I wouldn't worry about GM.
You could make a living building camaros or other cars.

tones2SS 05-16-2009 12:24 PM

Man, that looks so KILLER!!!:hail:

customcam 05-16-2009 08:06 PM

Mark thanks for the insight, very cool car as always

Kooks are known to make some really nice headers for the LSx engines.
Good quality with good performance. Thanks for all the answers Mark.
Good luck with all the GM stuff.

69

Mark can you hook us up with a update?

JohnnyGMachine 07-31-2009 07:14 AM

Mark, great looking project as usual. At first I used to say the same thing...man, Mark's building another '69? How about a second gen. Then after reading some of his responses and thinking about my thing with fox body Mustangs I understand. I've owned 7 fox body cars, hall hatchbacks and one notch. I still own the notchback and drive my 88 GT everyday. I think about going with something newer but theres' just something I like and enjoy about modifying that particular Mustang generation. I know those cars in and out. Maybe it's the same way for you Mark, you just like what ya like and what kind of results you can get from it when you're done making it even better. The 69 Camaro is such a clean modern design, it will always be classic and timeless.

Yep I like '69 and I have a ton of spare parts... lol I never wonder what size wrench to grap because I just know.

After getting JA shipped back to Charley I got a few things done on my car.

I'm going to try to build almost everything prior to paint. I've got the following done to the car:

Engine
Engine assy
Trans
Shifter and trim ring
Rad
A/C Cond
Vintage Air Condenser
A/C bulkhead
DSE Front Sub and DSE 4 link
Header
Exhaust
Fuel Tank
DSE Dash with AM gauges
Dry sump tank
Brembo Brakes
ABS module

Working on the following

Diff cooler
Trans cooler
Brake lines
Engine Harness
Body Harness
All the hoses
DSE rear sway bar
Aluminum front bumper

So once I get every thing made I will strip the car back down and send it to paint. Still I don't know who will paint it. I hate the paint process.

I should get my Fikse wheels next week. I will post a picture once it is on the ground.

Very cool Mark.
Cannot wait to see another one of your builds!!

Mark,

What sold you on putting ABS in it?

SLO 65 07-31-2009 01:52 PM

Brakes

Can you offer up a little information on the Brembo brakes. Are they the carbon ones from the ZR1, CTS-V, or aftermarket? Thanks.

Nick

itsals1 07-31-2009 02:02 PM

Maybe Scott can convince you to road trip over to Wisconsin and have Kurt and Paul at AutoKraft do the paint and body. the last 69' was over-the-top!! Just a thought.

Yea, sure, just toss that in and see if anyone notices...

Hammerformed? Concrete buck? Just the front?

I was wondering is anyone would notice that....

So far it looks like I can save 20 lbs right of the nose of the car with an aluminum bumper and braces. I bought the bumper off E-bay. It fits OK but the shape it dead on. I think some Chinese compainy just change the material from steel to aluminum. It is the same gauge as a repo steel one. I'm making a fake endura bumper out of it. Hope it works out.

I love ABS brakes!!! All of our GM track stuff has ABS brakes. This is a big science project. You can buy an off the shelf Bosch Motorsports system for about $10,000. I don't have $10K so I'm working on putting togther a system out of other OE stuff. The wheel speed sensors on the front are easy with the DSE clip. It has C-5 hubs with built in wheel speed sensors. I had Currier build me a Ford 9 inch with Mustang wheel speed sensors built into the rear axles. So after digging around I found out the Ford rear wheel speed sendor are a Bosch. So I hope the sensor output will work with my module. We have bench tested them and I think so. I had special tone wheel made to match the pulses per rev of a C-5 Vett to match the front wheel speed sensors. We are also working on making the ABS unit work as a stand alone. No stability or low mu performance (ice).

I was going to install ABS on JA but with the carbon brakes it is even harder to sort out. The carbon brakes double there output from ambiant to 400 degrees C. I'm OK with trying this on my car because I have had a lot of experience tuning ABS systems and having them fail at speed. Things happen very fast when you have lost your brake system on the track. I have had a number of "off track" experiences developing ABS and stabilty systems. If I can get this system to work it will be fun and I've learned a lot in the process. The system will need to be balanced in a "failed" mode when I first start sorting it out.

Mark

GregWeld 08-01-2009 07:36 AM

Mark -

Isn't there some "statement" about if you haven't gone off track - then you haven't been going fast enough??

LOL

Big difference there between going too fast - vs a total brake failure... The pucker factor has to be 10X's ?? It's one thing entering too fast and at least being able to TRY to slow a bit... And entering and have NO BRAKES... It's never happened to me (limited track time to Bondurant and Spring Mountain) - but I can only imagine that it's a real unpleasant experience!

So the carbon rotors take some heat to work "better"? Or is it that they work fine and then just get better with heat? Some pads (against normal rotors) take some heat to work - as I understand it - and can be a nightmare on the street...

I think the carbon rotors work fine right off the bat, but get even better as they get hotter, which requires a bit different braking during a track session. At least that was the excuse Charley used when he spun the car off the track during braking...................

So, Jody.... If Charley went off track in Jackass.. can we now say that Charley Jackedo** ? I'm shocked - really shocked!

clill 08-01-2009 08:14 AM

Funny guys...... The Carbon brakes work great when cold but as they heat up they get absolutely grippy. In the pics at the Gingerman event you can see white smoke coming off the front tires in one of the pics. Mark was smart enough to let off the brakes. At the same point on the track I hit the brakes to make the right hand turn in my warm up lap and locked them up. Stupid guy that I am I kept my foot on the brakes and slid all the way into the grass. It is hard to let your foot off the brakes at 100 mph when you need to make a hard right turn.

We noticed, but at this point our 'Steilow= trick 1st gen Camaro' tolerance threshold has gotten real high ...

GregWeld 08-01-2009 08:22 AM

Sorry Charley! I just couldn't help myself... It's the Starbucks!

While I was doing the Spring Mountain Motorsports track - we repeatedly asked if we couldn't do laps WITHOUT the Corvettes traction control on.. the PROS told us - you won't be able to stay on the track without it... YEAH RIGHT we replied - "WE" know how to drive these buggers...

They relented and let us run sans TC -- and timed us (of course) and we were all WAY slower... no spins... but the cars (ZO6's) became a handful... tails hanging out and wallowing etc. and while it was fun - it became a lot of work! A couple of laps and we all then had to beg to be allowed to use the TC again. LOL

I'm sorry to do this, but I have to bring up the second gens again. I would love to see you do your magick on one of those. But then again I am a little biased.:D

A little update:

I had added a few more items to the car and had Stenod do some work on the car.

Finished the exhaust, fuel lines and diff coolers line.

You don't need to be told - as usual - it's way over the top kool!

Love the lines! Nothing prettier than some nice stainless steel lines that are routed properly!

Mark, what's the rod running at an angle just in front of the stock fuel tank location? A panhard bracket stiffener?

Mark, we've read on Lat-g how great 'X' rides and handles.

Any changes you're going to make to this car as far as the suspension tuning goes?

looks great Mark. Some day we're gonna have a talk about those red and blue hose ends....................:P

Well I had the a few red and blue "in stock" at home so I used them. All the new one under hood are black. Maybe Santa will bring me some new black ones.

GregWeld 09-14-2009 06:55 PM

I dip those pesky red or blue anodized fittings in DRANO CYRSTALS and WATER mixed up in a plastic bucket - only takes a very small amount to do one or two at a time... but you can only use CRYSTAL drano... it's sold in a small black can with a red plastic lid. About $3 for a can of it.

Dunk that fitting in there hanging off a piece of welding rod - swish it around and rinse it off in fresh water - and polish it right up.

If you make the solution too strong - it will fizz and boil and you better be quick on your dip! Also DO NOT PUT THIS CLOSE TO YOUR FACE either - the fumes are more than nasty! Make it too weak and it takes forever... after a couple of batches you'll get the hang of it.

EEEEEEEEHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAA

Yes I added a panhard rod stiffiner and tow hooks on the axle while I had the welder out.

OK I'll buy some more black ones. AN fittings are more expensive than a meth habit. A bag always cost me $100. Then I have to go back in a few days and buy more........ :_paranoid
