Buyers pay right away, auction makes a little more $ on 4 weeks of float. They want to make sure the buyer's funds clear, but IMO if I am selling at their auction, the buyer's funds shouldn't be my problem. That is a risk that the auction company assumes in return for their fee revenue.

Of course day of sale seller pay is customary in the wholesale auto auction business where I work.

Mecum pays the day of sale.

Hey guys! Unreal week!!!

I just got back today, and it's been real hard to read the posts on my iPhone, let alone post. Cell coverage in Las Vegas sucks.

Anyway, many many many thanks for the support and well-wishes. As Steve said, I'm not sure how to behave right now. The car was well received and the bidders looking at it built steadily during the day on Friday. I spent several hours taking several bidders through the design and intended function of the car.

And as I've said elsewhere:

[the B-J auction price point of] II Much has to be considered an outlier, one of those rare events that defy explanation, and an event that shouldn't be used to make any future decisions or predictions. Several people with the resources to buy it really liked the car and they duked it out at the auction. I don't think there's any more to it than that.

Thanks again guys!!!!!

Well put... I was there Friday and you are right. Prices were low to decent all day Friday, then evening came, and prices got stupid- no rime or reason. I saw a very dated 69 prostreet Camaro painted purple with a funky white interior fetch 80K! and on it goes. Like I've heard elsewhere...it takes two people who want the same car! contrats John:thumbsup:

so does that mean that everyone with a decent protouring 69 Camaro can break 100k? Man I wish it were true...but ...back to reality

I was showing the pics of your cars fabrication today to a friend. You literally built pretty much everything you could yourself instead of just buying a bunch of parts off the shelf. The fact that it worked great when you were done, and the level of fabrication and assembly was so high, that's why the car brought what it did. I'm just an assembler in comparison, which is fine. I know my limits and stay within them. You did a fantastic job on that build, can't wait for the next one. And I was very happy for you watching the auction.

So happy for you John!!

Great post!

I'm glad to see all of us "discussing" these auction sales... some folks get it - and some just don't... which is neither here nor there. BUT I'm happy to see that you understand how lucky you got (although I think people make their own luck)....

But what separates a home run sale from a ho hum sale?? 2 or more people that WANT WHAT YOU HAVE.... and are willing, and able, to pay for it. If you don't have what people want - you have a ho hummer... END OF STORY.

I have always been paid day of sale by them too, but the last two times they have wanted to wait until the buyer paid for it first. I usually just have to get Dana to ok it. You think they might trust me a little more seeing that my dad and his wife work for them. :_paranoid

Van B 10-12-2009 07:10 PM

Anyway, congrats on the sale John. It couldn't happen to a better guy. Now I guess I'll have to set my sights on a certain blue Camaro if those bags of cash suddenly fall out of the sky.

parsonsj 10-13-2009 05:23 AM

Maybe we'll see Camaro X in Scottsdale!

Kudo's to you John,

You build an outstanding car. Thus the reason you had such a great showing.

I can't wait to see your next project.

You car has and will always be inspirational to all of us.
