Thanks guys. I appreciate the responses. I think what I'm going to do relatively soon is pull down the ceiling in the old section of garage and insulate above there so that, hopefully, my master bedroom stays a little warmer. I'll worry about the rest of the garage as I continue to investigate my options.

Funny note. I checked and only half of the master is above the old section of garage. I used my IR temp gun to check the floor temperature. You can hold the gun, walk across the floor, and see the temp rise immediately after crossing into the section with the storage room below.

Again ....spray foam, no vapour barrier needed , peel back the garage ceiling and spray right against whatever is there

I used this stuff from Lowes, cut it into snug pieces on each section, then taped the joints. Tonight's temp is 15 degrees F here in Toronto.

Another thing to keep in mind is when adding extra weight to the door sometimes the spring tension has to be adjusted.
