down last weekend. I will probably go back with the leaf spring suspension for now (money or lack of) 4/6 drop. I'll put poly bushings where I can and I picked up a rear sway bar from a 99 Tahoe that will be installed. I'll post pics of the sway fab and install. Here are pics of the tear down.

Way cool. Just seeing these pics reminds me of about 6 and half months ago when mine was in a million pieces scattered about my garage and driveway. It's going to be a neat project Richard. These look good with a 4/6.

Looks like where I should be. Looks like fun too. Would be nice if we all lived near one another. Imagine how helpful that would be. In my head I'm counting Five of these projects going on.
I have plans for a 4/6 drop too. I go back and forth daily ,and sometimes hourly, on if I'm going to just do a 4/6 for now or wait it out and do a full RideTech suspension or do a hybrid (say Shockwaves up front and flip kit in the rear) until the budget allows. Haven't decided. To you guys who have experience...which end of the suspension plays the most part in comfort level? |
Air is nice and the adjustability is great. The simplicity of a 4/6 or a 5/7 is cool too. A 5/7 with bushings and bars and good shocks and that is a solid route too.
I'd like to do another CK with a 5/7 and 18-inch Americans. Okay maybe 20's but 5-spokes with a grey center. They are bitchin trucks either way whether hammered static or on air. |
Rear sway bar
Here are some pictures of the rear sway I snagged @ Pick N Pull last weekend. It's from a 99 Tahoe. I Also tried to get the mounts from the rearend by using an 18V sawsall to slice the shock/sway bar mounts from the rear end housing. The axles were already out. After bending three blades I gave up. I will just fab up some mounts in the stock location on the rear end. It looks like a direct bolt in, no need to shorten the link rods. I also have to correct the pinion angle. The previous owner welded the leafspring pads in the wrong angle. I am going to do most of the fab work using the old frame, before I start transferring parts to the new frame.
