I got the cluster fabrication finished and its ready for build primer.

We got the sub frame connectors welded in and shot with under body coating. They are 1 1/2" x 3" and 42 3/4" Long.
Now I have a place to run and mount the fuel lines.
I kept having to put the spray can down because its kind of fun undercoating. Just kept reminding myself it should be getting bead blasted next winter.

Also made a little whole in the trunk. Going to weld in a plate and then mount the fuel cell underneath the car so I retain the capacity of putting 3 bodies in the trunk. :2thumbs:

Trying to find someone in the area that can bead roll my metal for the trunk.

Well I haven't be able to work to much on the car because I've been tasked with assistance in putting the body panels back on a 31 Chevy.

http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...s/_MG_4711.jpg

http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...s/_MG_4820.jpg

I did get the fuel cell and welded the hole shut in the trunk floor in preparation for mounting the tank.

Needless to say it was a good experience in filling large gaps and welding from thick to thin metal.
When the frame off resto happens I will replace the whole panel with a flat sheet of metal.

Also swapped the steering wheel over and test fitted it to make sure the steering wheel adapter worked and didn't set the wheel out to far.

everythings looking great, keep up the good work!

-Freak- 04-10-2009 04:42 PM

Most of the fuel system is in and the rest of the hot side piping is on its way here.

Here is what my fuel system consists of.
Its amazing how fast little $8 parts add up.

Keep up the good work Freak!

-Freak- 04-22-2009 05:54 AM

We finished the piping and mounted the turbo last night. :durka:

Going to have the X02 50mm gate come off the pip just below the flange and then route it right back up into the 3 inch down pipe.

After getting it mounted the turbo looks extremely small...
But all the calculations say it should work just fine. The only issue i can potentially see is having to upgrade the exhaust housing from a .68 to a .96 so it doesn't build boost until later in the rpms so I can do 70mph down the freeway without being in boost.

Time will tell, now on with the pics.

I would be easier to answer what I don't have left to do.

Need to install the gauges, mega shifter, temporary bucket seats, finish running the fuel system, oil lines to and from the turbo, vaccuum lines to BOV and gate, build the blow through carb, make the cold side piping, clean up fix and install the steering colum, install a 6AL-BTM, wire up everything and then tune. :willy:

I'm sure I missed a few things in that list.

Once thats all done and the bugs are worked out then its time to rip it all apart for the bodywork and paint phase.

joe440 04-25-2009 01:22 PM

sick!

snowskater6996 04-25-2009 06:28 PM

what headers are you using?

-Freak- 04-26-2009 09:34 AM

They are shorty headers for a Dodge Dakota. A couple of the pipes had to be moved in order for them to fit.

Killer project. Glad you posted it. :)

-Freak- 05-09-2009 07:55 PM

Few updates.

Bought a 360 out of a 1991 ramcharger. Should make for a nice 42 cubic inch upgrade with a roller valve train!
http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...t/IMG_0346.jpg

95% of the fuel system has been run.
A new Holley HP main body is on its way along with the rest of the stuff to convert my carb for blow through.

Mounted the FPR, the angle iron is kind of fugly but it does the job.
-10AN lines are a big PITA to route.

70rs 05-09-2009 08:23 PM

Cool project! That car is going to be a ton of fun with that turbo on there.
Any idea what the HP will be at with the turbo? How much boost? I hope you can get some video of it on the road for us to enjoy!

-Freak- 05-13-2009 08:47 PM

I'm pretty sure the HP will be low on this 318. Smog heads and 150k on it. Going to give it as much boost as it will take.
When I build the 360 i'm hoping for 500hp or more.

More parts today. Time to start building the carb.

http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...t/IMG_0248.jpg

I couldn't leave well enough alone. So I took the dremel out and used some polish to clean it up a bit.

-Freak- 06-13-2009 10:08 PM

Figured it was time for an update.

Hot side is done for the most part. Just have to run the exhaust under the car now.

Moved the alternator, installed the Edelbrock intake, tranny cooler, finished the oil feed and return on the turbo and a friend got the rest of the pipes welded up and the waste gate mounted.

http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...deComplete.jpg

More pics to come, I need some sleep first.

tones2SS 06-14-2009 09:59 AM

She's getting there. She should be able to really move when done.
About how many horses would you say at the wheels when it's all said and done?

-Freak- 06-14-2009 03:31 PM

I really don't have a clue what it will put down with this bone stock 318 smog motor. I'm hoping 300hp or more at 10psi.

I'm more concerned with getting it all installed, leak free and running good. Then put the stock 1991 360 in it and hopefully put down 400hp+.

After the body work is done I will build the 360 for boost.

Here are the crazy custom merge pipe and down pipe.

http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...t/DownPipe.jpg

http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...nNightmare.jpg

Will be removing all the piping, cleaning it up inside and out then painting it with VHT Flame Proof. Good for Temperature: 1300°F-2000°F.
http://www.vhtpaint.com/flameproof.html

Still have to buy a carb hat and the cold side piping.

tones2SS 06-14-2009 07:35 PM

Very cool.
Not to get off topic but, what type of camera are you using? Those pics look great. Nice detail.
Keep us posted.

Canon XTI.

Thanks.

-Freak- 07-09-2009 07:14 PM

We got a few more things done. I'm pretty freakin lucky to have a buddy that's so damn good at fabricating with minimal tools.

Throttle kickdown bracket.
http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...tlebracket.jpg

Flange brace
http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...rt/bracket.jpg

New aluminum radiator and shroud.
Radiator is 19 x 22. 16" Electric fan moves 2200cfm.
The shroud was for a 19 x 26 radiator that had to be reworked to fit this one.
http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...ewRadiator.jpg

B&M has been installed and the manual steering column and steering sector are in. Also put in a temporary bucket seat until I get the dough for the ones I want.
http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...t/Interior.jpg

Had to cut a speed hol for the carb hat to clear.
6 pack hood scoop will be getting installed.
http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t.../Frontshot.jpg

Still have to finish the cold side and a lot of other things but the list is getting smaller fast.

Looking good Freak.

wedged 07-10-2009 12:00 PM

FYI, that VHT seems to be hit or miss on how it holds up. I've had some hold up very well and other spots not last at all.

GM Muscle 07-10-2009 12:21 PM

mine did not last. even with following the instruction to the t!

-Freak- 07-10-2009 01:48 PM

I guess time will tell, thanks for the info.
Couple guys on turbomustangs have had good luck with it.
Hopefully it will last the year or so that i need it.

X2!

Any progress over the weekend?

-Freak- 07-13-2009 10:12 AM

We rigged up a temporary pump relay to prime the fuel system and adjust the fuel pressure regulator.
Found a bad AN fitting that caused a very slow leak. Will be ordering a new one today.

The pump is definitely audibly noticeable, but holy crap does it move fuel!

Finished a few other small items.

Its a good thing we made a list. It actually feels like something is being accomplished when you can cross items off.

start planning now for the fuel pump to fail : fuel pump problem

I've read a couple posts of A1000's issues, but a lot more with people saying they run them and haven't reported any issues.
Who knows what the actual failure rate on them is. If it was high enough to be a concern I don't think they would be as widely used.

Time will tell, If it goes out I will probably switch to the Magnafuel I was originally looking at.

-Freak- 07-20-2009 07:54 PM

ITS ALIVE!!

lots of things had to happen in the past week to get it going by today since my buddy goes under the knife tomorrow to fix a torn ligament in his arm.

We need to get the timing figured out and the carb rejetted.
Right now we have vent tube extensions in and are running 68/76 jets.

Have to ease into the throttle or it loads up. The 318 isn't so happy with the 750 cfm carb until it gets up in the rpm's.

Here is my buddy taking it for a drive.
http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...aTurboDart.jpg

Its pretty freakin cool when the boost builds and it starts to haul ass.

The work continues.
At least I can now say that I probably have the only turbo'd Dodge Dart in Minnesota.

6D9 07-20-2009 11:01 PM

Congrats man! Sweet build...

SickSpeedMonte 07-21-2009 04:19 AM

Congrats!! Good luck sorting it out.

XcYZ 07-21-2009 06:00 AM

Awesome. What's the next step? Getting the tune dialed in? When does it start building boost?

-Freak- 07-21-2009 06:29 AM

Yep its all about tuning right now.

We just took it out to break in the turbo a little and do a systems check to make sure everything was working.

It was damn fun to drive. I can't wait until its tuned to see what it will actually do.

We were seeing 5-6lbs of boost, at what RPM i'm not sure. By the time it picked up and took off I was driving it through an S curve.

-Freak- 08-02-2009 09:51 AM

Took the car out to work on the tune a little more.
I have to learn how to drive with a large mechanical secondary on this 318.

Its quite fun to blow the tires off at 25mph.
Its also a riot to stab it in second and get INSTANT set me back seat of the pants pull.

Its hitting 5psi at ~3000rpm, which is full boost right now.

Saving for a MSD 6BTM so I can get this thing tuned in properly.
