Some fresh pics of the cold-side all mocked up. We decided to keep it cool and out in the fresh air. If this was a drag car we'd stay in the engine bay but give it 30 mins on the track and it'll be all heat-soaked under there.

http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...009_0228_1.jpg http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...009_0228_2.jpg

Gotta love those Brembos too.
The underside is also (re-) finished. The torque arm tube stayed but we redid the rest - one of those days where you just have to admit you made a wrong turn. Now it has a very unique way of cross bracing and providing monster torsional rigidity.

awr68 03-01-2009 01:33 PM

Sweet....or should I say cool man cool!!

CptKlutz 03-08-2009 12:17 PM

Here some more progress on the DP and cross over.

The 5" goes into 2x3" and just b4 passing thru the K-member into 2½"

CptKlutz 03-14-2009 12:33 AM

A bit of safety being added. 8pt roll bar + some swing outs to get in and out.

Interesting way of welding. Or did Dustin just fall asleep with the light on?

Ummgawa 03-14-2009 07:10 PM

Wow. Just when you have seen it all an original comes along. Very sweet ride and thanks for the pix, keep em coming.

J2SpeedandCustom 03-15-2009 07:37 AM

I've always said to be a good welder you have to be a contorsionist!!! Car is looking great one of my favorite builds to watch.

CptKlutz 03-27-2009 09:37 AM

Thx guys! Appreciated. More nice welds - rollbar finished:

CptKlutz 04-17-2009 12:19 PM

Whew, seems like the car has been at SoCal Paintworks for an age (<2 weeks actually) , but they ARE hard at work!

When stripping they found a "repair" on the rear qtr by some previous owner. Looks quite a bit better now!
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...408_143349.jpg http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...413_114322.jpg

We had to cut the tunnel to get both the T-56 and some special reinforcements in place underneath so new tunnel is being fabbed:

Primer & block sanding again and again. Glad its not my garage...
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...417_200838.jpg

CptKlutz 04-17-2009 12:20 PM

Meanwhile I'm busy on the carbon parts. Here the hood scoop being molded as a positive layup instead of a mold. I was trying to save time and this is the first time I've done it with clear carbon and no gelcoat. Jeez, the hours spent on clearcoating and sanding that thing! The front spoiler and splitter are a bit more rough finished thank god.

Wax on, wax off. Getting the original ready and slick:

2 layers of black glass:

One layer carbon:

Rough part ready for a zillion layers of PU clear filler and sanding:

Filled and sanded, ready for PU clear coat finish:

Inside getting some stiffening with Airex foam core and carbon over it:

FINALLY done!

CptKlutz 05-08-2009 09:27 AM

Car is back from SoCal Paintworks in primer and now its the finishing stretch. Should be some serious updates to look at over the next weeks!

Here some of the hard work they put into it:

Ready for serious finishing. The emblem is going to look cool.

tjbruning 05-08-2009 09:56 AM

Sweet build - love the center dump exhaust tips

CptKlutz 05-13-2009 12:30 AM

Thanks! Now if I could only free up time to get the rear diffusor done in time too...

We made a grille from a sheet from customcargrilles.com, pattern is called XXL Hexagon and we're going to powdercoat it black. I made a 2D drawing to work from if anyone needs it, but basically you bend over the original plastic piece.

http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...507_203046.jpg
(and yes, the first try came out too narrow courtesy of USPS)

I was worried about heat soak under the hood and also wanted to reduce front lift even more, so Dustin at CPR and Bob from SoCal Paintworks made some inverted louvers in the hood. A real pain as its all double layer under there and any heat makes it warp. Cant press directly into the hood but needed to weld in a separate piece. Came out great after some bending back in shape!

http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...505_105435.jpg http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...505_105534.jpg http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...506_083713.jpg

WhitecatD 05-13-2009 11:21 AM

Nice work!

Did you TIG weld those louvers on? What filler rod did you use?

CptKlutz 05-14-2009 07:13 AM

Yeah, Dustin tigged it with a silicate bronze rod. Lower melting point than normal trying to warp it as little as possible. They may try to MIG the rest because tig puts a lot of heat in the metal by nature.

Have you tried a pulse instead of constant current? I feel the sheet metal I've done warps less when I'm using the tig on a low current pulse setting. and you end up with less grinding too.

CptKlutz 07-23-2009 01:00 AM

So, here the latest update on the build. Holidays and other stuff has been in the way but its finally getting color. Finished the hood louvres - what a warping pain! Russell, I don't know how they welded it in the end but there was a good deal of warp to say the least. Got Bob from SoCal Paint to fix it, he knows the tricks.
Also the grille is finished and ready for powdercoat:

http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...520_043412.jpg http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...520_043502.jpg

I/C and tubing finished:

http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...527_210411.jpg http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...527_210438.jpg

Also got a little crazy on a last minute detail, a window net. Don't give me a hard time on that, I've just always wanted one since I got to drive a real NASCAR. It's bolted in in the pic, but yes there will be a quick release of course.

http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...707_072817.jpg http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...707_072827.jpg

http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...707_072837.jpg http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...708_001644.jpg

Color is 2008 Lotus Exige British Racing Green, a really old school BRG without any metallic at all. Really fits the Mustang IMHO. This is shot b4 the clearcoat. It will get a 1/4" white pinstripe as separation between the green & black, inspired by the George Folmer Trans Am car.

Just wondering

WOW, that one's coming along and looks killer I love the turbo piping.:hail:

You might play with the White Balance on your camera It kinda looks turquoise and dark blue lol.

-Russell

CptKlutz 07-24-2009 12:53 PM

Thanks!
The car is outside SoCal Paintworks, they always seem to have 1-2 VW's going on.
The British Racing Green has a lot of blue in it but you should play with your monitor settings I think! :unibrow: ;)

65 347 07-24-2009 04:33 PM

Those colors look cool together. Is the hood painted yet?

CptKlutz 08-03-2009 02:11 AM

No, unfortunately not. Cant wait to see the louvres in black!

CptKlutz 08-03-2009 01:49 PM

Here a little add on to the front spoiler, just mocked up real quick on my other 69. The GT2 will have special mounts for it so it can be removed when I want to look more "historically correct" I made it from an 8mm Airex foam core and 3 layers of CF. Not too pretty as its a wear part on the track anyway.

cowboybob 08-04-2009 05:59 AM

I like it...simple, yet it adds a custom touch to an otherwise common chin spoiler.

mrr1999 08-04-2009 12:37 PM

Car looks great! When I finally get to building my 69 Mach I, I'm going to have to get some build opinions from you.

CptKlutz 08-20-2009 12:43 PM

Definitely getting somewhere now! I've been itching to drive it for a year now but now were in reach of something. Trying to get at all together and dialed in for SEMA but still missing a sponsor to get us into the OPTIMA Challenge. HINT HINT BBK! :unibrow:

RAAMmat BXT for noise and some trick heat insulation here and there. Trying not to get carried away weight-wise:

Looking forward to seeing the end result.

Any updates one this nice project?

tyoneal 09-12-2009 01:25 AM

Hi:

Great Build, I've really been enjoying reading about it.

A question?

Assuming that this will be driven on the Street, Where will the Rear License Plate go?

Keep us the good work!

Thanks,

Ty

My guess would be in the license plate recess in the rear valance, but that
's just me.... :unibrow: unless it's on of those crazy 2' long euro plates...

CptKlutz 09-20-2009 03:19 AM

Sorry been away in Turkey for a bit. I'll post updates ASAP.
Yes the license plate is one of those 2' long ones. ;) It probably ends up tucked up under the bumper to one side. Haven't decided.

CptKlutz 10-22-2009 11:46 PM

OK, I know this is long overdue so here finally a few updates.

Engine dropped in, looks tiny all by itself down there but just wait until it meets all the turbo piping... :D Also the breather can is in. Right now it's moved "outside" for a cleaner look and easy access but might move back in, let's see.
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...902_042506.jpg http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...913_052538.jpg http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...913_052559.jpg

A little later room is getting more sparse!

Dustin is not really enjoying exhaust routing. I want it tight and unobtrusive with as much ground clearance as possible. :whistling:

What's not to like about the weld quality? BOV flange.
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...910_072236.jpg

One day the shop next door from CPR had a ride in with the same paint scheme as the GT2!

This build is killer. My favorite year mustang, love the stance, love the BRG, and those renderings look amazing. Can't wait to see it rolling, keep up the good work!!

groovyjay 11-10-2009 06:22 PM

Amazing work so far!

CptKlutz 01-28-2010 12:32 PM

Just came back from CA, brought over the CF spoilers and helped a bit on wiring the beast. The project has been on a bit of hold awaiting all the interesting changes the EU has made to import customs and VAT on classic cars. For a while it has been uncertain whether I'd be able to bring it in (more than $20k added in taxes) but there is hope at the end of the tunnel it seems.
And before anyone comments: that is NOT the right steering wheel! Missing an adaptor ring for the quick release that will take a Grant woody or a suede Momo.

No news in a while.

In short the recent changes to our EU import taxation, inspection and registration of classic and modified cars, means that the GT2 has now become to expensive (for me) to import and register in Denmark. So here it comes... :(

Ultimate pro-touring Mustang FOR SALE

The project stands as shown in the latest progress update. It basically just needs finishing of the electricals (at ~90%), assembly of interior, doors, rubber & glass, body panels, some exhaust and then dial-in. All the nice, custom and expensive stuff is there and waiting, so you are looking at minor parts + labor. CPR Streetmachines have done the build and will want to finish it. They are one of the best shops I have ever worked with and are knowing, always true to promises and fair in pricing.
This is not a budget build, so be realistic in price expectations. Trades considered (Mustang). PM me if you a serious and want to discuss.

WSSix 04-16-2010 09:20 AM

I'm really sorry to hear this. Best of luck in selling the car. This car is one of my favorite builds. Loved everything about it.
