Hi Kadette!
I agree with deuce454 although I wonder if it is really what you want as far as an automatic transmission. If you like banging through the gears then a T56 is a good choice but keep in mind that with a T56 you will have to cut out the transmission tunnel to fit it in since it is wider. This means you will have to move your accelerator and brake pedal over a bit. If it was me, since your only putting 400 hp in the car I would go with a TKO500/5 speed manual. This trans should fit into the existing trans tunnel and is VERY good! For Auto a 4L60E is a good choice but I would have it beefed up a bit as you will probably want to go for more HP after you have the car for a while and you will already have the trans ready for it! If you are going to drag race then a 2 or 3 speed! LS1 is a good choice for bang for your buck performance. I, on the other hand, am stupid but I really want to run the LS2 in my '66. It is 472 hp out of the box and can easily be upgraded to almost 600 hp with a cam, heads, and intake! |

I would really like an manual transmission, but at the first stage of my build i will not give an extra 2000 in order to get manual transmission if automatic i available. And when you say i have to modify the tunnel in order to get the T56 to fit i am aiming more towards an 4L60E. But i have not gained that much information on this transmission other than it seems like the camaro guys that have these seem to upgrade to some other? How much is needed to get this transmission to shift fast and handle say 600hp? The 400-450hp is only my first stage of build. I might go higher on first stage since it seems like the LS1 is build with potential and quite easily makes 500+hp. I would really love to buy an LS2 engine but it seems like at the moment it is a bit out of my budget. Since i decided to go for an complete coil over front clip. |

Thanks alot for the links! They just made me a bit more confused to what transmission i am going to run. Do you know how hard it is to replace the parts in the transmission? I helped rebuilt a TH400 a couple of years ago but that is all i have done with automatics. But i am quite firm with my hands.
But with this upgrade i should have a quite reliable transmission with say 500hp. From one end to the other what parts do i need to get to run auto transmission in my nova and what is needed to run manual? I guess with the manual i will only need to make mounts and a driveshaft. Then modify my tunnel. And have new pedals. But what if i run auto? |
if you run the auto all you need to do is shorten the driveshaft and either modify the existing transmission crossmember, or make a new one to fit the longer transmission.. if you are runnung the original shifter you will need to replace the gate in the mechanism, it cost about 25 bucks and is available from www.bowtieoverdrives.com
the manual swap is alittle more time end money consuming but not much, you will need a new pedal setup and a hydraulic mastercylinder for the clutch, the t56 that comes with a camaro engine wont withstand 600 hp for long periods of time and neither will the clutch, but weather you get a centerforce, mcleod street twin or tilton carbon/carbon multidisc clutch is very much a question of money and preference as they are 500, 1200 and 3500 USD respectively.. i would go with a 4l60e and mount a http://www.twistmachine.com/ shifter... which is what im actually going to do my self... |
The paddle shift idea, is actually one of the main reasons why i am quite hooked on a auto transmission. I think this would be a very cool feature in an 1967 car. And it looks like they are quite easy to install. I lean more and more towards saving some money and go for the auto and then do some aftermarket parts for it.

we should but two of them and save on the shipping...

Yes if you have not ordered yours yet. Then that might be an idea.
Did you know how difficult it was to change the parts you listed from the ebay auction? |
it is actually not very difficult, ive assisted on a 700R4 which is basically the same tranny, it requires one semi specialized tool (that doesnt tahe to long to make) and a tall drillpress (søjleboremaskine) to compress a spring that can otherwise drive you nuts.. but other than that its not harder than disassembling a steeringcoloum..
ib masdsen, does a couple of them a week, so if you came with the tranny and parts you wanted installed i am sure its 1500-2000 DKR to have him do it... thats what im doing anyway.. but feel free to call me at 23232102, (after 3 pm today) and we can talk some specifics... btw, here is a link to ATS, (its on the left side of the screen also) http://www.t56kit.com/ |
