Just happened to me today on FB:

Hacker: our return flight leaves in some few hours but we are having problems settling the hotel bills
Hacker: i need you to please loan us some money so we can settle the bills
Hacker: i promise to refund it as soon as i get back
Friend: what is your phone number
Hacker: my phone was stolen in the process
Friend: what is the hotel number
Hacker: it has been so terrible for me here
Friend: do you want to speak to the hotel manager?
Hacker: I can but I am in a meeting till 11am
Friend: give me the number and I will call
Hacker: have to get out of facebook
Friend: send me the phone number
Hacker: the best way for you to help me out of here is to help me send some money via western union
Hacker: i need you to send the money via western union,,,all you need to send the money is my name and location
Hacker: Name:<My Name>
Hacker: Location:96 Trongate
Hacker: Glasgow, G1 5EP
Hacker: that is all you need to send the money
Hacker: you can also have the money sent online or find a western union location
Hacker: here is the hotel manager's number
Hacker: +447024064345
Hacker: i might not be on facebook when your done, you can contact me on my mailbox... (<incorrect nearly my e-mail).

What all of my friends did was ask for information that was not on my FB profile. After that, the hacker went silent.

So, if something seems odd, ask questions, make folks prove what they say.

lots of this going on. I got an email through Facebook from a member here that needed money fast. Of course it was bs, but they're getting trickier in their scams.

I read something about hackers were hacking computers so that when you viewed your bank webpage it would show no new transactions except the hackers were pulling money out and the only way to tell was call the bank, ATM, or monthly statement.

Even though most of the money management web services are safe and trustworthy, it's been a while since the last time I payed something by the interwebz, I think the last time was before I turned 15 or so.

Even though there are a lot of ways of getting your webpages to be safe and never give up on your personal info, there is more than one way of getting it, so be REALLY careful, if I were you I'd stop making web transactions for a while.

Had this happen to my grandparents while I was working in Texas. My phone had been hacked a while back and they used my grandparents to get $3k. Said I was in jail in Mexico. There were so many holes in the story, so many easy quesitons that should have been asked it still makes me want to hurt someone to this day, but I digress.

Talk to everyone you know and tell them if they don't talk to you personally, tell the person asking for $ or info to f-off

Jody and I received an odd email from a mutual contact a while ago, maybe a month, and it was along these same lines. Damn hackers.

I got one from my dentist about a year ago. I thought really Dr Reed is emailing from Mexico if I'm that far up his emergency email list there must be a problem.
