And your compression must be on the high side I would think, also necessitating the need for forged/lower-compression pistons? |
I decided to make the changes and avoid catastrophic failure later.

Do you have the cam specs? |
Rodger??? There was no insult meant I honestly just wanted to see the finished product. I have to tell you I totally understand where you are coming from. I am nowhere in your category but am a backyard builder who likes challenging builds.
I do not think most understand the difference between a well built bolt together ride and a one off piece. Every part modified or made requires thought and about 10 more items that are effected by that one change. Problem is 90% of the people never see that detail and look at a Camaro with bolt on parts as one in the same. I do sheet metal work and all those tubes have to be days in thought to trim with finish metal. Money plays a big role and I can appreciate both types. Takes those well funded builds to get you somewhere in this Industry. Look forward to seeing your future builds. |
Brian No Insult taken. That is a question I answer on a regular basis. I have had Sports stars look at Johns car and ask "So is this guy going to have like 80,000 in this thing when it is all done?" Bro the LS7 is 12,000 and the Fikse wheels, and the BFG tires and the.......
I had a guy come into my shop and ask if we knew anything about 57 chevy trucks. I said Yes, we have worked on a few of those, let me show you one. I walked him into the back room where my truck is parked and he was so amazed. He said man that truck is incredible. This guy must have like 20,000 in this truck. I knew right there he had no clue what they were looking at. My response was, well he actually has about 35,000 on the engine and about 4000 hours in the whole build. He did not know what to say. Beings to say I never worked on his truck. The guys who really appreciate the work we do are guys who are into the build just as much if not more then the end result. The check writers need the shine and trophy's before that door is opened for a shop. Last saturday almost half of my customers met at my shop to check on the progress of their projects, but it amazes me how a sort of brother hood is created becasue of the very similar interests shared among them. They spend just as much time drooling over each others cars as they do there own. The passion for the build is their love. |
Rich,
You got a great project with a great crew. I look forward to seeing it in person. |
Thanks Mike,
I think were on the right track to making this project a little different and very special. Stay Tuned Rich |
Gotta say that I really liked the way that LS sat in your engine bay! Sweet!
My son was asking questions about your car on the way home. Guess I gotta start looking for a 'maro for him now!:( DAMMIT!  John |
John,
Rodger pressed your son about the looks of the camaro and he said that he liked the Novas better. My son loves my car but if he was to build his own it would be a 60's era corvette stingray. We could always work out a trade if you can't find something you like :unibrow: |

I had a stock LS2, fast 90 intake, AFR 205 heads and a 230/232 (112LSA) 0 -- this combo made 572hp. Your stock bottom end should be fine at that level, I beat the crap out of mine. Now with the boost I'm not as sure. Your LS2 is already at 10.8ish to 1 so you can't go much with boost on the stock hyper pistons. I know a procharger is sexy for for less $$ you could just stroke the LS2 with a nice forged assembly. Would make almost as much power and entail less install drama. By the way... nice ride! |
By the way Roger.. I will be calling you about our little "under construction".. err.. I mean "f-body garage" section.
I think you have what I need. lol |

I would agree that normally the package I have would be about 30 hp short of the 600 mark but my heads were sent back east to Kenny Bernstein's shop where they did some welding, machining and port work. Apparently they flowed 20% more air when they came back. Who knows, it might not have made 500..... Bad Penny has been an inspiration for me throughout my build. Thanks for the compliment. |

Nice work. I'm sure Rodger has this covered, but just in case............. make sure you build a nice brace for the main blower plate to prevent movement. The stock brackets also have this issue, and the twisting movement fore and aft of the blower under throttle makes belt slippage a big issue. It can be as simple as a solid 3/8" steel rod bolted to the main plate near the blower or the blower itself, and mounted to the front of the head, block, intake bolts, etc. Looks awesome Rich/Rodger. Jody |
Rich/Rodger,
Nice progress. Would you have enough room if you mounted the procharger in reverse of the pictures(same style as a c5 or c6 corvette)? You could build an easy air intake for the propeller...just a thought. What motor mounts did you use on the camaro? David |
It would hit the radiator, I tried. I'm thinking about pulling the air out from the cowl vent. I hate to go over the headers but maybe we can use some header wrap which would give the engine compartment a real industrial look. Or if you thermal coat the headers it should be far enough away to not really be an issue.
The inner fenders are the interference point for the Procharger. If I put it on the other side it would have to be more away from the engine cuz that cylinder head is farther forward. Right now it is really close to lining up to the serp belt as it is with a 1/4" plate used to test the fit up before we cust the rest of the support brackets. Rodger |
What about modifying the inner fenders?
using two plates (so both sides match) you could box the fenders in having the piping running through the enclosure. Does that make sense? |
Not really, can you expalin further? I need to install the front sheetmetal to see how much clearance we have. I have one header ready to go back in and then we will re hang the sheetmeal to make sure the Procharger is under the hood and my intercooler plumbing will go the way I want.

Could you mod the fenders, and move the procharger bracket further left on the pass. side? If you found the additional space, you could mount it like I suggested. I guess you would need to hang the fenders before you could tell. This is one heck of a build. I like the pictures on the ironworks website

I was thinking about boxing in one of the fender to accomidate the procharger.

NIce!
Nice Car Rich. Rodger on those Tubs I like my car low as well. If it all works out well can you replicate them? I would be interested in a set.
I want my car (67) low fat :-) |
We would have to build them for your car. We are typically a 1 off shop and we don't pattern much for the next, cuz every car is different. I could build and install them for ya though no problem. We can build to whatever width you car will allow. I could have gone deeper on the tubs for a 335 but rich did not want to take out the G -bar.

Personally I am not into the huge 315's I would be happy with a 285 40 17. if I could get it nice an low. |
are the 67-68 outer wheel wells differet than the 69s? cause todd(vegas 69) has 345s with dse tubs and g-bar it it pretty low and still clears... but its very tight.

The car sits lower then the G bar will go. If I put a wider tire, it would hit the lip of the fender due to the over hang being closer to the tire. The lower link on the G bar is just a tick below level if that gives you an indicator how low this car is. I could fit a 345 if we wanted to raise the back of the car. We will have to modify the upper shock mount to be able to run this ride height. The mount under the bar design of the upper shock mount is just a waste of space in my opinion and a poor design, cheaper to build but a waste of space. It motivates me to start on my own rear suspension kit. We will be changing that mount design when the car is totally disassembled and more able to get underneath. Right now the coil over spanners are against the adjuster knobs. If I ran it like this I should run a shorter shock body with a stiffer spring just to avoid bottoming out.
I hope this clears up any issue. Ride height and stance are key factors in all the cars we build. We find the deesirable ride height and modify everything to make it fit from there. I told brian (63 nova customer, Brian Mc )last weekend that every extra inch lower is like 10,000 more in some instances just to not have the headers drag and suspension bottom out and tires that rub. That is why Johns 66 is difficult, the ride height and the amount of crap in that car. |

i thought dragging headers was the new IN thing to do.... Rich your car is lookin sick. I like it with the blower, can't wait to see that thing on the road. there are going to be some bad ass rides coming out of that shop pretty soon what with the 57 truck and your car, that will be cool to see. Did you decide on some wheels yet? |
Brian,
I never imagined how secure I would feel with my car being completed by someone else but Rodger makes it so easy and the quality of his work is really starting to show. My car is a totally different project from the norm Ironworks puts out put I think when the Novas come out to play Rodger will really have his hands full with clients clamouring to get their projects in his shop. We will have to get together on the play ground as soon as your car is completed. Are you planning a trip to the shop anytime soon? Rich |
