Thanks.. I have enjoyed watching your build. very cool truck  |
Your subframe connector wher eit connects to the front rail - did you add any reinforcement at that attachment point ?
The little "stub" that comes off the main rail, ie where you have attached your subframe connector , is a very thin weak piece. I would add an extension or some kind of gusseting system to attach to the real frame horn. If you design it cleverly, you can reinforce the curved/bend area of your connector to make up for the weakness of a bent tube as well. Should only cost you about 4 lbs per side, 8 lbs total. on edit: I took a closer look , it does appear you may have done some reinforcement there already. That "stub" is almost tinfoil thin compared tothe frame horn normally. |

You are right that your sub frame conectors and cage add alot of strength but if you tie into the factory rocker that was intended by the factory to be the strength of the uni body it will help everything that you have done be that much more solid with out much time, money or weight added. I am getting ready to start a 62 futura build and wil be tieing everything together. The way I see it is since the rockers are support for the door jambs, hinge and strike posts why not add more strength to these areas and reduce any body flex at the same time. Nice build by the way, I have alot of what you have done on my list of parts that I am gathering but sine futura's are not as popular to build as stangs I will be doing alot of it from posts like yours for design. Keep it up it will be well worth it when you are finished. Nice to see you are not cutting any corners in your build. Kevin LFD inc. |
I have a bad habit of over building a car but i rather do it once stiffen up the car the best i can and pray if i wreck it i might live through it.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. well Im convinced, I decided to add some gussets and tie the subframe connectors to the rockers. Now, I just have to make some. Any ideas?
I have most of the seam welding complete. Im also going to do some seam welding on the rockers, cowl area, door jambs, hinge post and strike post. I will post some pics by next week. I have also been thinking about running side exhaust through the rocker of the car. This would be a lot more work, but look real clean. Im just going to take my time, so I dont miss any little details. Again, Thanks to everyone for your input on my build. |
very cool build, keep making the updates.

I have had a lot more free time to work on my car. I finished a majority of the seem welding. All thats left is some of the floor pan seams. Yesterday, I recieved the outer rocker rail support kit from Global West. I just need to modify the kit a little, then I can weld it up. After the outer rocker rail kit is installed, I will work on getting the mini tubs finished.

What kind of welder are you using?
looks like Flux no? Keep it up! Lead. |
Thanks.. For the roll cage, chassis fab I used a lincoln TIG 375 and a lincoln MIG 255.

Rendering!!!
Here is the rendering of my project. Its not the final rendering, but real close to it. The only things I will change are the stripes, the upper vent above the rear quarter panel and I will have a stepped lip on the wheels. Other than that, I really like how the renderings came out. Ben Hermance did a really great job. :D

Dude, bad ass rendering! I really like Ben's work. :)

So who makes the front of the car. The grill and headlight area as well as the bumper and spoiler combo? Is that a carbon fiber hood? Is that something you will have to custom build? Love the car and can't wait to see it finished.

The nose is derived from the Nemesis kit with some adjustments, specifically around the headlights. It was a pleasure working with you Gabe...it's gonna be a killer car for sure!

work so far looks killer. awesome work from Ben on the concept as well.

Hey guys!!
Just letting you know that this project is still in the works. I have had a few set backs. 1) bought a house = less money 2) house projects = less time 3) company I worked for went under so I am unemployed at the moment = even less money, but more time :D The good things are I have more tools and space to work on the mustang. I bought a welder(Millermatic 212) which was much needed. I love having my own place it's great!!! After some cutting, grinding and welding I got the mini tubs in and tacked in place. I made a filler piece for the front crossmember of the car and welded that in place. I also cut up the rocker rail support kit I bought from Global West I just need to weld that in next. Things are moving along just very slow haha. Once the Rocker Rail kit and mini tubs are welded in place I should be done with all the fab on the chassis. I had planned to take the car to JCG Restorations & Customs to get the fender widening treatment since they're so damn good at it!!! but those plans are set back since I lost my job :( Oh well its just another setback, but I will finish this car. I promise!! |
Sorry to hear about you losing your job.. & I am sure you will get your car done.. Just at a slower pace..

Thanks for the support. You will definitely here from me I want you to give these quarters and fenders your special touch :D
Is it best that I don't weld up the mini tubs? Quote:
|
We will be here!
Do not well them towards the qtr panel side.. Just tack weld to hold position & we will go from their.. Quote:

Seriously, i like it too, love those holes and i would like to know what is used to do them. I saw them here and there on a few cars and especially once used in the A pillars (filling up between cage tube and inner windshield post) but cant remember the car. It looks killer, i would not know where to stop i think.... Nevermind the job btw, keep working on the car!!! Lead. |
Haha I got a little trigger happy with the camera!!
I used Dimple Dies to bevel the holes. You drill the holes to whatever size you want and press the dimple dies on to get that cool beveled look. They're expensive if your just doing a few pieces I would go your local Race/Hot Rod shop. They should have them and shouldn't charge much to do it for you. Quote:

Perfect!! Will do!

Great advice on the dimple dies! they are spendy and it's nice to have different size options... but... talk to your hot rod builder, machine shop FIRST... find out what size dies they have and then drill your holes accordingly... they need to be the same size or very close. Nice job on th "stang so far... will definitely watch your progress. thanks for posting.

Finally more progress!! Had to make some modifications to the Global West Rocker Rail support kit. I had to miter the 1" square tubing to fit flush against the factory pinch weld. I welded the square tubing up and metal finished the welds. Next I cut the round tubed down to size and welded them in place between the sub-frame connectors and square tubing against the pinch weld. I also finished welding the mini tubs!

I'm off of unemployment and back to work!! Thank God!!! I know this is not a car update, but boy it's nice to be making some real money! Now I can spend it all on the project and drive myself further into dept :D I will try to post some more pics of where I am at with the car soon!

I always like to see Ford builds. No doubt the car is going to be awesome. Brings a mix to Lateral-Chevy. Hahaha. :)

Thanks!! The chevys definitely outnumber the fords! haha

Here are some updated pics!! 1st and 2nd pic show the Global West Rocker Rail support welded in. 3rd shows the mini tubs welded in. 4th pic shows the firewall after I ground down body filler around the edges. It was 1/4" thick in some spots. This was someones attempt to smooth out the firewall. NO BUENO! They used flimsy 26ga metal and spread filler on top till it was level. I am going cut it out and do it the right way!
